WISCONSIN RAPIDS – On the 50th anniversary of its Class C WISAA State Championship, members of Assumption Boys Cross Country team gave words of inspiration to the current Boys and Girls teams before going to Rib Lake for the Marawood Conference Meet that was held on Thursday, October 17.
The Assumption girls won the team title with a score of as junior, Lucy Dolan was the top finisher in 19-minutes, 26.80- seconds.
The Assumption alumnus told them about how the sport was ran when they were competing, and words of motivation from experience and scripture to help them on their quest for a title.
Assumption has qualified for state in the Girls Division the last five years, and placed fourth in 2023, as they returned nearly its entire roster from a year ago.
The Royals were Runner-Up at the WIAA Division 3 Sectional race that was held in Westfield on Saturday, Oct. 26 and will now be competing in the WIAA Division 3 State Championship race on Saturday, Nov. 2 at the Ridges Golf Course with the Girls’ race beginning at Noon.
Freshman, Reed Hartjes, also qualified for state and is the first Boy to make it since 2019 and will run at 2:00 p.m..
Both the Nekoosa and Port Edwards Football teams were knocked out of title contention in their Level 1 playoff games on Friday, Oct. 25.
The Papermakers were beaten by Abbotsford 42-28 in Division 6, while Port took on top-seeded Owen-Withee and were handed a 60-6 defeat in 8-player football.
After winnings its first conference title in 23 years, the Nekoosa Volleyball team earned the No. 1 seed in its playoff bracket and showed why as they earned a regional title for the first time since 1998 when they beat Poynette 3-1 with scores of (25-23, 17-25, 25-18, 25-20.)
