MILWAUKEE, Wis (WAUK) – Milwaukee police reported a significant decline in major crime during the third quarter of 2024, continuing a positive trend seen earlier in the year. According to statistics released this week, homicides decreased by 22% and non-fatal shootings dropped by 23% compared to the same period last year.

Overall,  major crimes, defined as Part I by the FBI, fell by 4% from 19,994 in 2023 to 19,172 in 20244. These crimes include homicide, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, and vehicle theft.

Mayor Cavalier Johnson was satisfied with the progress but emphasized the need for continued efforts. “Improving safety is too important, it’s too high a priority for us to ease up,” Johnson said.

The report also highlighted areas of concern. Carjackings increased by 17%, while robberies and auto thefts rose by 3% and 4% respectively. Police Chief Jeffrey Norman acknowledged the movement, saying, “I do not like to see trends like this. While we know summer is hot both in weather and crime trends, we do not take this lightly”.

Even with the improvements, officials note that crime levels remain higher than pre-pandemic rates.
