RACINE, Wis. (WRJN) — The City of Racine is launching a new initiative to combat basement flooding and protect its sewer system. Starting September 3, homeowners can apply for grants of up to $5,000 to install sump pumps, with 100 grants available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Mayor Cory Mason emphasized the dual benefits of the program, stating, “We’re helping people protect their homes while also protecting the environment.”

The sump pumps will replace older foundation drains that currently direct stormwater into sanitary sewers. This change aims to reduce the flow of rainwater into the sewer system during storms, preventing basement backups and minimizing the risk of releasing partially treated water into Lake Michigan.

Part of a broader effort by Racine’s Wastewater Utility, the initiative sets a goal of installing 2,000 sump pumps citywide by the end of 2031. This marks the second year of the grant program.

Eligible homes must have existing foundation drains connected to city sewers and be free of major code violations or unpaid taxes. After city approval, homeowners will select licensed contractors for installation, with the city covering costs up to $5,000 following inspection.

Applications will be available online and at Racine City Hall.
