Nicolae Miu, the man convicted earlier this year for fatally stabbing a teenager on the Apple River in 2022, has been sentenced to prison.

Miu appeared in a packed courtroom on Wednesday for the sentencing. Before the ruling was handed down, a number of family and friends of those involved in the attack gave statements to the court. According to a WEAU report, 17 year old Isaac Schuman’s mother called him a monster in her statement.

He was sentenced to serve a total of 20 years in prison and six years of extended supervision.

Earlier this year, Miu was found guilty by a St. Croix County jury of first-degree reckless homicide after an eight day trial. The charges were a step down from the original first-degree intentional homicide charges. In addition to the reckless homicide conviction, Miu was also convicted on four counts of first-degree recklessly endangering safety.

The 56-year old Prior Lake man was arrested in 2022 after the confrontation on the Apple River. One of the five people involved was the 17 year old Schuman, who died from the injuries he sustained.

In his arguments, Miu’s attorney claimed that he was acting in self-defense and that he was approached while looking for a friend’s phone in the water. St. Croix County District Attorney Karl Anderson closed with a video of the incident, which showed Nicolae Miu running towards the last victim even when he had a chance to walk away and de-escalate the situation. He also argued the video showed that Schuman had not been involved in the altercation until he tried to help the victims who had already been stabbed.
