Congressman Derrick Van Orden released a letter on Monday calling for the removal of President Joe Biden under the 25th Amendment.

The letter comes amid a seismic shift in the political landscape, as President Biden announced over the weekend that he will no longer seek re-election in November. Following the announcement, many Democratic officials expressed their support for Vice President Kamala Harris as the presumptive nominee.

In the letter addressed to Vice President Harris, Congressman Van Orden says “I write to you with a profound sense of urgency regarding the President of the United States’ inability to perform his constitutional duties as Chief Executive and Commander in Chief. As the leader of the free world, it is paramount that the President is of both sound mind and body. It is readily apparent that President Biden is neither.”

Congressman Van Orden has also been active on social media this week, speculating that he would be very surprised if President Biden makes it through the remainder of his term.

In their response to the news of President Biden’s withdrawal, all three Democratic challengers to Congressman Van Orden expressed gratitude for the President’s decades of service. Katrina Shankland, Rebecca Cooke, and Eric Wilson praised President Biden for his years of public service and expressed excitement for the future of the party under a new generation of leadership. The August 13 primary will determine which of the three will face Congressman Van Orden in November’s general election.

Other prominent members of the Democratic Party of Wisconsin, including Governor Tony Evers and United States Senator Tammy Baldwin have endorsed Vice President Harris as the new nominee.
