MILWAUKEE, Wis (Civic Media) — Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson praised the city’s hosting of the Republican National Convention, declaring it a showcase of the city’s capacity to host major events.

During a press conference Thursday morning, Johnson emphasized the economic benefits of hosting such large-scale gatherings. “I want more big conventions, more big sporting events, more entertainment events and other large meetings,” he said. “You know why? Because it translates into jobs and opportunities for Milwaukee residents and growth for businesses here in the city.”

The mayor reported minimal disruptions during the convention. Seven arrests were made in two incidents near the convention area, with an additional arrest for alleged ticket theft.

Johnson noted that demonstration areas saw increased activity but remained orderly.

The press conference wasn’t free from politics. Johnson noted his political differences with the Republican nominee and highlighted his percieved contrast with the Biden administration’s policies. There was no comment about the current political climate in Washington D.C and at the White House

Johnson finished by expressing optimism about Milwaukee’s future as a destination for major events. “The RNC is not the end, it’s the beginning,” he said, noting increased inquiries about hosting conventions in the city since the RNC announcement.

The mayor credited local law enforcement and federal agencies for the smooth operation of the event, emphasizing the high level of security provided for the national special security event.

The RNC wraps up today. Follow along with continuing coverage here.
