MILWAUKEE, Wis (Civic Media) – Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson revealed Wednesday that he spoke with former President Donald Trump on Tuesday afternoon during the ongoing Republican National Convention.

In his daily morning briefing on the third day of the RNC, Johnson said Trump expressed positive sentiments about his experience in Milwaukee and gratitude for the security and law enforcement preparations.

“I appreciated the call from Mr. Trump and again wished him a speedy recovery from his recent injuries,” Johnson stated, referring to the assassination attempt on Trump last Saturday.

The mayor also addressed Tuesday’s fatal shooting near 14th and Vliet streets involving police officers from Columbus, Ohio. The victim, identified as 43-year-old Samuel Sharpe Jr., was reportedly wielding knives during an altercation with an unarmed person when several officers shot their firearms, killing him.

Johnson emphasized the tragedy of the situation, expressing sympathy for Sharpe’s family and friends while also acknowledging the difficult position of the out-of-state officers.

Despite this incident, the mayor reported that the overnight period in Milwaukee was “uneventful,” with no arrests made related to the convention.

The 2024 Republican National Convention, which officially opened on Monday, has seen Trump make his first public appearance at Fiserv Forum since the attempt on his life.  You can follow along with Civic Media coverage here
