Madison committee approves next steps for future state history museum

MADISON, Wis. (WMDX) – The Madison Plan Commission approved the demolition of three buildings on the capitol square last night, clearing the way for the construction of a new Wisconsin Historical Center.

The three buildings at 20, 22, and 30 North Carroll Street contain the old Wisconsin Historical Museum, and two neighboring office buildings. While the two office buildings were both built in the early 1900s, the city’s Landmarks Commission found that they had no historical, architectural, or cultural significance. 

Not everyone was on board with the decision to demolish the buildings. Daniel Douglas is the great-grandson of one of the builders of the original buildings at 20 and 22 North Carroll Street. He says that these are the last two buildings on the square that were built by his great-grandfather, and that they should be preserved.

But Alder Mike Verveer, who represents the area around the future historical center, says that while he will be sad to see the buildings go, he is more excited to see the new proposed historical center.

After nearly an hour of discussion, the Plan Commission unanimously approved the demolition and other permits to allow the construction of the new Historical Center. It will now be voted on by the Common Council later this year.

The new Wisconsin Historical Center is slated to open in 2026.
