Show No. 200 (Hour 1)

September 25, 2023

Show No. 200

We’re marking our 200th early morning show—for no other reason than someone should get a little credit for not missing a 4am alarm for 200 shows in a row! As always, we’ll unpack the weekend headlines and visit with Dr. Kristin Lyerly.

Staying on Offense to Defend Democracy (Hour 2)

September 18, 2023

We’ll visit with Scot Ross about the need for progressives to rise to the challenge of calling out misinformation and insisting on better coverage that doesn’t let assaults on democracy sound like “business as usual.”

The Lives We Could Save (Hour 2)

September 11, 2023

Wisconsin lawmakers are about to begin their fall session with so much potential—including the ability to pass gun safety legislation that could save the lives of children, law enforcement officers, and more. We’ll talk to a pediatric critical care physician, the kind of doctors who see far too many children whose lives have been lost because of legislative gridlock.

All You Need Is Love (Hour 1)

September 11, 2023

Whatever history writes of the Jordan Love Era, at least it will have started with a win against the Chicago Bears. We’ll also recap disappointing results from the Badgers and Brewers—10-plus innings of no-hit baseball and they still lose? Plus a review of Wisconsin news headlines to start the week.

The Blessings of Difficult Journeys (Hour 2)

September 7, 2023

We never know when something will happen that upends our lives, but sometimes that burden turns out to be a blessing. We’ll talk to a cultural anthropologist at UW-Stout about how his daughter’s disabilities are helping him remind all of us of the value of every person—and the benefits that come with being more inclusive.

The Impeachment Hail Mary (Hour 1)

September 7, 2023

For a party that has tried nullifying past election results, even this move would be drastic—trying to impeach a newly-elected state Supreme Court justice. We’ll talk to Joe Zepecki about whether Republicans are bluffing in their threat to try to undo the will of the voters who overwhelmingly elected Janet Protasiewicz less than six months ago. Also, Tara Johnson enters the race for Congress in the 3rd District.

Waukesha Schools in Crisis (Hour 2)

August 28, 2023

Our “Motherhood Monday” segment looks at what can happen when a quality school district becomes infected with politics. Some things are eye-catching—like rejecting free school lunches for kids. Some things are odd—like banning a song about rainbows. But the more troubling “canaries in the coal mine” take the form of teachers leaving the district because education is being replaced with right-wing indoctrination. We’ll talk to one of them.

Teach (and Feed) Your Children Well (Hour 2)

August 21, 2023

It’s hard to believe we still live in an era where grown adults are comfortable with the notion that some kids go hungry while they’re at school. We’ll talk to Rep. Kristina Shelton about her school meals initiatives. She also joins Kate and Nicole from Motherhood for Good to talk about the recent Summer Summit by the Wisconsin Public Education Network.

They Crash What Now? (Hour 2)

August 14, 2023

Everyone’s familiar with the idea of a demolition derby—but for farm machinery? Salina Heller talks about an annual tradition at her hometown county fair: the combine demolition derby! Plus Terry Bell with 3 Things to Know to start the week.

Border Battle Part Two: WI vs. MN (Hour 2)

July 20, 2023

On Wednesday, we featured reporters from Iowa and Michigan outlining significant differences in what their legislatures focused on this spring. In this week’s Hometown Health, Dr. Kristin Lyerly and a fellow obstetrician-gynecologist from Minnesota look at the significant differences between what Republicans refused to do in Madison and everything Democrats accomplished in St. Paul on behalf of families, safety, and public health.
