Look Who’s Still Protecting PFAS Polluters (Hour 1)

February 5, 2025

It’s been almost 600 days since more state-funded work could’ve been started on removing industrial chemicals called PFAS from Wisconsin groundwater, but Republicans are still blocking the money. Gov. Tony Evers is trying to set up new rules. Will GOP lawmakers choose to protect families or corporate polluters? Also: In this week’s Climate Check: New polling indicates the vast majority of Americans want to see action on reducing air pollution and growing the availability of cleaner energy sources. How much longer will Republican voters put up with their elected officials being so out of touch and addicted to oil and coal?

What to Learn From Trump’s Chaos (1st Hour)

January 29, 2025

A growing number of Americans are understanding that the chaos frequently caused by President Trump is intentional—and that it’s important to keep a clear head and seek a path back to stability. We’ll talk to political strategist Melissa Baldauff about the panic caused by Trump’s announced intention to freeze all federal grants and loans—from Meals on Wheels to health research to housing assistance—and redirecting depression or cynicism into advocacy and personal choice.

We’ll Always Have Paris (Hour 1)

January 22, 2025

This week’s Climate Check reviews the significance of President Trump taking us out of the Paris Accords to help stop doing damage to the climate—and maybe there’s a reason why it won’t sting so badly the second time around. Also: There’s a theme centered on pride rather than pity when it comes to dealing with another round of Trump. We’ll hear from folks who attended an event designed to lift the voices of people who face being attacked and marginalized over the next four years.

Using Eau Claire as a Dumping Ground (Hour 1)

January 15, 2025

Some law enforcement agencies in western Wisconsin have acknowledged using Eau Claire as a dumping ground—picking up homeless or mentally ill people who have not committed a crime, taxiing them to Eau Claire, and dumping them on the streets against their will. This isn’t a surprise given the example put on by some politicians in Texas and Florida whose actions amount to human trafficking, but law enforcement shouldn’t sink to their level. And in this week’s Climate Check: a final round of grants for rural clean energy projects before President Biden leaves office—with no guarantee the Trump administration won’t leave rural America high and dry.

Really? The ‘Gulf of America’ (Hour 1)

January 8, 2025

As the world’s billionaires compete for the affections of Donald Trump, users of Facebook and Instagram will notice something different: more misinformation. Trump himself is again putting on a sideshow, with cracks about “acquiring” Greenland and Panama and changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico. It’s designed to divert attention from the lack of any real plans to benefit Americans. But President Biden got things done, as evidenced by this week’s opening of new EV charging stations around the state—something we’ll talk about in this week’s Climate Check.

Sunny Future for Wisconsin’s Grid (Hour 1)

December 18, 2024

Did you hear about the fake electors who met in the state Capitol on Tuesday? No, you didn’t, because nobody from the losing side of November’s election tried to undermine it; we’ll review what did happen, a quiet event when everybody plays by the rules. Also: This week’s Climate Check has details on a big new solar energy project planned for central Wisconsin and all the little solar energy projects going up on rooftops throughout a part of the Milwaukee metro.

Saving Lives vs Telling Lies (Hour 1)

December 11, 2024

This week’s conversation about the climate offers a reminder that President-elect Trump’s choice for Energy Secretary is a fracking oil CEO who thinks a changing climate is a good thing—without any evidence to back it up. Meanwhile, ordinary Americans are already making a difference with only a single home improvement: the proliferation of heat pumps is causing a measurable reduction in air pollution.

Budget Cuts for Thee, But Not for Me! (Hour 1)

December 4, 2024

Congressional Republicans have a dilemma on their hands. President Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act is creating a new generation of jobs nationwide, without regard to who supported him. A lot of “red states” are seeing big benefits. So when President-elect Trump talks about undoing Biden’s investments, these GOP lawmakers find themselves in a bit of a pickle.

More Breakups, Courtesy of MAGA (Hour 1)

November 27, 2024

We already know what a second Donald Trump term will be like for efforts to tackle a changing climate. Now we know more about the team he’s putting in place to slash federal support for clean energy, remove protections from sensitive lands and water, and pump more carbon into the air. We’ll have more in this week’s Climate Check. Meanwhile, the climate for relationships has become more hostile for some Wisconsin couples, according to a survey of breakups prompted by the election.

Hate Has a Home in the US Capitol (Hour 1)

November 20, 2024

As a Delaware legislator, Sarah McBride focused on real issues like paid family leave, child care access, and raising wages. Now, newly-elected to Congress, McBride is a convenient target for hate-centered Republicans who haven’t been able to pass any significant legislation but plan to take time out to vote on banning the first transgender member of Congress from using a bathroom. Also: In our weekly Climate Check, we’ll talk to an electrician about the wave of work in Wisconsin that’s come from President Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act—and future of the career, even with a climate denialist coming into the White House.
