Luke Mathers
When Women Lead (2nd Hour)
Kristin Lyerly will have our weekly segment, Women Win Wisconsin, highlighting Rep. Jodi Emerson (D-Eau Claire). We continue our interviews with candidates in the 3rd Congressional District, catching up with Rebecca Cooke. And Luke Mathers previews upcoming shows across the Civic Media radio network.
What Van Orden Doesn’t Want You To Know (Hour 1)
Derrick Van Orden is up to his old tricks. Over the weekend, he announced that he’s running for reelection as congressman of Wisconsin’s 3rd district. In his video, he’s wearing flannel, jeans, and a ball cap, playing the role of the good-natured rural Wisconsinite. However, there’s something that he wants you to forget about: Van Orden was at the Capitol during the January 6th insurrection. He says he backs the blue, but he still supports Trump, a man who stands firmly against the rule of law, referring to J6 insurrectionists as “hostages.”
Todd brings us legal documents on one of these January 6th rioters to provide an example of the kinds of people Trump would pardon.
Luke Mathers, Civic Media’s Executive Producer, returns for some more Tuesday Tangents! He weighs in on Derrick Van Orden’s hollow promises to “back the blue.” After taking your calls, Luke gives a quick overview of the new coach for the Milwaukee Bucks.

Why Women Are Running (2nd Hour)
Our new Women Win Wisconsin segment highlights a Marquette County resident who wants to make a difference in the Legislature. And we’ll ask Dr. Kristin Lyerly about a troubling trend in new proposals to ban abortion care—legal language that would force women to endure dangerous or unwanted procedures when a pregnancy goes horribly wrong.
Happy Quitters Day! (Hour 2)
Apparently, Americans are terrible at carrying out New Year’s resolutions. By the second Friday of the year, 80% of us have already given up on our goals for the new year. We take your calls on ways to stay determined to better yourself.
Luke also brings us some breaking news! Wisconsin Republicans have proposed a new bill that would ban abortion after 14 weeks of pregnancy. Clearly, they are not serious about governing for the people of wisconsin. The idea of an abortion ban is incredibly unpopular in our state, and Governor Evers has already promised to veto this bill when it comes across his desk.
Aaron’s board game of the week is Root! Choose one of four factions of woodland creatures and battle for dominance of the forest. This game is highly asymmetrical, meaning that each animal plays very differently, bringing a lot of replay value. This is the most complicated board game Aaron has brought to us, but if you have a group of 2-4 people who are ready to learn the rules, it’s a very rewarding experience. Several expansions are available to ratchet it up even further.

The Todd Non-Todd Allbaugh Show (Hour 1)
Todd isn’t around today, but we still have a fresh show for you! Luke Mathers is filling in for the Toddfather on a well-deserved day off. We kick off the day by returning to a discussion Todd started on Wednesday: how is our economy really doing? The Wall Street Journal today follows in the footsteps of Axios with an article on the average American’s financial situation. Things are looking up, but that doesn’t mean it’s time to sit back and celebrate. While approximately 60% of Americans are happy about where they’re with, we must do what we can to help out the other 40%. Aaron and Luke take your calls about economic growth, corporate greed, and political messaging.

A Weak Showing For Trump (Hour 1)
Last night, the Iowa caucus was held in Dubuque, with Donald Trump predictably winning at approximately 51% of the vote. Todd goes over the detailed results of the polls, showing that 82% of Iowans at the caucus believe the 2020 election was dishonest. If those individuals think Trump is the rightful president, why did they not vote for him? Luke Mathers has some thoughts, so he joins us to dissect the results on today’s edition of Tuesday Tangents. He and Todd also wrap up the hour with a discussion on Sunday’s incredible showing by the Packers and the perils of customer service.

The Glamorous Life of a Candidate
Political candidates used to carefully control their image through consultants, professional photographers, and so on. But in the social media age, we see much more “real life” from the people seeking our vote—including a mom who had to switch gears and shoot a video as wet heavy snow pummeled Wisconsin. We’ll learn more about Emily Tseffos, a state Assembly candidate in the Fox Valley.
Uphill Both Ways (Hour 1)
Winter storm advisories and warnings continue to develop across the state. Stay safe out there! If you must travel, you can use 511WI.gov to monitor road conditions on your route.
What’s the best way to spend a snow day? Many school districts around the state have one today, so we take your calls and texts on wintertime activities for kids and families. Luke Mathers joins in for an edition of Tuesday Tangents, sharing his own childhood snow day memories and comparing them to the experiences of students today. Today’s tangents also extend to sports, covering the struggles of the Milwaukee Bucks and the unexpected success of Jordan Love and the Green Bay Packers. Finally, Luke shares his frustrations with many Wisconsin drivers who refuse to take simple steps that ensure safety for all on the road.

Covid Booster Coasters and Immigration Reform (Hour 1)
At Perry High School in Iowa, America’s first school shooting of 2024 took place, killing one and injuring five. Our hearts are with the victims and their families, and we will continue to advocate for common sense gun laws in any way we can.
Luke Mathers helps us kick off the year with some Thursday Tangents! He and Todd take your calls on immigration reform once again. As complex as this issue is, there are potential solutions, but both Republicans and Democrats must work together. The Dignity Act is one such piece of bipartisan legislation, but Republicans in the House of Representatives are unwilling to do anything that could make President Biden look good. In the words of Rep. Troy Nehls (R-TX), “I’m not willing to do too damn much right now to help a Democrat and to help Joe Biden’s approval rating.”
Luke will return again on Tuesday to share what’s been grinding his gears.

The UW Punching Bag (Hour 1)
First up on today’s show, we celebrate what would have been Bob Barker’s 100th birthday. As many said when he passed away, the host of The Price Is Right got as close to 100 as he could without going over.
Today, the Universities of Wisconsin’s Board of Regents meet to discuss the deal that they shot down last Friday. Will President Jay Rothman resign after this major fumble? Who could replace him? Todd shares some information from a Milwaukee Journal Sentinel article by Kelly Meyerhoffer before making suggestions of his own.
Luke Mathers returns for a new edition of Tuesday Tangents, discussing how the UW System has been the punching bag of state Republican leadership for a long time now. He also shares what’s been grinding his gears: the excessive use of linoleum in the 90’s. Listen in to hear what he means!
