APRNs Are A Major Win For Wisconsin Healthcare (Hour 2)

August 12, 2025

Guest: Kelda Roys

This afternoon, Todd asks us What’s Worse: being emotionally closed off or enthusiastically open? We take your calls and texts on which emotional communication style is worse.

At the bottom of the hour, State Senator Kelda Roys joins us in-studio to share some excellent news. Senator Roys was the first Democrat to support a bill that opens up nurses to run their own medical practices in our state as Advanced Practice Registered Nurses, or APRNs. After a prolonged lobbying battle between various medical organizations, Governor Evers signed this bipartisan bill into law last Friday. This new law will help providers in Wisconsin respond effectively to healthcare shortages, particularly in rural areas.

As we wrap up the show, Sen. Roys breaks some exciting news: she is very likely to announce a run for Governor of Wisconsin after Labor Day. She shares some of her priorities for our state.

Two state legislators outline their bill designed to put some guardrails for consumers on these crypto boxes in our state.

Overdue Reform (Hour 3)

July 9, 2025

When the Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled Tuesday that the state could move forward with a ban on so-called conversion therapy, it was actually ruling on a much broader topic: Republicans abusing the rules in order to allow the Legislature to interfere with state agencies. It’s not the only example of an abuse of power—remember those gerrymandered maps? But the liberal justices now in charge of the court seem to be making it harder for politicians to bend the rules. We’ll talk to state Sen. Kelda Roys. Also: Climate Check with Melissa Baldauff, a check on western Wisconsin news with James Kelly, and Earl Ingram launches his Civic Media podcast.

BREAKING: Rep. Jacobson Challenges Sen. Marklein (Hour 2)

July 7, 2025

State Senator Kelda Roys sticks around into our second hour to answer more of your questions on the state budget. Between public education, childcare, and healthcare, this budget is likely a raw deal for Wisconsinites.

This afternoon, Todd asks us What’s Worse: swiss or cheddar? We take your texts about whether you like your cheese hole-y or sharp.

At 11 am, State Representative Jenna Jacobson (D - Oregon) announced that she will be running for State Senator Howard Marklein’s old seat in the 17th Senate District. This afternoon, we are excited to welcome her to the show to discuss her candidacy!

State Budget Q+A with State Senator Kelda Roys (Hour 1)

July 7, 2025

Guest: Kelda Roys

After a brief recap of the holiday weekend’s festivities, Todd turns to a more somber topic: the deadly floods in Texas. As of today’s show, approximately 90 people have been marked either dead or missing. Unfortunately, many of these deaths could have been preventable. Due to the staffing cuts to the National Weather Service by DOGE earlier this year, there were not enough people on duty during this natural disaster to punctually warn the citizens of the area.

Back here in Madison, Wisconsin, several homes of the members of the UW System Board of Regents have been vandalized with pro-Palestinian messages. Similarly, several businesses along State Street have been vandalized with messages stating that it’s time for “direct action” against fascists, with the “A” in action replaced by the anarchy symbol. In Todd’s view, the destruction of property and implied violence of this rhetoric is unacceptable. Peaceful protest is a cornerstone of democracy in our country, but crossing the line into violence can turn people away and harm the credibility of an otherwise important movement.

At the bottom of the hour, State Senator Kelda Roys returns to the show. She provides her perspective on these acts of vandalism before taking your calls on our new state budget.

BREAKING NEWS: State Budget Passes In JFC (Hour 1)

July 1, 2025

Between state politics, national politics, and sports, the headlines are flying by at a dizzying rate. As we begin to unpack today’s news, Civic Media Sports Reporter Mike Clemens calls in to explain exactly what’s going down in the NBA draft. The Milwaukee Bucks have made some unexpected moves in efforts to assemble a younger team around superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo.

After breaking down the sports news, Todd moves on to state budget news. While nothing is set in stone, Governor Evers has announced a potential budget deal that includes compromises on funding childcare and higher education while still prioritizing GOP tax cut initiatives. State Senator Kelda Roys joins us once again to share her thoughts on this deal and how she would like to improve it.

You know it’s a crazy news day when our next guest is discombobulated. At the bottom of the hour, Civic Media Political Editor and Founder of The Recombobulation Area Dan Shafer returns to bring his perspective on the breaking budget news. During our show, the Joint Finance Committee took up a vote on this budget proposal, passing it with a 13-3 vote. State Senator LaTonya Johnson is among the Democrats voting yes, while State Senator Kelda Roys voted no.
