Dark Moments In Our Democracy, but light persists (Hour 2)

January 20, 2025

Harvey Kaye, Professor Emeritus of Democracy and Justice Studies at UWGB, our favorite Delano Democrat, joins us to break down the news of the day.

Today, Donald Trump was inaugurated as this nation's 47th President. It feels like a dark moment for our country, especially with the lineup of billionaire oligarchs immediately behind him for the event. Further darkening the moment, aspiring shadow-president Musk delivered not one, but TWO renditions of the seig heil Nazi salute. We really can't think of anything else to call it. A dark portent that leaves us shocked and horrified. Additionally, last night Trump appeared to thank Elon Musk for winning the state of Pennsylvania for him... through his extensive knowledge of the voting machines...

We're admittedly struggling to find some light today. Which makes it all the more vital that we find it. So we end the show with our recurring segment "tell me something good."

Weekly Best of Dom Salvia Show for Jan 18

January 18, 2025

Catch up on the best of this week's segments and join us on Monday for more!

First, Jack Smith's report on the January 6th insurrection and Donald Trump's role in it, with Maggie Daun from Tuesday's first hour.

Then, how bad of a problem is wealth inequality? Hear from our favorite Delano Democrat Harvey Kaye from the second hour of Monday's show.

Next, on Wednesday, the warring parties in Israel and Gaza agreed to a three phase ceasefire and hostage deal. The event bears strange echoes to the Iranian hostage crises of 1979-1980, which Dom discusses with Matt Rothschild and a disgruntled frequent caller with too much disinformation in his diet. This, from the first hour of Wednesday's show.

Finally, we remember Mr. Baseball, Bob Uecker, with Civic Media sports reporter Mike Clemens from the first hour of our Thursday show.

Have a great weekend, we'll catch ya on Monday!

Are we all in this together or not? (Hour 2)

January 13, 2025

Harvey Kaye, Professor Emeritus of Democracy and Justice Studies at UWGB joins us for the hour. We begin by addressing a caller from the end of last hour who asked, regarding funding disaster relief for the victims of the California fires, are we all in this together or not? Harvey, in classic Delano Democrat fashion, replies with wisdom from FDR's presidency. In his New Deal, FDR instituted the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) to provide jobs, mitigate climate disasters, and provide for the future of our natural world. In short, his answer to our caller is that while we should all be in this together, we are not, due to the economic royalists. Who are those? Well, you'll have to read FDR's speech given to the Democratic Convention upon his second nomination for Presidency.

Two very different anniversaries on this day (Hour 2)

January 6, 2025

Harvey Kaye, Professor Emeritus of Democracy and Justice Studies at UWGB, our favorite socialist and Delano Democrat, joins us for the hour.

We continue to reflect on the solemn anniversary of the January 6th, 2021 insurrection. A day when our Democracy not only stumbled, but nearly fell to a violent mob that sought to stop the peaceful transfer of presidential power. We must remember, in full detail, the horrors perpetuated by Americans against other Americans that day. The day marks a dark mirror of what America is.

Today is also the anniversary of FDR's speech declaring four core freedoms. The speech announces four ideals meant to represent the promise of America and what we can be. Harvey is our foremost expert on FDR, and he wrote the book on this speech.

New Year’s Reflection: Best of Harvey Kaye (Hour 2)

January 1, 2025

Happy New Year of 2025! What would our Mondays be without chats with our favorite Delano Democrat Harvey Kaye, Professor Emeritus of Democracy and Justice Studies at UWGB? Certainly they would not be half so full of historical wit and wisdom! Join us as we revisit an hour's worth of our favorite talks with Harvey in 2024, full hours linked. First, we'll learn about the FDR's proposed Economic Bill of Rights. Then, how common is Common Sense? We'll move on from there and discuss getting radical. Finish the hour with a celebration of Wisconsin's proud record supporting labor rights, now somewhat restored with the overturn of Act 10.

H1-B, is that the next pandemic???(Hour 2)

December 30, 2024

Harvey Kaye, Professor Emeritus of Democracy and Justice Studies at UWGB, joins us for a full hour!

First, as we must discuss, what legacy does Jimmy Carter leave behind? In Harvey's view, Jimmy Carter failed us as president. Afterwards, he did much better; but as president, Carter failed to strengthen democracy and the rights of workers.

Then, moving on to the simmering MAGA civil war over H1-B visas. These visas allow non-immigrant foreign nationals to work- and therefore live- in the United States legally. As part of Trump's promise to deport huge swathes of people and reduce immigration overall, these visas are coming onto the cutting board. But not all MAGAs agree. Some, like Elon Musk, used these visas to come to here initially and own or support businesses that rely on H1-B visa holders for employees. Many across the political spectrum criticize the program for suppressing wages and restricting mobility of those who carry the visas.

Weekly Best of Dom Salvia Show for Dec 14

December 14, 2024

Catch up on this week's best segments!

First, from Monday's second hour, a conversation with our favorite DELANO DEMOCRAT (Dom's making it a thing), Harvey Kaye. What do Democrats need to do to start winning again?

Next, revisiting Tuesday's second hour where we covered the 10 new charges levied against Wisconsin's fake electors. We also spent significant time covering this subject on Thursday with Jim Santelle. Listen to him disagree with Dom's glee over the new charges during our second hour with Jim.

Speaking of Jim Santelle, come back to our first hour with him on Thursday for the next segment. Did undercover FBI agents instigate the January 6th, 2021 assault on the Capitol?

Finally, wrap up with a bit of poetry as we come back to our second hour with Matt Rothschild on Wednesday. Take a few minutes to appreciate Nikki Giovanni's revolutionary life and words.

The American Psyche- it’s not covered (Hour 2)

December 9, 2024

Our favorite Delano Democrat (FDR Democrat, Dom's trying it out), and favorite socialist, Harvey Kaye joins us. Harvey is Professor Emeritus of Democracy and Justice Studies at UWGB, and an avid labor advocate. He sees a path for Democrats to start winning races again, but it will require inviting labor back to the table with a hearty welcome. Critical issues face Americans today that require government intervention. Issues like record wealth inequality. And issues like a healthcare system that does NOT work for the majority of people.

Dems, get your democratic act together!(Hour 2)

December 2, 2024

Our favorite socialist and FDR Democrat (yes you can be both!) Harvey Kaye, joins us. Harvey is Professor Emeritus of Democracy and Justice Studies at UWGB, and a great democratic thinker. With President-elect Trump in line to be inaugurated on January 20th, it's time for Democrats to get their acts together. In Wisconsin, we now see some benefits of banding together in solidarity for democracy and labor rights. A Dane County Judge today ruled Act 10, which devastated public sector organizations, unconstitutional. For over a decade, Act 10 hamstrung unions and limited worker's rights in this state. Now, a chance to start again.

At the bottom of the hour, we return to the matters of pardons and presidential authority. Yes, Joe Biden pardoned his son Hunter over the weekend. We look back on some of Trump's late-term pardons of close allies such as Paul Manafort and Roger Stone.

Another gloomy day… so what’s next? (Hour 2)

November 25, 2024

Harvey Kaye, Professor Emeritus of Democracy and Justice Studies at UWGB, and our favorite socialist joins us for a half hour. It's another gloomy day here for justice as Jack Smith files to DISMISS both federal cases against Donald Trump. Will we ever see justice for our country? And what can we do to move on from here?

To start, Harvey strongly advocates for Democrats to undergo some critical self-evaluation leading us back to FDR style economic policies. Harvey is an expert on the matter, and you can read his work in article OR COMIC form. In odd news, Trump's pick for Secretary of Labor appears to be extremely labor-friendly. Could this actually help American workers? Or is it a ploy to peel off working class voters from Democrats? By the way, if you go ahead and follow Harvey's Bluesky with that link and drop him a note saying you heard him on The Dom Salvia Show, he'll follow you back!
