Hans Breitenmoser
Discombobricated (Hour 2)
Naturally, with Dan Shafer appearing from The Discombobulation Area, we had to research the etymology of that special word, only to end up down the rabbit hole of early 1800s mock-Latin as a source of humor. Hey, anything for a quick diversion from politics, of which Dan will share aplenty. Also, White House senior advisor Neera Tanden recently spoke in Chippewa Falls about more Biden-Harris investments in rural Wisconsin. We’ll cover her remarks with dairy farmer Hans Breitenmoser.

Solar Schools (Hour 1)
In this “Best of UpNorthNews Radio,” we offer free advice to Senate candidate Eric Hovde: Don’t attend a Republican fundraiser in his adopted hometown in Orange County, California. Think he’ll listen? Plus, Hans Breitenmoser helps us appreciate Wisconsin’s growth in cranberries. The Black River Falls school district moves forward on solar energy use. And Chad Holmes has strong opinions about NFL and NCAA football encroaching on Friday nights.

Long Train Runnin’ (Hour 2)
It’s just about harvest time in Wisconsin—and it looks to be another healthy crop for cranberries, in a state that overwhelmingly grows the most. We’ll look at the impact of the industry on the state’s economy. Also, it looks like a Canadian railroad strike won’t happen after all—something that could have had a major impact on Wisconsin exports. Railroad workers in the US also didn’t strike, but have since won some victories at the bargaining table.

Tariffs and Trump’s Next Trade War (Hour 2)
If Donald Trump becomes president again, Wisconsin farmers will have to brace for another trade war with China. Trump loves to threaten and impose tariffs, making them sound like some kind of punishment on other countries—but the real impact is a price hike on American consumers and loss of markets for farmers. We’ll talk to Hans Breitenmoser about the harm done by Trump in his last term.

Conservatives Against Conservation (Hour 2)
We’ll talk to Lincoln Co. dairy farmer Hans Breitenmoser about efforts to protect the valuable farm and land conservation programs that Republicans are hell-bent on slashing. Perhaps we can combine them and let cows graze on the golf courses or other developments that would bulldoze over prime land for farming and recreation?

Now It’s Baseball Season (Hour 2)
Are sports seasons getting too long? We’ll mark last night’s finale of the hockey season—a Stanley Cup game seven that should signify the start of spring, but we’re already well into the summer storm season! Also, Hans Breitenmoser discusses what’s known and not known about the increased incidence of bird flu being found in dairy cattle—none in Wisconsin so far, but no less concerning for those who worry about more frequent transmissions to people.

A member of the UW-Stout football coaching staff tells us about the summertime prep about to take place ahead of the fall season. And Chad Holmes previews what he’s talking about on his weekday morning show in Wausau.

Then, Dr. Kristin Lyerly drops in for a discussion on what is going on in Louisiana in regards to mifepristone and medication abortions.
The, big gas station chains like Kwik Trip have built a successful business model around “get in, fill up, get out.” But what happens when “see you next time” becomes “not going anywhere for awhile?”

Who’s Really Getting Milked on the Farm?(Hour 2)
Senate Democrats recently released their list of priorities for a new Farm Bill—still overdue and still essential for farmers, processors, consumers, and the environment. We’ll compare their proposed investments in the rural economy with the massive cuts being demanded by House Republicans.

Fair Maps impact and what need to happen next.
We talk to Hans Breitenmoser about how the new fair maps legislation has helped get better candidates on the ballot in 2024 and more competitive races. However, there is still to be done to make sure that the gerrymandered maps don't return in the future.
