Day of Announcements 2 (Hour 3)

September 17, 2025

We continue welcoming a growing parade of candidates seeking higher office in 2026, with a visit from state Rep. Francesca Hong, who this morning announced her candidacy for Wisconsin governor. We’ll ask about the growing appetite among some voters for more unabashed liberalism and no more trying to placate the creeping authoritarianism in our government. We’ll visit with Civic Media friends Earl Ingram, Melissa Kaye, and reporter James Kelly.

Crowley Becomes a Candidate (Hour 3)

September 10, 2025

We’ll talk live with Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley, the most recent candidate to announce in the 2026 race for Wisconsin governor, about his decision to run and what he wants voters to know about his experience and positions. Also, we’ll have a guest from Clean Wisconsin on how all of these massive new data centers are sucking up groundwater wherever they pop up, a development that’s good for Artificial Intelligence but not so good for neighbors whose wells have run dry.

That’s Not How Science Works (Hour 3)

September 3, 2025

The trick to writing good fiction — if you work in the Trump White House, anyway — is the ability to pick and choose which scientific facts match up well with your politics. In this week’s Climate Check, we’ll discuss the most interesting work of fiction in DC these days: a Trump administration report that calls the threat of climate change overblown. Dozens of scientists say it’s riddled with errors, cherry-picked data, and misinformation.

The Children Shall Lead (Hour 3)

August 27, 2025

Wisconsin is the scene of a new lawsuit that is taking on a familiar new approach to the impacts of a changing climate: the harm to children. We’ll talk to Melissa Baldauff about these youth-centric lawsuits, the literal cry of the next generation wants their parents and grandparents to stop harming their future environment and health. Plus: Civic Media’s James Kelly reviews some of his news coverage across western Wisconsin. And author Laura Bird talks about book bans, a seasonal recurrence at the start of school years—what to know and how to keep our libraries free.

Rewarding Efficiency Before It’s Too Late (Hour 3)

August 13, 2025

Wisconsin was the first state in the country to use President Joe Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act as a way to put money back in people’s pockets for projects that made their homes more energy efficient. Two years later, it has paid out millions in rebates. We’ll talk to Melissa Baldauff about the program’s success, compared with what the current administration is doing to shift all that money back to company executives involved in oil, gas, and coal. We’ll also talk to Civic Media reporter James Kelly in the Chippewa Valley.

Gas Guzzler Gaslighting (Hour 3)

August 6, 2025

Donald Trump’s Environmental “Protection” Agency has rescinded a landmark policy acknowledgement that manmade pollution from fossil fuels is a danger to human health—and has rolled back vehicle pollution standards as a result, posing a big threat to health, jobs, and the economy. In our Climate Check segment, Melissa Baldauff is joined by Casey Hicks of Wisconsin Conservation Voters. We’ll also check in with James Kelly in Chippewa Falls and Earl Ingram in Milwaukee about stories they’re following this week.

Climate in the Courts (Hour 3)

July 30, 2025

Is Big Oil about to go the way of Big Tobacco and face an overdue courtroom reckoning for its role in putting our climate and human health in danger? If so, there’s no shortage of courtrooms where that might happen. Former US Attorney Jim Santelle joins Melissa Baldauff in this week’s Climate Check to discuss a World Court ruling as well as landmark lawsuits making progress recently in Hawaii, New York, and Italy. Also: Civic Media reporter James Kelly has an update on stories across northwest Wisconsin.

Good Trouble Still Needed (Hour 3)

July 23, 2025

It’s been five years since the passing of Civil Rights leader and former congressman John Lewis, and his spirit still calls us to get into what he called “good trouble” in the fight for voting rights, dignity, and justice for all. Earl Ingram’s new Civic Media podcast asks how we carry that legacy forward—from civic engagement to mobilizing for change, in order to ensure Wisconsin stands on the right side of history.

Making Derrick Listen (Hour 3)

July 16, 2025

The representative from Wisconsin’s 3rd Congressional District is hardly representative of public opinion, which is decidedly against taking away their healthcare and nutrition benefits to pay for tax cuts for the ultra-wealthy, but some folks are going to try again tonight to get Derrick Van Orden to pay attention—if he can rip himself away from Twitter for a few moments. We’ll talk to the new chair of the Democratic Party of Wisconsin Devin Remiker about this evening’s event in La Crosse.

Cows Going Solar (Hour 3)

July 2, 2025

In this week’s Climate Check, a lighter story about adaptation. The knock on solar farms has been that all those panels would restrict crop growth or grazing. It didn’t take long for folks to get creative in ways that make the panel mobile and even provide shade for cows while they graze! And we’ll get updates from Civic Media friends Earl Ingram in SE Wisconsin, James Kelly in NW Wisconsin, Jimmie Kaska in southwest WI with updates on how the new state budget will support UW projects and more.
