Civic Media Spotlight for the Weekend of April 12th & 13th (Hour 2)

April 12, 2025

First up this hour, Earl shares the story of the upcoming annual Special Needs Prom coming up at Washington High School on the Earl Ingram Show. The event is one of the most anticipated events of the year. This year, they are turning the cafeteria into a stunning Emerald City. In its 22nd year, this beloved occasion promotes inclusion and provides a catered dinner, elegant attire, and an evening filled with unforgettable happiness for students with special needs.

After that, John and Gordy in the Morning welcome back Mike McCabe to talk with the show about Byron Kilbourn, a Wisconsin politician from the 1800s, and the parallels between him and  Elon Musk with corruption and money in politics.

Next, UpNorthNews Radio with Pat Kreitlow talks rural healthcare. Even as more rural hospitals close and corporate medicine shrinks its local footprints, a group in the Chippewa Valley believes the time has come to return to a hospital model based on local, nonprofit, independent ownership. If they succeed in replacing hospitals that closed last year in Eau Claire and Chippewa Falls, will it be a blueprint for restoring healthcare options around the rest of the state?

And last but not least, Dan Shafer joins the Maggie Daun Show to discuss the breaking news that Ben Wikler will not be re-running for WI Democrats chair. Dan provides some background on Wikler and discusses possible names that could run for the position.

Wisconsin Cannot Be Bought

April 2, 2025

Guest: Dan Shafer

I’m Dan Shafer. Let’s recombobulate.

In the April 1 Spring Election, Susan Crawford won the incredibly expensive race for Wisconsin Supreme Court. And she didn’t just win, but won decisively, gaining 55% of the vote, a 10-point margin ahead of her opponent, Brad Schimel. It is a remarkable victory.

In so many ways, this race became a referendum on Elon Musk, from his prominent position in the Trump administration to the tens of millions of dollars he put toward backing Brad Schimel in this race.

And Wisconsin voters spoke decisively, rejecting Musk at this critical moment. All 72 counties in Wisconsin shifted to the left from last fall’s election. That includes Brown County, home to Green Bay, where Musk held a rally just days before the election, handing out million dollar checks.

The sweeping results we’re seeing are going to send a powerful message that will resonate nationally. Wisconsin voters spoke loud and clear, saying we cannot be bought.

“Wisconsin Is Not For Sale” with LG Sara Rodriguez (Hour 2)

March 31, 2025

This afternoon, Lieutenant Governor Sara Rodriguez joins us from the road in Green Bay to talk about the state of healthcare in Wisconsin. The UW-System is doing a lot for healthcare workers and retention, but our Republican-led legislature is lagging behind nearly the entire country when it comes to Medicare and Medicaid funding. We are one of two states that hasn’t expanded funding for postpartum Medicaid.

At the bottom of the hour, Civic Media Political Editor and Founder of The Recombobulation Area Dan Shafer joins us to expand on tomorrow’s election. Aside from the supreme court and state superintendent races, the ballot has a referendum to amend the Wisconsin constitution. This amendment would require voters to have a photo ID, which is already the law in Wisconsin. Todd walks through his unique personal involvement in Wisconsin voter ID bills, and Dan explains what the motivation for this referendum may be.

We're also talking about the legality of Elon's million bribery scam. Wrapping up the week, we have This Shouldn't Be A Thing - There Otter Be A Law Edition.

The Impact of Opioid Settlements in Wisconsin

March 27, 2025

Guest: Dan Shafer

I'm Dan Shafer, let's recombobulate.

In the race for Wisconsin Supreme Court, so many issues are on the line, from reproductive rights to redistricting, to even just basic checks and balances.

For right-wing candidate Brad Schimel, though, one issue deserves more scrutiny, and that's his record on opioid settlements. Here in Wisconsin, it seems like we all know someone who has been directly affected by the devastating opioid addiction epidemic.

As Wisconsin's Attorney General, Schimel refused to join multi-state lawsuits taking on opioid manufacturers. We now know these settlements are having a major impact, as new research shows that overdose deaths are declining significantly in Wisconsin because of funding from these settlements.

You have to wonder if things might be unfolding differently, had Schimel been re-elected in 2018. His lack of action and indifference to accountability on this issue should be seen as a real problem as he seeks a seat on the state's highest court.
