The Dish on ‘The Kosh’ (Hour 2)
While in Oshkosh for our show on Thursday, we learned there’s a podcast dedicated to that city’s movers, shakers, leaders, and boosters. We talk to Timber Smith, host of The Kosh. And we’ll review how the media has covered some of this week’s big stories—and how they have NOT covered big stories, even when a story involves a reporter being subjected to a meltdown by a former president.
Weekly Best of UpNorthNews Radio with Pat Kreitlow for Apr 29
This week, Hometown Health was shifted to make room for Senator Tammy Baldwin, but we still have the first part of it for you here. Dr. Kristin Lyerly invited Beth Heller from Wello in Green Bay to teach us about the Farm To School program. After that, you will hear the interview with Sen. Baldwin about the CHIPS act and other topics. Finally, to round out the weekend, Pat is visited by Dan Schumacher to talk about the NFL draft and some big upsets that have happened recently across sports.
‘Farm to School’ and Healthy Hometowns (Hour 2)
The pandemic taught us that our supply chains are more fragile than we once thought, right down to the food we need. The “Farm to School'' program helps connect Wisconsin kids to the nutritious foods grown close to home. Dr. Kristin Lyerly and Beth Heller from Wello in Green Bay will talk about its value. Plus Mark Jacob on whether polling means anything so far from November 2024. And Dan Schumacher on epic sports collapses.
A Tale of Two States (Hour 2)
Thanks to 12 years of gerrymandered Republican rule, Wisconsin is now one of only 10 states still losing out on federal money to provide more affordable health care to working families through Medicaid/BadgerCare. In Minnesota this week, the Democratic-controlled Legislature is beefing up Medicaid/MinnesotaCare with a public option. We’ll explore how it works and how much Wisconsin continues to lose from the GOP’s Affordable Care Act temper tantrum.
The Lives a Red Flag Law Might Have Saved (Hour 2)
The shooting deaths of two police officers in Barron County last week likely came as no surprise to those who knew the suspect, who also died in the incident. We’ll review warning signs from past run-ins that included threats to murder law enforcement officers—and ask again when an entire political class will start putting the lives of cops and kids ahead of politics.
More Proof: Your Vote Matters (Hour 2)
Moving beyond the races that got more coverage this week, we look at the dozens of school referendums that were on Tuesday’s ballot—and how the difference between success and failure came down to just a handful of votes. Also: Mark Jacob on how national media covered the Trump arrest and arraignment. And Dan Schumacher helps us talk sports.
‘Happy’ Anniversary, 1849 Abortion Ban (Hour 2)
It was on March 31, 1849 that Wisconsin Gov. Nelson Dewey signed a law banning abortion. State Sen. Kelda Roys will outline the legislation introduced by Democrats that would restore women’s healthcare rights and undo the damage brought by right-wing US Supreme Court justices when they repealed Roe v. Wade, allowing the 1849 ban to again take effect.

GOP Focus on Tough Issues—Like a State Rifle? (Hour 2)
We live in a world filled with challenges: gun violence, inflation, mental health challenges, underfunded schools, changing technologies. Thankfully for Wisconsin, the Republicans running the Legislature are focused this week on the really tough issues—like their new bill designating a “state rifle.” We’ll also talk to author and journalist Mark Jacob about this week’s national media coverage. And Dan Schumacher looks ahead to the weekend in sports.
