“Sprinter” Sports- Free Throws and Face Offs
Class, welcome to sprinter- that delightful damp windy transition from winter to spring. Chad, host of the WXCO morning show and Civic Media sports broadcaster and Jimmie, Civic Media sports editor, have been two of our favorites for this Friday segment. Today, they bring us a final update on the winter sports and a preview of spring activities. The winter season wrapped with a few location issues that reveal the interconnectedness of these essential activities and local economies. All in all though, this was an excellent season with so much learning for students to carry throughout their lives.
Looking ahead to spring, make sure to keep up with Wisconsin essential activities on Civic Media! Chad broadcasts for the Wausau region WXCO. Richland Center (WRCE), Park Falls (WCQM), and Baraboo (WRPQ) will also broadcast various spring sports. Stay tuned for updates on baseball beginning in just two short weeks! This being Wisconsin, we expect "sprinter" to carry on for a bit and hope for warm sun for our broadcasters diamond-side!

Playoffs Galore- Free Throws and Face Offs, with Chad Holmes
Pencil Busters, can you believe we're in the playoffs for winter sports already? Today, we catch up with Chad Holmes, host of the WXCO morning show and Civic Media sports broadcaster. He's been extremely busy covering playoffs for wrestling, hockey, and basketball. With the end of the season upon us, he shares updates, surprises, and lessons learned. As we discuss here at BustED Pencils, these school sports are not extra-curricular. They are essential curricula for students to learn and practice life skills and navigate challenging moments. The playoffs bring their own set of unique circumstances for students to learn, grow, and develop. Follow Wisconsin's high school sports schedules and events through WIAA.
This will be our final Wisconsin high school winter sports episode on Fridays. Stay tuned for next week's Friday pod with more of Dr. Johnny's WSU hockey support staff. And then we'll be altering the focus of this weekly segment. Join us for more educated educators, talking education then!

Schimel Has Learned Nothing From Eric Hovde’s Failure (Hour 1)
As we finished up the show yesterday, the Marquette University Law School Poll released its latest results. We briefly touched on them, but today, Todd dives deeper. One thing is very clear: Wisconsinites don’t know much about either of the candidates for our state supreme court race on April 1st. Todd’s biggest takeaway is that Americans are sick of political whiplash and are tuning out altogether.
Last night, Vanessa Kjeldsen of WMTV15 News in Madison interviewed Brad Schimel on his campaign for the state supreme court. He echoed statements from Eric Hovde, claiming that people in nursing homes voted fraudulently in 2020. This is, of course, completely false. We take your calls with thoughts on Schimel’s ageist rhetoric.
Nearing the end of the hour, we have a surprise in-person visit from one of the hardest working people at Civic Media: Chad Holmes of WXCO!

Civic Media Spotlight for January 18th & 19th (Hour 1)
Kicking off the weekend, we recall Jane, Greg and Cal inviting Steven Arenzon, the owner of Wisconsin Knitcaps to the show to talk about the legacy of the company, the mission of what they do and why he just doesn't want to print anything with cussing! It is the relaunch of our Beyond The Cheese segment and he brought us custom made hats to celebrate!
Then, on the Chad Holmes Show is joined by Nick Ramos of the Wisconsin Democracy Campaign after eight Wausau citizens filed an ethics complaint against Mayor Doug Diny for his actions with a voting drop box in September.
After that, on UpNorthNews Radio Pat is joined by Wisconsin Supreme Court candidate Susan Crawford, currently serving as a Dane County judge, who is running against Scott Walker’s former attorney general Brad Schimel for a pivotal role on the state’s high court in the April 1 election. Crawford tells the show about her experience and takes issue with Schimel’s recent comment in support of the January 6 insurrectionists who launched a violent attack on the US Capitol.
Wrapping up the hour, Tim Slekar talks about multiple intelligences on the John & Gordy Show, and John and Kathryn give examples of how when they were kids, teachers allowed them to express learning in different ways, rather than a standardized test - and how that needs to be emphasized more now.
