Taking Care Of Wisconsin’s Birds with Lisa Gaumnitz (Hour 1)

May 1, 2025

We begin today’s show with some breaking news from Washington, D.C. that’s very pertinent to Wisconsinites. The House Judiciary Committee met yesterday to sort out some budget concerns. One amendment on the table would have mandated adherence to the Constitution and forbid ICE from deporting US citizens. Per their own operational policies, it is already illegal for ICE to arrest or detain US citizens, but this does not appear to have stopped them in recent weeks. The amendment failed by one vote. Two of Wisconsin’s Republican congressmen voted against it, and one didn’t even bother to show up and vote.

At the bottom of the hour, we pick up the torch from Matenaer On Air to talk about Fat Bird Week. We are joined by Lisa Gaumnitz, the SOS Save Our Songbirds Coordinator! You may have heard of Fat Bear Week, but they aren’t the only animals who bulk up for the Winter. You can head to wisconservation.org/fat-bird-week/ to vote for your favorite chubby birds over the next week!

In addition to the fun competition, Fat Bird Week is all about educating Wisconsinites on how to contribute to bird conservation in their own backyards. Lisa provides some easy tips to take good care of the birds in your neighborhood.

Are you interested in birding? You can observe and predict migration patterns at birdcast.info. You can also download the Merlin Bird ID app to identify birds with a quick picture or song recording.
