All Goosed Up and Ready to Go

September 7, 2024

It's goose season. It's dove season. It's Teal season. It is so very nearly turkey and deer season. Oh Wisconsin, we are entering fall hunting season! And this season, Producer Jess will be going out for her first hunt with Joel and Danielle. Although Jess has not yet completed her Hunters' Safety licensure, she may legally hunt though Wisconsin's Mentored Hunting Program with Joel as her mentor. Side note- Joel organized to pass the bill that created this program during his time in the state Legislature.

Gregg Brinkman joins us today to talk about his love for this special time of year as the fall hunting seasons open. Gregg is the creator and owner of North Wind Waterfowl, your go-to stop for getting everything you need to hunt waterfowl, including a chartered hunt!

This week, grab your goose and watch your language. Our weekly recipe is *checks notes* most certainly NOT sh--t on a shingle. Instead, prepare for elegant, artisanal wild goose on toast.

Tagged? Check. Bagged? Well, the season hasn’t started, hold on!

Wisconsin, in mere hours, it is going to be early goose and Teal duck season. Joel is quick to remind us however, that the hunting season has actually already begun- because SO much of hunting happens before you pull the trigger. It starts with building relationships with land owners and conservationists, scouting locations for future hunts, and obtaining gear and learning how to use it. All things that Producer Jess is now learning, as she prepares for her first ever hunt. With Joel and Danielle's help, Jess now has her first hunting tag (fall turkey) and is preparing- mentally and physically- for this new experience.

Well, thank goodness we had a friend from First Hunt Foundation, Share the HERitage, Ellie Lawton-Smoller on to talk through some pre-hunt concerns! Also joining us today, hunting entrepreneur Jonny Baumann, creator of Tagged and Bagged, a specialized bagging system that protects hunted specimens for taxidermy.

Duck, Duck, Goose, Turkey, and so much more!

What's up Wisconsin? A lot of birds, that's for sure. Taylor Fingers, game bird ecologist for Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, joins us this week to talk all things winged (and actually small non-winged mammals too). As summer creeps on, we are fast approaching duck season, with turkey season right behind. To prepare, Wisco DNR is working hard to determine this year's bird populations, and therefore the length of the hunting seasons. And guess what? YOU can help them with that! Throughout this month of August, you can report sightings of game-bird broods to help WI DNR produce the most accurate, full accounting of available birds possible.

Check in on our Weekly Wisco for updates on sweet corn, Ham n' Jam, and the Harley reunion. Stay tuned for our weekly recipe, courtesy of Taylor, with a bonus from Joel!

Is your goose cooked? If not, we’ve got some suggestions.

Hey there Wisconsin! This week we are absolutely soaking in the joy of Wisco summer and gearing up for Wisconsin autumn- when goose hunting will be back on the docket. And with wild game comes wild game cookin'. There's no one better to walk us through the best ways to tackle wild game than Bryant Johnson: foodie, caterer, hunting napper, and founder-owner of two fantastic local restaurants, Dousman House and Bryant's On the Round. So thank goodness Bryant agreed to blather with us for an hour!

In our Weekly Wisco, we're talking berries, salmon, and the glory of Wisco summer. For our weekly recipe, Joel shares his go-to method for making goose (or any wild game) sausage. He's got plenty of recommendations for using it in recipes- if you can bear not eating it all right away as is.

No Bullets? No Problem!

What a great Wisco week! Milwaukee hosted the RNC, Danielle won a bass fishing competition, and Joel attended an invigorating legislative event to protect our outdoor resources.

Today, Joel and Danielle are chatting with Joel Braun and Kevin Grotelueschen of Serpent Arms, creators of the air rifle, a fully functional gun that is NOT a firearm! Wondering how it works and what the legalities of it all are? Us too, that's why we asked 'em a bunch of questions!

Our recipe of the week is venison gyros! Joel describes this go-to freezer clearing meal. The tragic thing is he didn't bring any to share...
