Fusion Voting & the Fight for Political Choice

May 27, 2025

In a compelling discussion on Wisconsin’s political future, Maggie and guest host Angela Lang, along with Jeff Mandell and John Franke, explore the transformative potential of fusion voting. This system allows multiple political parties to endorse the same candidate, offering voters more nuanced choices and potentially aligning elected officials more closely with the full spectrum of voter values. Jeff and John argue that fusion voting could disrupt the entrenched two-party system, invigorate democracy, and increase voter turnout. They also discuss the historical precedent for fusion voting in Wisconsin, the legal and constitutional basis for their lawsuit advocating its return, and the broader need for political reform amid increasing polarization. Fusion voting could be promising step toward a more representative and innovative political system.

Democracy on the Brink

May 9, 2025

Maggie starts today's show with more breaking news. Mayor Ras Baraka's arrest at a protest ignites a firestorm, as the Trump administration faces judicial rebukes and drops bombshells. In a jaw-dropping move, they're considering suspending habeas corpus, echoing the darkest days of U.S. history. Trump's selective refugee policy favors white Afrikaners while other desperate refugees languish. Jeff Mandell of Law Forward discusses how federal judges slam the administration for bad faith and unlawful detentions, revealing a pattern of authoritarian overreach. And Earl Ingram discusses how civil rights gains are eroding and public trust is plummeting. Maggie and Earl call for Americans to unite and confront these unprecedented threats to democracy has never been more urgent.

Operating in Bad Faith

March 4, 2025

Jeff Mandell from Law Forward joins Maggie to start this hour. The Wisconsin Supreme Court election is quickly approaching (less than a month away!). This election is a referendum on whether we want our government to work for all us or only for a few. For over 100 years, Wisconsin Open Meetings law has required government business to be conducted in public. As Jeff explains though, Brad Schimel doesn't believe in that kind of transparency. To read more about this conversation, check out Jeff's editorial: https://captimes.com/opinion/guest-columns/opinion-case-demonstrates-schimels-disregard-for-the-law/article_b1db02ba-f47f-11ef-8894-df6a5b6ae1b4.html.

David Crowley, the 7th County Executive of Milwaukee County, also joins Maggie to discuss how potential federal budget cuts are going to affect municipal governments. This is an alarming issue effects rural and urban people throughout the state. One in five people receive care through Medicaid. These proposed cuts would be devastating to this country's seniors and children. We all have a role to play when it comes to stopping what is happening at the federal level. If you email your Republican representatives, make sure to include state Democratic leaders so they have a record.

Civic Media Spotlight for January 4th & 5th (Hour 1)

January 4, 2025

Kicking off this weekend's Civic Media Spotlight, Jane, Greg and Calvin talk about whether they make New Year's Resolutions and what effect they have on us if we don't follow through. We take calls and read texts from the listeners on this and give advice on how to reach goals for yourself.

Then, Green Bay based comedian John Egan joins Nite Lite with Pete Schwaba. John talks about the stand-up scene in Green Bay and De Pere. Pete and John share stories from around the state in comedy, and John talks about new dates coming up!

Following that on the Todd Allbaugh Show, Todd updates listeners on the tragic attack in New Orleans in the early hours of New Year's Day. His focus in this segment is on the Fox News coverage. They made up lies about the alleged perpetrator before anybody really had any information, stating that he was an illegal immigrant and this is all Joe Biden's fault. In reality, he was a citizen of Texas and an Afghanistan veteran. Todd emphasizes the importance of truth, and how Fox News has continually failed to reach that goal.

Wrapping up the first hour, on The Maggie Daun Show guest hosted by Dan Shafer, Dan is joined by BLOC’s Angela Lang and Law Forward’s  Jeff Mandell to discuss the complexities of ACT 10 and its repeal. Enacted in Wisconsin in 2011, ACT 10 severely limited public sector unions' collective bargaining rights, sparking protests and debates over workers' rights.

Jeff Mandell analyzes the distinctions between State Constitutions and Federal Constitutions, highlighting how State Constitutions often provide equal or greater support and protection. He states how Act 10 is Unfair and is not constitutional.

Dan and Angela later return to her article, emphasizing that the repeal of Act 10 represents a significant advancement for Wisconsin in terms of restoring order and progressing towards future goals.

On Blanket Pardons and Act 10 (Hour 1)

December 6, 2024

Dom has the day off, so our favorite birdwatcher Matt Rothschild is in the guest host chair! After President Biden pardoned his son Hunter, Americans are wondering whether he will issue mass pardons to potential targets of the incoming Trump administration. Matt takes your calls on whether you think it's a good idea.

At the bottom of the hour, Matt is joined by Jeff Mandell, President and General Counsel of Law Forward. Law Forward is a nonprofit law firm dedicated to protecting democracy in our state, and they have been instrumental in getting fairer maps. Most recently, they helped lead the push to throw out Act 10. Jeff explains the alleged goals of Act 10, detailing why its language is illogical and betrays the bill's partisan motives. Instead of a clear delineation between "general" and "public safety" workers, Act 10 contains arbitrary definitions that line up with Scott Walker's supporters at the time it was passed. Matt also asks Jeff about Law Forward's other accomplishments over the last several years.

Join Dom Salvia every afternoon from 4-6pm for news (some), humor (more), and great conversation (always)! Listen throughout the state of Wisconsin on the Civic Media network and worldwide on the Civic Media app. Call or text to join the fun at 855-752-4842.

Civic Media Spotlight for the Week of November 18th (Hour 2)

November 23, 2024

Up first on this hour of Spotlight, the Maggie Daun Show sits down for an interview with Jeff Mandell of Law Forward on the new case against Michael Gableman for his fake election investigation.

Then, the Earl Ingram Show is joined by Dr. Omar for In the Pharmacy and the two discuss their concerns surrounding vaccine availability and research under the leadership of someone like RFK Jr. at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Next, Major General Randy Manner (Ret.) from National Security Leaders For America returns to Matenaer On Air and he discusses with Jane and Greg what a second Trump administration will have in store for the military if his nominee Pete Hegseth is confirmed. This includes mass firings, recalling retired officers to stand trial for treason, as well as what will be the function of the military on the world stage. He also offers sound thoughts on when to expect major changes to the government.

Finally, Civic Media's Teri Barr joins Maino & the Mayor with another "Slice of Wisconsin" that focuses on the wonders of Jolly Good soda! Lots of great information about the resurgence of the brand, but also the fun memories of drinking it growing up, and the fact that you can find it in your local stores now.
