Growing And Preserving Rural EMS with James Small (Hour 1)

June 17, 2025

Last night, Todd heard from his sources that the Republican-controlled Joint Finance Committee was planning to announce an $87 million cut from the UW System budget today. Late this morning, the JFC removed this item from the agenda, likely due to calls from constituents after the agenda leaked. Remember, if you don’t like something your representative is doing, contact their office and let them know! You just might make a positive difference.

At the bottom of the hour, we are joined by James Small, the Rural EMS Outreach Program Manager at the UW School of Medicine and Public Health. This relatively new program seeks to increase the reliability and sustainability of emergency medical services in rural areas around Wisconsin. EMS is handled by local governments, and young people who could fill those roles increasingly move out to bigger cities. James walks us through how his department is working to address these challenges.

Wisconsin’s EMS problems could soon be a crisis (Hour 2)

February 21, 2023

Did you know that when you call 911, there is no promise that anyone will show up? Or that many EMS services across the state aren't paid for by your taxes? We talk to Alan De Young, Executive Director of the Wisconsin EMS Association, and James Small, EMS Outreach Program Manager for the Office of Rural Health, about the crisis Wisconsin is in when it comes to EMS services.

Then we discuss what races we will be watching tonight as the Spring Primary results roll in and talk about some big Civic Media news.
