Can’t Cut Our Way to Prosperity (Hour 2)

May 20, 2025

With Hans Breitenmoser, we’ll review the latest on Republicans’ efforts to pass a budget that hurts farmers and the low-income families who rely on nutrition assistance provided by our farmers. Not only is Congressman Derrick Van Orden supporting that plan, he’s also continuing to spread the notion that Veterans Administration cuts are only targeting fraud, an argument that is itself fraudulent.

May 6, 2025

Some parents are going to learn the hard way next Monday that Wisconsin remains stuck in a crisis over the lack of affordable childcare options. Many childcare providers will shut their doors as part of the national Day Without Child Care, designed to put pressure on lawmakers to do right by families, the workforce shortage, and the overall economy. Also: On this National Tourism Day, we get an update on one special segment of the market from the Wisconsin Agricultural Tourism Association.

Cuts Hit Local Farmers, Pantries, Schools (Hour 2)

April 22, 2025

Tenzin and Stacy Botsford are farmers in Marathon County who’ve done everything right— growing a variety of vegetables and fruits that can be found at farmers markets, local restaurants, schools, and food pantries. But the Trump-Musk budget axe is coming down on the Local Food Purchase Assistance Cooperative Agreement Program, which buys food from local farms, like the Botsfords’ Red Door Family Farm, and distributes to those pantries and schools. We’ll get into the many ways this is a bad plan. We’ll also update the state budget negotiations going on between Democratic Gov. Tony Evers and the Republicans who control the Legislature. The GOP seems content to again sit on and squander a multi-billion dollar surplus if they don’t get a tax cut plan they like—while Evers has proposed nearly $2 billion in tax relief in his version of a new budget.

It’s About the Rule of Law (Hour 2)

April 8, 2025

During President Trump’s first-term trade war, farmers in Wisconsin and nationwide got $23 billion in bailout payments but they would’ve rather had the $27 billion in export business Trump blocked. Now there’s discussion on another multi-billion dollar price tag to keep farmers afloat during a second trade war—but Congress has delayed some other farm assistance for years. So which will it be: another stiff arm and delays or another costly bailout? We’ll talk to a Wisconsin farmer and a top official with the National Farmers Union.

Gaslighting Gasbags (Hour 2)

March 18, 2025

Now we’ve gone and done it: Congressman Derrick Van Orden called us out on Monday for having the temerity to let you know he’s trying to gaslight his constituents over the damage being done by Elon Musk and President Trump. And now he’s gaslighting over the definition of gaslighting. Weird. Hans Breitenmoser joins us to talk about Madison attempting to take local control away from the municipalities, as well as the exact effects of Trump policies on farmers, as Wisconsin is set to be affected more than any other state.

Doing the Work (Hour 2)

March 11, 2025

Wisconsin farmers recently held their annual lobbying day to tell lawmakers about their top priorities—likely starting with a request to kindly stop trying to put Wisconsin farmers out of business with a trade war and massive cuts to farm support programs. Meanwhile, US Rep. Derrick Van Orden’s inactivity on farm issues and his support for President Trump’s agenda has now attracted two Chippewa Valley Democrats to consider challenging him in 2026.

This (Manure’s) Gettin’ Real for WI Farmers (Hour 2)

February 18, 2025

It’s easy to attack federal spending simply because there are so many ways that taxpayers make a difference and improve our nation. In one example, it’s easy to criticize the federal government for sometimes paying farmers to not grow crops on some land—but that’s in order to prevent fertilizer runoff, polluted streams, or topsoil loss. Now some Wisconsin farmers are learning they’ll miss out on tens of thousands of dollars if their contracts are canceled. Lincoln Co. dairy farmer Hans Breitenmoser explains how it’s short-sighted to criticize spending without knowing the full story.

Other Nations Ready for Trump Bluster (Hour 2)

January 28, 2025

It seems like President Trump has proposed some new kind of tariff every day that he’s been in office so far. Some are happening, others were just bluster. Things are a little different this time, as other nations have prepared to strike back quickly if Trump ignites another trade war. Dairy farmer Hans Breitenmoser talks about the impact on Wisconsin farming and exports if things go sideways again.
