Dr. Joe Gothard
Civic Media Spotlight for August 3rd & 4th (Hour 2)
Up first this hour, Air Force Veteran Roy Rogers joins Jim and John to talk a bit about his experience in the military, which includes the story of stepping on a land mine in combat and losing part of his hand. But also shares an extremely interesting and funny story about his "famous" name. It involves George Washington, Anita Bryant and outhouses.. An amazing story! You've gotta listen!
Then, Busted Pencils has a conversation with Dr. Joe Gothard, incoming superintendent of the Madison Metropolitan School District about equity and excellence. Dr Gothard shares his commitment to elevating both equity AND excellence for all students in the district. He has a strong history of doing just that in his previous role as superintendent of the St. Paul School District of Minnesota. In this segment, Dr. Gothard shares his experiences from Spring 2020, a tumultuous time he navigated as a leader with the Covid pandemic unfolding and the social turmoil following the murder of George Floyd. In his experiences, Dr. Joe has developed a simple question he asks constantly that cuts to the heart of education's purpose: how are the children?
The week ends with a segment from Nite Lite with Pete Schawaba, when he was joined by comedian, actor, and artist Steve Seagren joins the show. Pete and Steve talk Wiffleball, what Steve is painting, and then shares songs that he can be happy never hearing again.

How are the children?
Dr. Joe Gothard, incoming superintendent of the Madison Metropolitan School District now adds qualified Pencil Buster to his impressive resume! He summarizes his introductory framework very simply: people. purpose. pride. His primary commitment is to engaging in open dialogue with the community, so that the school district reflects the community it is meant to represent. Dr. Joe commits to making the small, necessary changes to the structure of school so that every child can flourish, with full pride in who they are. He emphasizes that we need to be asking a simple question to get to the heart of issues in school: how are the children? We so look forward to seeing the positive growth Dr. Joe will bring to MMSD!
