Beloved in the Lord, let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins unto God our Father, beseeching him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness.
Our help is in the name of the Lord.

I said I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord.
O Almighty God, merciful Father, I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess unto you all my sins and iniquities, with which I have ever offended you, and justly deserved your temporal and eternal punishment.
But I am heartily sorry for them, and sincerely repent of them.
And I pray you of your boundless mercy, and for the sake of the holy, innocent.
bitter sufferings and death of your beloved Son Jesus Christ.

Lord, keep your church with your perpetual mercy.
Because of our frailty, we cannot but fall.
Keep us ever by your help, from all things hurtful, and lead us to all things profitable to our salvation.
Through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you in the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
The Old Testament reading for the 14th Sunday after Trinity is from Proverbs chapter four.
Hear my son and accept my words.
The years of your life may be many.
I've taught you the way of wisdom.
I've led you in the paths of uprightness.
When you walk, your step will not be hampered.
And if you run, you will not stumble.
Keep hold of instruction.
Do not let go.
Guard her for she is your life.
Do not enter the path of the wicked.
Do not walk in the way of the evil.
Avoid it.
Do not go on it.
Turn away from it and pass on.
For they cannot sleep unless they have done wrong.
They're robbed of sleep unless they have made someone stumble.
For they eat the bread of wickedness and drink the wine of violence.
But the path of the righteous is like the light of dawn which shines brighter and brighter until full day.
The way of the wicked is like deep darkness.
Do not know over what they stumble.
My son, be attentive to my words.
Incline your ear to my sayings.
Let them not escape from your sight.
Keep them within your heart, for they are life to those who find them and healing to all their flesh.
Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.
This is the word of the Lord.

The epistle is from Galatians chapter five.
idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these.
I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
But the fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness.
gentleness, self-control.
Against such things there is no law.
And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
This is the word of the Lord.
We stand in honor of the gospel.
The Holy Gospel according to St.
Luke, the 17th chapter.
On the way to Jerusalem, Jesus was passing along between Samaria and Galilee.
And as he entered a village, he was met by 10 lepers who stood at a distance and lifted up their voices saying, Jesus, master, have mercy on us.
When he saw them, he said to them, go and show yourselves to the priests.
And as they went, they were cleansed.
And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice, and he fell on his face at Jesus' feet, giving him thanks.
Now he was a Samaritan.
Then Jesus answered, we're not 10 cleansed, where are the nine?
Because no one found a return and give praise to God except as foreigner.
And he said to him,
Rise and go your way.
Your faith has made you well.
This is the gospel of the Lord.
Together we confess our faith is written in the words of the Nicene Creed.
I believe in one God, the Father almighty maker of heaven and earth.
and of all things visible and invisible, and in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God, begotten of his Father before all worlds, God of God, light of light, very God, a very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made, who for us men and for our salvation.
came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the Virgin Mary and was made man and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate.
He suffered and was buried and the third day he rose again according to the scriptures and descended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father.
And he will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end.
And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who's spoke by the prophets.
And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic church.
I acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come.

These 10 lepers are in a pitiable situation, suffering from a disease that took away their health and also cut them off from other people, including their normal friends and family and social gatherings and public worship.
Many people would have considered this disease to be the result of the leper's sinfulness, something that they deserved.
So the lepers would have also experienced some shame.
And because they were not allowed in the temple or the synagogue unless they were, until they were healed, they would eventually die in their sin and shame.
According to the Levitical laws, the lepers were appropriately keeping their distance, living in this village apart from others.
And when Jesus enters their village,
They approach him, but respectfully keep their distance and they know something about Jesus and they believe he can do something for them They have nothing to offer Jesus Cannot appeal to any status or rights they have but it's out of their Desperation their suffering their great need that they plead for mercy
Jesus, master, have mercy on us.
This faithful cry for mercy to Jesus is a good example for all of us.
And Jesus sees them.
He sees them in their miserable condition, and he does have mercy on them.
He says, go and show yourselves to the priests.
The priests would have been the ones who would declare them ceremonial clean, ceremonially clean if they passed the inspection.
They would thus permit them to return to their family and friends and public worship Interestingly the lepers are not immediately healed, but they do demonstrate faith in Jesus word they obey his word and Consequently as they went they were cleansed So together these ten lepers they show respect to Jesus they're appropriate about respecting the law
They obeyed his word and they were all miraculously healed.
It's not until the healing occurs that we're told about a difference among the ten.
Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice, and he fell on his face at Jesus' feet, giving him thanks.
This one recognizes Jesus as the true hype priest.
He recognizes Jesus as God.
He turns back from the way that he was going.
And he's glorifying Jesus as God, falling at his feet, giving him thanks.
Jesus confirms that this is the right response.
Jesus is God, to whom we all owe thanks and praise and glory.
And this one true worshiper, this true believer, is a Samaritan.
This would have been a surprise to the Jew hearing this account back then because Samaritans were considered outside of God's grace and mercy because of their past and their practices.
Jesus was expecting them all ten of the lepers to return.
Not just one.
And he makes this point.
He's saying, was no one found to return and give praise to God except his foreigner?
They're all cleansed of their leprosy, but only one returns to give God praise.
And Jesus commends the faith of the Samaritan.
He says, rise and go your way.
Your faith has made you well.
Literally rise and go.
Your faith has saved you.
Samaritan's faith in Christ as God saved him.
He was now free to live a life of faith in Christ and to follow.
the way of Christ.
No longer restricted and condemned by his disease or the demands of the law.
We don't hear what happened to the nine.
Presumably they continued on the way to show themselves to the priests who would declare them clean and restore them to the congregation.
They do not recognize Jesus as the one true God.
They do not turn back to give him thanks.
They continued on the way of the law from which Jesus had come to set them free.
But that was what they knew.
That was where the others were going.
That was the safe way to go.
They received their physical healing so they could return to their previous way of life.
But unless they turned from that way and returned to Jesus and glorified him as God, they would remain bound to the law.
would not be saved from their deeper disease of sin, they would remain cut off from God.
Anthropocene is analogous to sin, and we are all afflicted.
We recognize the works of the flesh as Paul lists some of them in his epistle to the Galatians.
We recognize these in ourselves, sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry.
sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these.
These cut us off from God and others.
As he says, those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
And we are in a pitiable situation.
We're suffering the consequences of our sins.
Can I do anything to heal ourselves from our condition?
Left alone, we would die in our sins.
So, suffering and in great need, we cry out, Lord, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.
And our Lord sees our miserable condition and he does have mercy on us.
Based on your confession at the beginning of the service, Christ spoke to you, I forgive you all your sins as he spoke to your pastor.
Jesus, the high priest, has sacrificed himself for us and he has invited us to show ourselves to him, showing him our sin and he takes our sin upon himself.
and confessing our fleshly desires he washes us clean.
The saving, cleansing work Jesus accomplished on the cross is applied to you.
And you are made well, sins are removed, you're cleansed and made whole by his word, and you're restored to go your way.
At the divine service, we find our high priest, whoever makes intercession for us in heaven,
We hear the gospel.
We receive the sacraments of Christ.
In the Eucharist, that word Eucharist, same word used when the leper is giving thanks.
In the Eucharist, the sacrament at the altar, the church lies spiritually prostrate before the presence of the crucified and risen Christ, where he gives his body and blood.
His divine cleansing is not limited to the people of Israel.
It's for all who are saved by faith in the one true God, Jesus Christ.
Aware of the nine, we don't have an answer.
Aware of those who've been cleansed and healed by the blood of Christ through the waters of holy baptism.
I don't know.
Do they know that God is here?
Do they know that he's looking for them?
expecting them to return with praise to God.
We were all infected with the disease of sin.
We suffer the consequences.
In our sin, we're not able to stand in the presence of the holy God.
We deserve to live as outcasts along with others who are outcast and diseased by sin.
But Jesus saw us.
He heard our cry for mercy.
He has spoken his cleansing and healing word of forgiveness.
We have turned from our sin and returned back to Jesus and praised God with a loud voice.
We have fallen at Jesus' feet, giving him thanks.
We've come here because this is where Jesus is in his word and his sacraments.
We come here to where God is to thank and praise him.
We may not know where others are.
The others who've been cleansed and healed by Jesus.
Have they fallen away?
Or perhaps we can remind them.
We can find them and remind them what Jesus has done for them.
We can let them know that Jesus is here and he's expecting them here.
The nine Jewish lepers who did not return to Jesus would have observed that the Samaritan separated from them and went on his own.
to praise God at Jesus' feet.
And maybe it was easier for the Samaritan because he already knew what it was like to be an outcast.
If any of the other nine thought about returning to Jesus, the pressure to stay with the group may have been too much.
The Samaritan went with the conviction that Jesus is God regardless of the opinions of others.
And Jesus wants us to also know that he is God.
And he is here regardless of what others say or do.
He is God, the one to whom we owe our thanks and praise.
And the Samaritan gave us an example of faithful thanks and praise.
And Jesus told him, rise, journey, your faith has made you well.
We follow the Samaritan's example when we gather for the divine service.
Jesus says to you, rise, journey with me, your faith has made you well.
May the peace that passes all understanding keep your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

For our land and its people, that God would deliver us from violence and discord.
And for all who work to bring peace, including law enforcement and members of the armed forces, let us pray to the Lord.

The Christ would turn their sicknesses to health and their troubles to joy.

For the followers of Christ here and in every place that receiving His crucified body and His blood in the sacrament, we would be taught and strengthened to crucify our own flesh daily and walk according to His Holy Spirit.

And thanksgiving for all the saints who have walked before us, resisting the flesh.
After whose example we too may cultivate the fruit of the Spirit by the power of Christ, let us pray to the Lord.
For hearts that always long for the dwelling place of the Lord's glory, that we would find our healing and eternal peace in the lovely courts of Christ's Church, let us pray to the Lord.

Aware of the night, we don't have an answer.
Aware of those who've been cleansed and healed by the blood of Christ through the waters of holy baptism.
I don't know.
Do they know that God is here?
Do they know that he's looking for them?
expecting them to return with praise to God.
We were all infected with the disease of sin.
We suffer the consequences.
In our sin, we're not able to stand in the presence of the holy God.
We deserve to live as outcasts along with others who are outcast and diseased by sin.
But Jesus saw us.
He heard our cry for mercy.
He has spoken his cleansing and healing word of forgiveness.
We have turned from our sin and returned back to Jesus and praised God with a loud voice.
We have fallen at Jesus' feet, giving him thanks.
We've come here because this is where Jesus is in his word and his sacraments.
We come here to where God is to thank and praise him.
We may not know where others are.
The others who've been cleansed and healed by Jesus.
Have they fallen away?
Or perhaps we can remind them.
We can find them and remind them what Jesus has done for them.
We can let them know that Jesus is here and he's expecting them here.
The nine Jewish lepers who did not return to Jesus would have observed that the Samaritan separated from them and went on his own.
to praise God at Jesus' feet.
And maybe it was easier for the Samaritan because he already knew what it was like to be an outcast.
If any of the other nine thought about returning to Jesus, the pressure to stay with the group may have been too much.
The Samaritan went with the conviction that Jesus is God regardless of the opinions of others.
And Jesus wants us to also know that he is God.
And he is here regardless of what others say or do.
He is God, the one to whom we owe our thanks and praise.
And the Samaritan gave us an example of faithful thanks and praise.
And Jesus told him, rise, journey, your faith has made you well.
We follow the Samaritan's example when we gather for the divine service.
Jesus says to you, rise, journey with me, your faith has made you well.
Amen.
May the peace that passes all understanding keep your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

For the fathers of the church, that with the boldness of Solomon they would exhort their sons to wisdom, justice, and persistence in the way of salvation, let us pray to the Lord.
For our land and its people, that God would deliver us from violence and discord, and for all who work to bring peace, including law enforcement and members of the armed forces, let us pray to the Lord.
for the sick and needy, including Vicki, Lynn, Anita, Lois, Louis, Marlis, Tim, Greg, Grant, Doris, Matthew, Megan, Melissa, Mark, Ethel, Dave, Peter, Fred, Harold, Joan, Jaden, Rick, Thorfinn, Lacey, Marilyn, Marlene, George, Ann, Dawn, and Florence.
The Christ would turn their sicknesses to health and their troubles to joy.
Let us pray to the Lord.
For the followers of Christ here and in every place that receiving His crucified body and His blood in the sacrament, we would be taught and strengthened to crucify our own flesh daily and walk according to His Holy Spirit.
Let us pray to the Lord.
And thanksgiving for all the saints who have walked before us, resisting the flesh.
After whose example we too may cultivate the fruit of the Spirit by the power of Christ, let us pray to the Lord.
For hearts that always long for the dwelling place of the Lord's glory, that we would find our healing and eternal peace in the lovely courts of Christ's Church, let us pray to the Lord.
For these things and whatever else you know that we need, grant us Father, for the sake of Him who died and rose again.
and now lives and reigns with you in the Holy Spirit, one God now and forever.
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
