I'm Phil Knee with Sports.
We begin with a football preview.
Richland Center is getting set to travel to Nouglaris tonight and I talked to coach Andrew Troxel about his team last week and how practice has gone this week after a tough loss to Lancaster.
Actually really good.
We made some changes.
We've had just a really frank conversation earlier in the week about kind of where we are at right now going into week six, you know, and what we can control and what we can't.
And so after having that conversation earlier in the week with our varsity players, they just had a burden and a weight lifted off their shoulders.
And honestly, this week, they have played loose and they've played well.
And so practice has really, really been enjoyable.
And I think they're just playing confident right now, which is awesome to see that.
If you go back to the game last Friday at Lancaster, uh, if you go to the halftime locker room down 14 to nothing, it's probably different.
That late first half touchdown was really a backbreaker, wasn't it?
It is.
Yeah, absolutely.
It was, you know, um, you know, when you, you look at film and, and again, right, you control the controllables, you know, and, and one of the things that we saw is it was a heck of a punt by Avery McGline down at the two yard line, you know, and then there was a flag, you know, and
And the feedback that we got is that our guy wasn't on the line of scrimmage.
And when you look at film, he was on the line of scrimmage.
But I mean, it is what it is.
And then they get good field position on the ensuing play.
And then they go and they do that.
So yeah, I think if that doesn't happen, we get the ball back to start the second half.
And we make the adjustments that we made or needed to make.
And it's a completely different ball game.
The Hornets on the road tonight as they take to New Glaris, also in the area, some good games, including Riverdale and basketball.
Here is coach Jeff Johnson talking about the Riverdale chieftains.
They run a lot of the same stuff that other teams run.
So I feel like we're kind of familiar with what they're going to do.
Uh, but they, they, they're hungry.
They need to win, uh, just like everybody else does too.
But, uh, you cannot, you cannot look past them because they'll, they'll attack you.
Coach, looking back to last Friday night, that was one of the better games for Riverdale in the last few years, wasn't it?
Yeah, that ranks right up there with some of the top games that I've been a part of.
We qualified for the playoffs in 2013 on the last minute field goal.
And this was just a spectacular game from start to finish.
And to win it on the very last play of the game is pretty special.
Riverdale scored a big win over Peccatonica Argyle last week.
Also in the area tonight, Ithaca Weston travels to Kashton for one of the area's top games.
Here is Ithaca Weston coach Kyle Kelly.
They're always going to be really big and physical and well-coached, so they're actually going to, offensively, they're kind of like us, so they want to pound the ball, then pass strategically when the opportunity arises.
Anything in terms of some of the film you've seen that sticks out of the course of the first five weeks?
They look like
just
the
typical well-oiled offense machine with like said
like their offense that they run.
Your team, you think you've gained confidence, you know, and are you getting
better?
Do
you
feel?
Yeah, I think we've gained quite a bit of confidence.
Like I said, we started really young, but at this point, I can't really say we're really young because they've had that many games to play now.
So like they've grown quite a bit.

The Blackhawks will play host to Platteville and here is coach Tyler McLean.
I think the biggest message we give to our guys is.
You know, all that excitement that builds up throughout the week, all the pep rallies and all the stuff throughout the day to get to do.
You know, everybody's coming to watch football game.
Everybody's coming here to see us have success on the Friday night.
So it's something that we're really excited for, something that we're working for this week to go put out there and put on a good show.
How often do you look back, you know, you do some films from the game in Prairie du Chien, but how much do you just kind of shut that one down and try to move on?
I mean, there was a good balance to it.
They were a very good team, physical up front on both sides of the ball, but there was a lot of good things that we could kind of share and build off from.
And to be honest, a lot of the stuff that we did was more self-inflicted, especially on the offensive side of the ball.
So part of it, yes, it's shut down the film, but there were some pieces that we really wanted to try to clean up and highlight and to really build off of for this next week.
It is the sixth week of the high school football season.

Last night in high school volleyball River Valley swept Prairie du Chien by a scores of 25-13, 25-7 and 25-10.
The win was a bounce back for River Valley after losing in three sets to league leading Platteville on Tuesday night.
Senior Ella Myers had 15 kills aided by senior Josie Mahoney who had 30 assists
Carly Birchfield and Paige Stafford each provided the host talks with clutch plays and the homecoming crowd saw the potential for this team moving forward into the second half of the conference season.
River Valley won the JV1 match two sets to one.
During the match, former coach Lisa Relke was honored as this year's Ted Lin's Hall of Fame honoree.
She is now enshrined in the school's Hall of Fame for her dedication to the school and the sport of volleyball.
After spending time as the head coach at UW Richland in the early 90s, she officially took over as River Valley head coach after the retirement of Kathy Kinney, including current head coach, Mariah Hill.
River Valley has had just three head volleyball coaches in the school's history.
Congratulations to new Hall of Fame member Lisa Ralky.
I spoke with her last night after the match.
I'm absolutely shocked and honored.
just the founding father River Valley and I I looked at and I looked up to him and I actually Really kind of ironically I found a letter he'd written Typed to my team back in 05 At our bank went after he brought the silver ball home and I need to get that to his family It was in a crate I bought home from my office after I retired and it it belongs with this family and I I just can't stand up about
Ted Lenz and the legacy of tradition he helped build here at River Valley.
And for me to be on the wall, that's got his name on it.
I'm getting all choked up right now.
I'm completely shocked.

In soccer from Richland Centers of Idesrup Field last night, the Hornets lost 2-1 to visiting Sparta.
Richland Center sophomore Andrew Matta scored on an incredible
individual effort.
The Hornets play this Saturday at home, nine o'clock start time for their home tournament.
