Phil Nee

I'm Phil Knee with sports.

The state all-star basketball games were played last week at just a game field house.

And now it's on to one of the final events for the entire year for high school sports.

Before the new seasons begin in August, the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association All-Star Game.

That's coming up on Friday and Saturday, July 17th and 18th at Titan Stadium in Oshkosh.

The eight-player all-star game at six on Friday

night and then Saturday at noon the small school all-star games at for the large school all-star game.

Richland Center head football coach Andrew Troxel will be the head coach of the South

All stars, the small schools, you'll be joined by his assistants, Dave Darling and Chris Clurkin.

Earlier this year, I talked to coach Troxel about this great event.

A heck of an opportunity, you know, not only to be in this position, right, but also to work with some of the best coaches in the southern part of the state, you know, and really have an opportunity to coach and work with some of the elite players, you know, that a lot of times you hear about it, don't necessarily get to see play, you know, on a Friday night.

So,

Just cool with all the resources, all the talent and all that stuff coming together.

But I think the coolest thing about all of this stuff is that we have the opportunity right to do something that we love and we enjoy, but we do it for a greater cause and working for the Children's Hospital of Wisconsin.

But yeah, I think just looking at this opportunity, it's a once in a lifetime opportunity.

And so I'm excited to be a part of it and coach with these guys.

How did you first learn about it?

So every year the WFCA asked for nominations and so I put my name out there and just to see you know this would be a great opportunity and and lo and behold they called back and said we would like you to represent the self small all-stars and so shortly after that you know I looked at the pool of other coaches that had been nominated you know and so here we are a few months later with these guys in the room with us today that are very talented in their respective positions.

Did you get to choose your assistance?

Yes.

Yep.

Yep.

So they're nominated by their head coaches.

Um, and so from that list, then, you know, I kind of made the decision based on, you know, positions, you know, in scheme and things like that.

What, what I felt would be like the best staff that we could put together represents most a South small all stars.

Well, the Brewers spotted Cincinnati a three run lead, then came from behind to grab a 5-3 victory Monday night at home.

Joey Ortiz belted an eighth inning home run with a man on base to help out in the win.

We're definitely aware of it.

You know, of course, everyone wants to come through when there's runners in scoring position, but the season's so long, you're going to go through, you know, times like this, but you know, we just keep putting our head down and trying to take good swings on the ball and, you know, good stuff happens.

Bryce Terang also went deep.

Aaron Ashby got the pitching victory.

He leads the majors with 11 wins.

Trevor McGill had the save last night.

Brandon Sprote starts tonight's game and manager Pat Murphy loves his team's fight.

That was a Brewers win the night.

We've seen

that before, but it was gritty.

We had no luck early.

We hit five line drives that got caught.

You know, the kid made an incredible play in center field and hope he's, hope he's okay.

But I'm an incredible play.

The line driving

field by Gary, they got caught.

Sal's line drive right at him.

You know, he can go on and on, but we were having good at bats.

We just couldn't come up with anything.

Cincinnati Reds outfielder Dane Myers was taken to a hospital for further examination after he was removed from the field on a cart in the fourth inning of the five three win against the Brewers.

He actually crashed into the outfield wall, made a running backhanded grab on Andrew Vaughn's lead off drive, then hit the wall hard with what appeared to be his left shoulder.

He held onto the ball somehow for the out while the Reds were leading one nothing.

Reds manager Terry Francona said,

X-rays came back negative at American Family Field, but Myers was still in a lot of pain.

In other games from yesterday in the National League, the Cubs stayed hot with a 3-2 win over San Diego, Miami 10, Colorado 7, Arizona 5-4 over San Francisco, Pittsburgh 11, and Philadelphia 7.

In the American League, the White Sox 8, Baltimore 2, Detroit 7-3 over the Yankees, Texas 6, Cleveland 3, Minnesota 5-4 over Houston, Seattle beat the Angels 6-2.

Interleague play,

Toronto 2-1 over the Mets, Boston 6, Washington 3, and the Dodgers 9-4 over the athletics.

Former Bucks player Malik Beasley is one of six men facing federal charges in a sports gambling scheme.

Four of the six are in custody and an attorney for Beasley says his client will turn himself in.

The defendants are accused of manipulating stats in at least four games during the 2023-24 NBA season.

federal prosecutors say their actions netted $121,000 illegally.

The Packers pay the running backs a lot of money, but several NFL analysts are questioning the productivity the team can expect.

Josh Jacobs is the lead running back for Green Bay, but his stats slid backwards in the 2025 season and he has been arrested in a domestic abuse case.

He has denied the accusations.

Sports Illustrated reports that the only two NFL teams spend more than $21 million more than the Packers.

They're in third place as

As far as paying their running backs, some of the backsliding could be blamed on the knee injury Jacob suffered during the season and the disappointing performance by his offensive line.

Only three Wisconsin Badgers are listed on Athlon's All Big Ten preseason list.

None of our first teamers linebacker Mason Posa is included in the second team lineup.

Posa is a second team pick by several publications this preseason.

Transfer safety Marvin Burks Jr.

is on the third team and linebacker Cooper Catalano is on the fourth team.

The list from Athlon includes more than 90 players and goes four teams deep.

I am Phil Knee with an update on Tuesday morning sports.
