I asked Riverdale head baseball coach Kurt Thompson about the season thus far.
We're playing well.
We played a really challenging schedule this year.
A lot of non-conference games and of course conference games were very tough, but I think we performed well.
We're of course have a lot of room for improvement.
We work on that every day, but I enjoy the team.
I like the vibe of our team.
I like how they get along together like chemistry.
So things are going well.
You have a game against Fenimore, and what does this game mean right now in the overall scheme of things?
Well, it's a very important game.
We're heading into the second half of the conference season, and, you know, we're a half a game behind Mineral Point right now in the conference standings, but there's a long ways to go.
And Fenimore has a really nice team there when he's throwing probably one of the top pitchers in the area today, and he's going to be really tough.
He throws the ball extremely well.
And we're just going to have to battle.
We're going to try to have to work up the pitch count.
And we're just going to have to play good defense and grab home a few runs.
Do you expect a close low scoring game?
Well, I would hope so or think so.
I think that's the way it's going to go.
But it's baseball, so you never know what's going to happen.
But I think we have a really good pitching staff.
And we play good defense.
They're a really good team.
Don't forget, last year, Fenmore went to state.
They also won the conference.
They're undefeated, so they have a really good team, and it should be a really interesting game.
Who's hitting the
ball well for Riverdale
right now?
Well, it's a variety of guys.
I'm not going to go individually, but every guy knows their role.
You don't have to get a lot of hits to have good at-bats.
We have guys that can sack people over, that can steal bases, to put the ball in play.
We have people that can drive the ball with power.
We have people that can get walks.
We just got a variety of things like the balance of our lineup.
Of course, we do have some really good sticks in the middle, which we're, you know, looking forward to leading the team, obviously, but I just think overall we just have a real nice group of guys that play well together and form a really nice team.

We continue our conversation with Kurt Thompson of Riverdale as we lead toward game time between Fenimore and the Chieftains today.
That's amazing how fast things go because you look back, you start it back in March and now you look up it's May 1st and then you look at, wow, you know, by the 28th you're going to be playing regionals, so that's 27 days.
We have 14 games left to go on our schedule in the next 27 days, so to keep the kids busy.
You can't get better if you don't play good teams and play a quality schedule, and I know we're looking forward to it.
Looking ahead then, what division,
where will Riverdale head toward the tournament this year?
Well, we get to go to Division III.
It's going to be a challenge.
I think we're the smallest school in Division III.
And so we'll be in with like your Rivervalleys, Dodgeville's, Britishines, you know, the Cuba cities and so on, mineral points and all that.
So, yeah, it'll be a challenge, but I think we will be ready.
I think that, you know, we got a lot of things we got to cover first before we get to the tournament talk, but that's our end goal, and that's what we work on every day in practice.
And I just want to mention, too, that the coaching staff we have, the assistant coaches and so on, do an amazing job with the guys, and they should get a lot of credit in the prep in getting these guys ready for games.
And do you have any weekend tournaments coming up here in the near future, Kurt?
We do.
We have a little round robin on May 16th, which is Mushroom Fest weekend.
So we have Lancaster and Highland here.
On the 16th, that'll be 9 AM.
We play Lancaster.
Then Lancaster will play Highland at 11.
And then we play Highland at 1.
So it's nice to have a mushroom festival weekend.
There's obviously a lot of people in town.
and a lot of people like to stop over and watch the high school baseball.
It should be a good day for baseball today.
What's the bottom line for the Chiefs
in today, Kurt?
Well, the bottom line is we've got, I think, once scoring opportunities are there, we have to find a way to cash in.
Obviously, we'd like to run the pitch count up if possible.
And then, defensively, we're just going to have to make the plays.
I mean, we can't allow good teams to have extra opportunities.
You know, two things with that, when you have a mistake, you're going to also increase your pitcher's pitch count.
And so, Ethan Cagle's on the mound today.
He's a quality pitcher.
And, you know, he's just, you know, obviously he doesn't want to walk people.
And we want to make them put the ball in play and make the plays.
And hopefully we score enough to win.
I look forward to calling it, Kurt.
Thanks a lot.
Good luck tonight.
Yeah, thanks, Phil.

And then Conlon Walsh, the third baseman, followed by Blake Dickman, who's in right field tonight.
James Schramm at second.
And Landon Kenyon in center field.
On the opposition tonight, visiting Fenimore Molloneagles will start with Giovanni Falardo, who is playing shortstop.
Also, Sean Yankee Fiedler at second base, batting second.
Corey Driesen at first base hits third.
Casey Driesen, the pitcher, will hit cleanup.
Grant Beba at third base will hit fifth.
Jude Kinney at center field hits sixth.
BH is Noah Needham this evening, hitting seventh.
For the right fielder, Peyton Chappell.

Here's this hour's keyword to text.
The keyword this hour is fast.
F-A-S-T.
As in boy, that person runs fast.
All you have to do is go to the Civic Media app and then go to W-R-C-O and text the word fast.
F-A-S-T.
Good luck.
The top three batters in the Fenimore order will be Giovanni Colardo and he'll be followed by Sean Yankee Fiedler and Corey Dresen.
Heading underway from Pickering Park in Muscaday, I hope you enjoy the game.
On the mound for the Chief Dems, Ethan Cagle, and here comes the first pitch of the ball game.
It is swung on and missed.
Nothing in one to the batter.
Fenimore team that went to state last year.
had a good run for coach Brent Shetler.
Nothing in one.
Here comes the pitch inside and hit him.
Dopeilardo is on base, hit by Pitch.
One on for Sean Yankee Fiedler.
Little bit of a
breeze blowing.
We've had some sunshine at times, but the winds have died down.
Hurt Thompson had it all figured out.
He said it would be sunny at game time.
The arrow died down.
You got to believe him.
He's been here a while.
Here comes the pitch.
Swing and a miss.
Runner stays at first, nothing in one, to the matter.
It was almost on cue.
Just a few moments ago, he saw the sunshine.
Roader first, and the runner is back in.
Head first, making his way in.
Tag put on by Henry Drone, but just a little bit later.
Deepton's with a game-time injury to Owen Blankenship, who's not the lineup right now.
Swing, and no, they're gonna hold it, runner going, throw it a second, not in tie.
So the count goes to two and one to Yankee Fiedler and Venomore with a stolen base, a man in scoring position.
Ethan Cagle getting back to work here.
From the stretch, and here comes the pitch, down low.
Three balls in a strike to the batter.
Olden Eagles and Riverdale really closed game last time.
I believe the Chiefsons only were able to muster one hit but still picked up the win.
Three-one offering.
Here comes the pitch.
Bounce toward the pitcher.
Nice play by Cagle.
Throws the first in time.
Back the third it goes and not in time.
Getting in head first was Filardo.
So Cagle picked it up.
waited as long as he could and then threw the first with the runner then taken off for third and he gets there in time.
Corey Driesen will be the batter.
Yankee Fiedler with a ground out hit the ball pretty sharply headed up the middle but Kegel made a nice defensive play from the pitching spot to throw out the runner.
So base runners at third base getting a bit of a lead.
Kegel to the belt checks the runner.
The stretch and the pitch is a strike.
Nothing in one to the batter.
Ethan Cagle with junior right-handed pitcher for the Chieftains.
Takes a look at the runner at third.
Here comes the 0-1 offering.
Bounce sharply off the mound and played at second.
Throw to first in time and the run will score.
So Fenimore takes a 1-0 jump.
They did not score a run last time against Riverdale, so they get a run here in the opening inning without a base hit.
And Dresen will be the batter.
1-3 put out RBI for Dresen.
Casey Dresen will be the batter.
Kegel is set to work.
Lines and fires, a swinging strike.
Nothing in 1-2 the hitter.
Our umpires tonight are Bill Hanna and Don Delora.
Time out for a new ball to come out.
There is some more sunshine.
Gonna come and go today.
Nothing in one.
Here's the pitch.
Outside for a ball.
One ball and one strike.
The field is in striking.
Nice condition.
Nice green grass all the way around.
One-one offering.
Swing and a miss.
Strike two.
Down goes the one ball and two strikes to Casey Driesen.
infield back a couple of steps with two away from the wind up the one two offering swing and a miss they got him that'll do it for fenimore in the opening inning but they do score a run without the aid of a base hit there were no errors none left on after a half inning of play fenimore won riverdale coming up from wrco sports

Next time your vehicle can use a little shine, check out Napa Auto & Truck Parts in Richland Center and Bosquebell.
The
top three hitters in the Riverdale order are due, Bevin Dennis will be followed by Eli Kempel and Ethan Cagle.
Venom or up 1-0, bottom of 1 here today at Pickering Park.
There is the pitch, that's the strike call, nothing in 1.
A.C.
Driesen certainly as Kirk Thompson said, one of the strong pitchers in the area.
Here comes the pitch, that one is taken high.
One ball and one strike.
Bevin Dennis, who took over the catcher's spot earlier this season, in fact, we were at Bosqueville Riverdale event was his first starting game.
One-one offering, here's the pitch.
He takes a look at strike two.
One ball and two strikes.
Bevin Dennis trying to battle, moves up on the handles, here's the pitch.
Check swing, foul ball on the ground, first base side.
I woke up Coach Chris Kenyon, who's in the first base coaching box.
Here's Thompson coaching at third this afternoon.
One ball and two strikes to Bethan Dennis from Casey Driesen.
Here's the pitch, outside.
Two balls and two strikes to the batter.
recent works quickly and works from the stretch with nobody on Here's the pitch swing and a miss they got him one away The batter will be Eli Cambell Looks like it's still hot cocoa season I don't win that But Probably in the next month or so They have the ginger moray track in an invitational tomorrow, and I'm guessing
It could be a hot-seller as well.
Strike called on Camp Bell.
Nothing at one to the batter.
Breeson working quickly back to work.
Camp Bell from the right-hand side.
Here's the pitch, ripped to the air-right field down the line.
It's got promise, but it hooks foul.
Nothing in two-long strike for Eli Camp Bell.
Chappell the right-fielder was over along the line.
Attempted to make a grab in foul ground, but couldn't quite get there.
So they will come back and do it again here.
Bottom of one, sent a more leading one, nothing with one away.
Little bit of a breeze blowing toward right center field tonight.
Though the two strike pitch coming up from Driesen.
Here comes the next offering.
Swing!
and a piece of it.
Bowled back.
That one lands in the stands.
Pretty good crowd on hand tonight.
Riverdale normally draws pretty well.
Nothing in two again to the batter.
Breeson is set.
Here comes the pitch.
Back the batter away for a ball.
One ball and two strikes to the hitter.
Reaching back to the belt and ready.
Here comes the pitch.
High.
Two balls and two strikes.
I don't know where he's had a long string of success again at State last year, but oftentimes a playoff caliber team.
Here's the pitch.
Down low for a ball and the count goes full now.
Three balls and two strikes.
Riverdale hosts a sectional this year.
They'd like to be playing in it.
We'll count offering.
There's the pitch.
They walked in.
So Eli Kempbell is aboard.
One-on-one away for the Chiefsons, and the hitter will be Ethan Kago, the pitcher.
Kago today, the junior steps in.
Right hand batter will see what Riverdale decides to do here with a runner at first base.
Capbell, who is quite fleet of feet, he will get a little bit of a lead.
Now, a bigger lead at first base.
Here's the pitch, ripped toward the middle, caught by the shortstop back for first, and not in time to get Capbell, who is back in head first.
Unfortunately for Ethan Kegel, he hit it off the nails, but right at Yankee Fiedler for the second out.
And the batter will be Henry Drone.
Drone had a big game the last time we were on the radio with Riverdale at Bosque Bell.
Steps in with the runner at first, tying around a board for Riverdale at the bottom of the first.
Here's the pitch, bowled straight back.
Nothing in one to the batter.
Breeze, gotta switch directions a little bit, blowing in from center field right now.
And that sun comes and goes.
It's a noticeable degree difference.
when the sun is under.
Nothing in one.
Here's the pitch popped up.
First base side going to get out of play.
Two strikes now on the batter.
Riverdale track teams working out.
Mostly middle school, I believe.
High school will have a big meet tomorrow.
Ginger Mori invite.
Nothing in two.
Here's a pitch runner going it is a ball throw down to second base going to be close and they Got him That'll do it And the out is made well actually I think they call the strikeout they threw down to second base But it must have been a strikeout because there was no motion of second for the out and they pointed back to the plate and the batter is Out so that'll do it for Riverdale here in the inning no runs
and no hits, no errors, and one left on.
We go to the second inning, Baltimore won, Riverdale nothing at WRCO Sports.

It is the top of the second inning here at Riverdale, and the batter is Grant Beba.
Takes a look at a ball.
1-0, Fenimore.
Here's the pitch, and it is outside.
Beba, Jude Kinney, and Noah Needham for Fenimore here in the top of the second inning.
Here's the pitch.
That's a strike call.
2-1.
Hegel with a strike out of the opening inning.
Hit a batter, Phil Ardo, and he was able to get around on a stolen base and eventually score.
Here's the pitch.
Swing and a miss.
Beba goes around.
And this will be strike three.
He goes out, and there is one away.
So two straight strikeouts for Ethan Kago.
And that'll bring up Jude Kinney today.
One up, one down in the Fennelmore.
Second inning.
Ethan Cagle back to work, looking through the web of the glove.
Here's the pitch.
And that one is called a strike.
Nothing in one.
Ethan Cagle also working quickly.
We're ready to go from the wind up.
There's the pitch.
That one bounces across the plate.
Ball one.
One ball and one strike.
Here at Riverdale.
Special stand is open plenty of room for you there Charge it to Henry Bray 1-1 swing and a miss strike two One ball and two strikes They get me a starburst and some ships and a big pickle and some nachos Here's the pitch swing in a miss batter is going to head to first base Bevin Dennis recovers it throws him out for out number two
So three straight strikeouts now for Ethan Kegel and the batter will be Dylan Needham, the designated hitter.
Still waiting for our first hit in the ball game.
A little bit more leads, one nothing here, this contest.
Two away, top of two.
Kegel from the windup and a swinging strike, nothing at one to the batter.
A talent season will start up in another week or so.
The bootcats have a game on May 10th.
Here's a pitch ripped in the air, deep, center field, centerfielder back, back, it's going to go over his head and Needham is around first, digging for second.
Here comes the throw, he's there with a double.
That was his first hit, a blast by Noah Needham that really carried out there in this big ballpark.
So a rubber up,
Let's start with 2-0-A for Jackson Sheckler, the catcher, number eight hitter in the Fenimore order.
Ethan Cagle gets back to work now.
Runner at second base, the Chiefsons will try and kind of concentrate on the batter.
We're going to get a runner coming out for the DH.
My assumption would be it would be Chapel, who's on the other side of the bracket, and I would assume wrong.
It's Sawyer Swadek, number 20, coming out to run for Noa Needham.
So Swadek is now at second, Frode is second, and the runner is back in time.
Ball goes back to Heath and Kegel as he'll concentrate on the batter.
Runner leads from second base.
Here comes the pitch, swing, and a piece of it.
Nothing in one to the hitter.
and trying to get back to the dugout here.
Fenimore with a man in scoring position.
Nothing in one.
Two outs in the second.
Here's the pitch.
Swing and a miss.
And it is quickly strike two on Sheckler.
Tawadek leads from second base.
O2 offering from Kago.
And here it is.
Down low and he gets by.
The runner is moving to third and he's there sliding it first and lost the helmet.
So Needham takes an extra base.
One ball and two strikes to the batter.
Then a more threatening for Moore.
Swannick leads a third.
Here comes the pitch to Sheckler, backs him away for a ball.
Two balls and two strikes.
A little more threatening again, but it'll take a two-out, something or other.
Two-two offering, swing and a miss.
Big strikeout for Ethan Cagle.
A little more strands of runner at third base.
Cagle with four Ks now.
No runs, one hit, the double.
No errors, one left on.
We go to the bottom of number two.
It is 1-0 Fennelmore visiting here at Riverdale leading the way on WRCO and WRCO.com.

Wyatt's standing in.
He's a sophomore for the Chiefs this season.
There's the pitch.
That one is called a little bit high.
Two balls and no strikes to the batter.
Recent back to the belt.
Hicks and fires.
