Richland Center's baseball team is at Dodgeville and the Hornets softball team is at Dodgeville for a make-up game this afternoon.

Also for River Valley, action today in golf.

The Southwest Conference meet is at Platteville and it's soccer action at Platteville for River Valley against Platteville Lancaster.

Ithaca Weston Softball is playing at DeSoto Elementary today for action in the Ridge and Valley Conference and Kickapoo's baseball team is playing in Stoddard today against the DeSoto Pirates.

Ithaca JV baseball is hosting Adam's friendship this afternoon and as mentioned Ithaca Weston on the road for softball and Riverdale track and field action at Kickapoo today for the annual Kickapoo varsity Invitational.

Ithaca Weston is there as well and the Riverdale softball team is hosting mineral point while the Riverdale baseball team plays at basketball and that is our order of business today.

So far, our pitching and defense was

on a good job at keeping us in the ball games.

We're bringing back two left-handed pitchers with experience and they've dealt some pretty good games for us.

We just have come up on the short end of some of those games with struggling at the plate.

I know you made a run of the tournament last year.

How much did that help you, you know, getting the guys back and in the right frame of mind for this spring?

Oh, yeah, the run was a good thing for the younger kids to experience and be a part of.

But we lost five or 16 years and a couple other guys didn't come out for baseball this year.

So we're lacking in the experience department.

But the younger guys, the sophomore freshman really,

Um, remember that feeling and are striving to get us back there.

Yeah, every year is a different year in high school baseball, but certainly you guys built a lot of momentum down the stretch last year toward the tournament.

And, uh, you know, what was it going to take if you're going to get back to that level again this year?

Yeah, it's just clicking, clicking at the right time, you know, getting all the King cell and, you know, using all these games early in the season to better ourselves and, uh,

and come together as a group and then when you know the end of the season comes hopefully you're firing on all cylinders and everybody's comfortable and the bats start to get hot and the things just fall into place for you.

The SWAL this year, it looks to be really even.

How do you look at it?

Yeah, it is pretty even right now.

I think every team brings a different unique

aspect and it's it's who who comes to play on that day.

I think will be the team that comes out on top.

Yeah, it's it's going to be an interesting shake up.

I know Riverdale started off really hot and so is Iowa Grant and and I'm I'm excited to get get that game in the night.

Yeah, as you face Riverdale, what do you typically expect from a Kirk Thompson coach team?

Savvy ball players don't make a lot of errors.

They're focused, not a lot of mental errors.

They know how to play the game the right way.

And we have to be on our A game to be able to compete with that.

You've talked about your pitchers.

Who do you look to start tonight on the mound?

Yeah, I'm looking to have a pitchers duel tonight with Tyler Miller for us.

He's our lefty senior, only senior on the team.

then I'm guessing we'll probably see Ethan Kegel.

So two very good pictures in this wall and excited to see how it shakes out.

Sounds good.

And anything else you want to say about your team or ways that you can improve down the stretch here, coach?

Yeah, we're a young team.

I'm certain two kids that actually were on the run in the playoffs last year.

Everybody else is underclassmen, sophomore, freshman.

So, I mean, we're learning, kind of learning on the fly.

Every day is just a glorified practice, just trying to get us in the right momentum, heading forward.

And I think we'll be all right.

Currently, as you look at the start of

the season, the team has played pretty well up to your expectations, hasn't it?

Yeah, we played well.

We've gotten off to a pretty good start.

Yeah, you want to obviously we got to improve on quite a few things yet, too.

But we played well, picked up some early wins and the team has, you know, worked well together.

So we're happy with their start.

Has there been a game where you've been, you know, most pleased where you thought you played maybe your best?

I think we played

We played a series of really good games against some really good teams.

I think the Cuba City game was a big win for us down there.

That's kind of a tough place to play.

And traditionally, they're very strong.

We're able to win that one.

Even though we lost to Barabu playing a team up a couple of divisions, that was a big game for us.

I know it didn't come out the way we wanted it to come out, but we played solidly there.

I mean, overall, I think we've done a lot of good things.

But if we want to get to where we want to go, there's still a lot of things we have to improve on.

Do you have a lot of games to make up this year yet, Kurt?

Not really.

Well, we got two games.

We're trying to get them all patched in.

We've been pretty fortunate to get games then.

The cash in game at the beginning of the year, we moved off to Thursday to Tuesday.

We got that one in.

And down here, when we're playing at home, it's pretty tough to rain us out.

So we've been pretty fortunate to get most games in.

Well, it's an important one tonight against Boss Cabell.

What do you know about the Bulldogs?

Boss Cabell is very strong.

I know they might not be off to the start.

They want to be off to, but they've played us really well the last few years.

And they're a very well coached.

They have a lot of talent.

And so I'm expecting a pretty tight game.

They're fundamentally strong.

And so we're just going to have to go out there and play a good game.

They made a run in the tournament last year, which certainly that helps your program when that happens, doesn't it?

Oh, for sure.

It's going to pick up the momentum.

It becomes, you know, hey, let's go play baseball type of thing.

And like I said, they have the talent.

Again, well coached.

And it's nice to go on those runs, have a lot of successes.

It helps us bring you into the summer ball and also then get you ready for the following season.

Talking about

the

Chiefs, you've got a lot

of talent back from last year's team, don't

you?

Yeah, we do.

We have quite a few guys back.

We did lose, you know, five real quality seniors from last year's team, but we have some young guys that are filling in very well.

We only have one senior again this year in Colin Walch.

But otherwise, I really like the mixture of guys we have, the blend.

They seem to really get along.

I like their team chemistry.

And they just play well together.

I think they have fun with the game.

And I think, like I said, we have a lot of high expectations.

And that's what our goal is.

Well, it still seems early because of the weather.

But you look at it, you really got to make some hay in the next month, don't you?

Oh, for sure.

I was just looking at it.

We got eight.

roughly 18 games to play here in from April 21st to roughly May 28th or 20 whatever it is.

So you got about a month to get all those games in and the thing about playing all the games, it's really nice to play the games.

But at the same time, you got to make sure you have room for practice because oftentimes you get caught up in the game situations and you don't have time to practice to get better for the game.

So a lot to do in a month or so and but I know we're up for the challenge.

You had some good pitching performances.

Eli Campbell has pitched well for you, hasn't he?

Yeah, Eli's pitched really well.

He's just a sophomore.

Ethan Kegel, of course, is a junior.

He pitched three very good games for us this year.

And they both have a lot of skills.

It's nice that they're underclassmen.

They're learning a lot.

We have a really, really good coaching staff, assistant coaching staff, excluding me from the really good part of it.

But those guys are really good and have done a great job of putting our team together.

So again, we're really looking forward to playing our game.

We're here for action between the Boscobel Bulldogs and the Riverdale Chiefs.

Riverdale coming in with a record of five and two overall.

They are three and one of the SWAL.

Boscobel won four, oh and three in the conference and we are just about set for game time today.

My first time here at Boscobel's new facility and it is a great facility.

Good vantage point.

Field is in excellent shape.

We have sunshine.

I don't play two or three or four today the way it's been.

We don't have 45 degrees and north winds blowing like we have both to the time this spring.

It's a day ripe for some good baseball and we have it for you between two long time rivals in the SWAL Riverdale losing both times last time to Bosquebell last year.

I believe both scores were eight seven right around their high scoring games at Bosquebell was able to get.

and then of course all part of their good season last year as they went deep into the playoffs after kind of peeking at the right time.

a couple of keys for Riverdale.

Just keep doing what they're doing and playing Riverdale baseball, playing small ball, getting men on and running them or sacrificing them over and moving them around.

It has kind of been the key to success and they play pretty well defensively as Coach Curt Thompson will attest to and that'll be key here tonight.

The Bulldogs are very young squad.

The seniors are Tyler Miller the pitcher and Drew Sander at third base losing a total of

five seniors to graduation last year, and really only a couple of guys back that played significant time last year for the Bulldogs.

But high school baseball, it's all about a new year, and the chance to gain experience as basketball did last year, and really peaked at the right time.

So both teams, I think both coaches will say that they are young squads.

Everybody will coming in with, let's see, Conlon Walsh is a senior this year.

And that is about it, if I'm not mistaken.

Devin Dennis is a junior and he leads it off.

Infield is in really good shape with the new savings or sand, I guess they call it, on the field.
