Former River Valley player and current teacher at RVHS Matt Bakum takes over the RV baseball program this year. Our one win was home against Fenimore, which was an impressive one. We got down six to one and they're a good team, but we kind of hung with it, battled back, took advantage of some of their mistakes and pulled the win out. So we're excited to get into conference play and just kind of see how we stack up against the other teams in the SWC. You have some letter winners back from last year's team.
We've got a few, yeah, that Quincy Blakely, a pitcher, Jaden and Jordan Gogger, center field and second base, respectively. Keegan Heiser, who's a third baseman in the pitcher. Drew Riedel, who's our primary catcher. Oh, Caden Plumlee, of course, who's our shortstop in the pitcher too. So we've got a good nucleus of senior players who are coming back. We're going to help us out.
From what you've seen in the conference, maybe some early scores or what you remember from last year Who do you think the teams to beat in the league will be this year, man? I think I think it's gonna be dodgeville Dodgeville one conference last year. They bring back the majority of their Team I was actually able to poach there. I'm sorry. They're pitching coach Jay Jones who coached me forever when I was growing up He's down in our staff, but he was up at dodgeville for the last eight years So I've heard quite a bit about them. They've got a good a good squad. So I
I think, you know, it'll be a battle for second, third and fourth place. I think we'll be competitive, but I think Dodgeville will, at least early on will be the favorite. Another key I think about with River Valley baseball always seems like he had pretty good team speed on the base pass and everything. How does it look this year? That's absolutely true. I'd say, you know, very nearly top to bottom. I think we have almost a dozen stolen bases already. So that is definitely a strength. And it's more of an emphasis point to get on base because when we get on base,
We have some tremendous athletes who can really be a problem for opposing pitchers and opposing defenses. So being able to put that pressure on, getting on base, stealing bases, it's pretty academic. But being able to do that is going to help us win a lot of games. Facing Richland Center, and you remember this from your playing days too, this is one of the teams that you circle on the calendar, where it's really an event when the two teams play, isn't it? It is. And to further it, my dad is
taught at Richland Center forever, so it was always a complicated relationship for me as playing in River Valley, but my dad teaches over there. Yeah, it's going to be interesting to open up the conference in my first season coaching here. I know the guys are looking forward to it. We'll see. I don't know much about Richland Center in terms of what they are bringing back, but I know, and again, it's going back 20 plus years, but regardless of what the quality of the teams were,

We played down in Kentucky, obviously. It's a bummer that Boston canceled because it was too cold, apparently. But kind of what we thought Wisconsin baseball is all about. But nevertheless, yeah, our first game in Wisconsin is against Conference opponent. But we're ready to go. I mean, our guys are hungry, and we're ready to play. And we want to play. We wish the game was happening right now. And we're going to be excited for 5 o'clock tomorrow.
Well you look at your opponent River Valley and some years you kind of know what to expect. They've got a new coach and some unknowns this year Ryan. Yeah unknowns with coaching staff but we know the guys are coming back and we feel like got a good game plan for them. So we're excited to get going. We just want like I said we wanted to be five o'clock tomorrow. You guys have been working on the field I know off and on since last year and how's it shaping up for this first home game.
The field is draining ever since I've been here. We do a lot of work on it. We're trying to get some mass to grow in some spots, but it's a slow process there. But other than that, the field is in great shape. And we're excited to be on it tomorrow. Obviously, we've been out on it a lot of days of practice. So we're excited to show it out a little bit tomorrow night.
talk about your leaders. I think we did a little bit of that earlier, but you've got some strong guys coming back to lead the team, don't you? Yeah, absolutely. We've got a great core coming back, and they'll be on full display tomorrow. We'll get a lot of big surprises. We've seen so far this year, and, you know, talk about the team captain by Brady Dosh, Isaac Galb, Deacon Heiss, those guys that are just so athletic.
and can get it done both offensively and defensively and on the bump. So it's fantastic to have those guys also get some fun surprises over the off season and some guys that put in a ton of work over the off season and showed. So we're going to have a completely new lineup for you and we're excited to show that off. As far as pitching experience, you've got quite a few arms, do you?
got quite a few arms absolutely yeah we're locked and loaded both on for starts and out of the ball or out of the bullpen so we're really excited to get going this is kind of a slow stretch here in season we only have two games in two weeks but after that things pick up pretty quick and we're ready for it our arms are locked loaded and just want to start playing games
Sometimes early in the season, Ryan, you know, and I know that the bats can be a little bit behind the defense. So how do you think it's going to be for the Hornets now that you've had a few games to play? Yeah, our offense has looked really good down there against really high caliber pitching, like hitting the baseball hard all over the field. Obviously, it's a little bit easier in that warm weather. It was 80 degrees. It's not even the whole time we're down there, but so it's going to be a little chillier than that tomorrow.
I expect our offense to have a big day. I expect our offense to continue to roll through the early part of the season.

Yeah, of course. I have two captains this year, Sylvia Schmidt, who's a senior, and Mariah Abde, who's a junior. We have them two back, and then we have a good defense coming back. Just need to keep working together. So juniors Bryn Anderson, Ella Stadler, and sophomore Harper Glass Brenner. When you look at the schedule and the conference, what do you think the teams to beat will be in the Southwest this year? This year, I for sure think it'll be Platteville Lancaster and River Valley.
We had a tough one against River Valley last night, but those two always look to be the tough ones, especially this year in the conference. Shawnee, think Crystal Center Girls soccer coach.
