Today the Richland Center girls softball team is opening up its season against Wasika Steuben.

Hornets made a nice run on the tournament last year getting to the sectional final and they're opening up the season today on their home field.

The Hornets representing the Ridge and Valley Conference was Zika Steuben, his coach by Dustin Smith.

I have a couple of returning All-State players from the previous year, Isabella Bunders and Brianna Ray.

Isabella is a senior this year and she will be my senior shortstop.

And then Bri, like I said, she was All-State from a year before.

She is my pitcher and also my third baseman.

But there are also many other contributing girls on our team that are eager.

and ready to, uh, you know, start to carve out a name for themselves too.

You matched up with original center a year ago.

Uh, what do you expect from them knowing a little bit about them going into this year?

Um, well, I, um, last year, um, they were on the up and up and I don't think that they were going to surprise any teams this year.

Everyone knows what caliber of team they are, especially with, uh, the Fisher girl taking the center circle.

I believe she's a sophomore this year.

So I can only imagine.

that she's gotten better from the previous year.

Needs for improvement for this year's Wazika team.

Reps and just playing time out on the field.

We have a lot of returning girls from the previous year, but we have also lost many contributing seniors from graduation, so there are going to be some of these girls that are very inexperienced.

I think getting them out in the field, repetitions, going through situations, you know, things like that, that way they feel comfortable and ready to, you know, contribute.

Jamie, what have you liked about practice for a couple of weeks?

What have you seen from the Hornets?

Well, good attitudes, a lot of hard work.

It's been tough getting in some good practices, I guess we call them because there's just been, you know, that big snowstorm last weekend and we missed practice Monday.

That was one of our days we were scheduled to be in in the morning and the afternoon.

We had to delay our scrimmage with Ithaca the Monday night just because of that because we originally had it planned for Saturday.

They didn't have enough practices and per WIA the scrimmage.

And then again with Tuesday nights game scheduled with the Dells, we had to move that back too.

So looks like we're good to go with practices for the game against Wasika.

And we should be able to keep moving forward.

It was nice to get outside.

I felt last night was probably our best practice of the season so far because we were able to get down on

our field and just do what kind of pick up and do what we were doing at the end of last season.

They gained a lot of momentum at the end of last year had a had a good finish but you kind of you got to keep building on that don't

you.

Yeah and I think that's part of the problem you know there's a lot of expectations now with the coaching staff the girls and I'm sure even the community members but you know I'm fairly new to this yet but you know just seeing the my first year of

turning through with the seniors that were there last year, which is so good.

And they were such, you know, just good leaders and they just were so smart and, you know, kudos to Dave Darling.

He, uh, coached those girls growing up and he's there with us again this year.

But, uh, you know, like I said, I think we're going to be fine.

And I think it's going to take some time to just get those reps in and figure out, we're still figuring out some positions.

And once we do, I think we'll be okay.

An important game Thursday to get in here against was he could stupid?

Do you know anything about them?

Well, last year they beat,

down there.

It was a really wet night.

That was kind of stepping stone, I think for us that last year.

That's when things started clicking.

And I think if you look back at our record after that loss, we really went on a roll.
