I am Phil Ne, with an update on WRCO sports. Our top local story, state individual wrestling
gets underway later today. We're all set for the coverage, and Bill Twining has more.
Today, tomorrow's wrestling consists of consolation round activity throughout the day, then semi-final
action in the 7 o'clock Friday night session, again in both boys and girls' divisions. Then
on Saturday, more consolation round matches, including matches for 5th and 3rd places, with
the championship finals for both boys and girls beginning at 530 Saturday evening at the
Cole Center in Madison. Individually, there are two wrestlers in the boys'
turni seeking their 4th state title, Kellyn Woolbert, of O'Connor, Milwaukee, Division
1, and Hawkins Peterson of Dodgeville, Division 2. There are also two wrestlers in the girls'
tournament, trying to become the first 4-time state champs for the girls, Taylor Whiteing
of Lena, and Carly Cheshire of Badger. Four other girls are looking for their 3rd state
title, Angie Bianchi of Two Rivers, Maddie Peach of Milton, Lily Banks of Monashia, and
Brooke Huffman of Wittenberg, Burnhamwood, while Liam Crook of Cocana hopes to become
a 3-time state champion for the boys. Qualifying for the state tournament for a straight
year is a difficult achievement to say the least, but there are 48 wrestlers in this year's
state wrestling tournament who have done just that. 14 for the girls, 13 boys in Division
2, 11 in Division 3, and 10 more in Division 1. Four-time state qualifiers from our area are
Deelia Collins of Mineral Point, Olivia Ball of Lancaster, Brody Mease of Riverdale, Jackson
Bussey of Iowa Grant Highland, Hocken Peterson of Dodgeville, Gillen Ligel of Belmont Plattville,
Eli Leonard of Mounthor of Barnabeld, and Mason Spear of One A Key.
WRCO sports will be on hand at the state wrestling tournament to follow the fortunes of
these area wrestlers, Madeline Muller and Caley Spilde of Richland Center, five from Riverdale,
defending state champion Grant Matthews, along with Brody Mease, Lakota Brewer, Wyatt
Shramp, and James Shramp. Boscow Bell-Wazika Stuban has a pair of wrestlers in Ashton,
Utilhoven for the boys, and Peyton Sander for the girls. North Crawford Seneca is represented
by Senior Adrienne Logue. I have a Grant Highland has Rowan Altman competing for the girls, and
five in the boys tournament, defending state champion Jackson Bussey, along with Brock
Hiderman, Ty Cuts, Griffin Winesky, and Wyatt Hoffman. Dodgeville has three wrestlers at
state, three time defending state champion Hawken Peterson, along with Nathan Johnson and
Shane Roshan. Cashton has brothers, Parker and Ryland Mills in their wrestling at state.
Brookwood Senior Drew Powell and the Soto sophomore Kenoa Rogers will both be competing, and
mineral point wrestlers will be everywhere at the Cole Center, as Deulia Collins and
Tatum James represent the girls, and no less than seven boys are ready to go. All under
classmen, Frig Riley, Memphis Burkhalter, Liam Carey, Samuel Springer, Mason Skullian,
Emmett Collins, and Jacob Dannenberg. Area teams that will not have anyone competing in
the state wrestling tournament this weekend include River Valley, Ethica Weston, Kikapulafar
Youth Initiative, Hillsboro, Royal Waniwak Center, New Lisbon, Baroque Web, Westby, Wisconsin
Bells, Portage, and Tomah. Join us later today for reports this afternoon and live coverage

Werman, I'm Bill Twining. Thanks, Bill. A couple of the Riverdale wrestlers headed
to state were in our studio earlier this week. I had a chance to talk to Brody Mies about
his state tournament first round draw. I got the three seat at state, but I mean, it
don't really matter. You kind of have to beat everybody if you want to be the champ anyway.
So the seating doesn't really affect me. I don't think about that. It's just going out
there and giving it everything. Right. And Riverdale wrestlers are tough
schedules, so you're pretty well seasoned by the time you get to state, aren't you?
Oh, yeah. We got five going this year, which is big for Riverdale. I mean, that's
the second most we've ever sent. So that's pretty good that we got that many.
Strengthen numbers, right? Yeah, it definitely. And the practice room is still busy this time of
year. Yeah. I mean, even with the kids that didn't make it the state, they're still showing up and
helping out whatever they can, which is great. And the Riverdale defending state champion Grant
Matthews talked about preparations for state. In the practice room, it's kind of hard and a lot of
people like to practice with me, but there's a lot of good alumni that come in and practice with me,
and I'm really appreciative of that. And I don't know. You just gotta go and have some fun.
Until your last is my last year, I want to have fun. Right. And spend fun this year as well. Yeah,
we've we've done pretty good this year as a team. We normally we at least have five or more kids in
the finals and all of our tournaments, which is a lot of fun when you teams are winning. And it's
it boosts your morale as a team. I know that the new sectional, they took fewer to state,
but Riverdale is still able to get five through by only taking two at each weight class, but
you got to be proud of that. Yeah, I'm proud of all my teammates. They put in a lot of work and
a lot of people go to a lot of extra stuff and take the time to do that. And I'm grateful for that.
Do you know much about your draw? I'm got the two seed and I'm not too worried about it. I
I'm pretty confident and I just got to wrestle one match at a time, focus on that. Right,
that's kind of hard to do, isn't it? Yeah, you get in your head sometimes like in your future matches,
uh, you just kind of got to focus on your first one and go from there. Riverdale senior Grant Matthews

The Badgers lost to a team with a lesser record last night, as Oregon knocked the Badgers off 85-71.
Oregon improved to 11-17, just 4-13 in the Big 10. The shots were in falling in Wisconsin's
loss. The Badgers hit just 33% from the field. John Blackwell was the top score with 22,
Wled by three and a half, 33-30, but was outscored 55-38 the rest of the way.
Its record falls to 19-9 with an ex-game Saturday against the Washington Huskies.
Bobby Portis connected on a jump shot from the free-throw line with 20 seconds left,
giving the Bucks a 1-18-1-16 win over Cleveland last night. The Cavaliers were going without
three players, including James Hardin, Yanis Anthony Kubo missed his 13th straight game.
Kevin Porter Jr. led Milwaukee with 20 points, and Ryan Rollins added 18. The Bucks are at
home Friday night for a game with the New York Knicks. Also yesterday, you'll leave Milwaukee
defeated Youngstown State 78-65. The Marquette women were winners against Xavier 77-65.
Second Maceman Bryce Tarrang went deep twice in Wednesday's 13-12 win by the Brewers.
Milwaukee and San Francisco combined for a dozen runs in a wild fourth inning. Tarrang
drove in five runs. He is set to play for Team USA in the World Baseball Classic next month.
Aaron Ashby starts for Milwaukee this afternoon against the Texas Rangers.
The Lightsox lost two Cincinnati 3-2 yesterday, among the spring games,
Boston 5-Minnesota 3. The Cardinals six nothing over the Metz, and Colorado beat the Cubs,
