I am Phil me with WRCO sports. It's high school wrestling, getting into the postseason this weekend with the WIA girls
regionals held on Friday night in most locations, including right here in Richland Center. And then the boys will wrestle on Saturday at Richland
Center high school, a division to sectional featuring a 16 man bracket. And it will be a wrestling through to first place. The top two go to the
state tournament in a couple of weeks. And the top teams, the top six teams move on to the team sectional following week. I talked to River Valley coach Shane legal about getting ready for the postseason.
We've had a good week of practice this far and hoping to build off of just some momentum of what practice can bring with our energy and focus. So yeah, looking forward to it.
Looking at the sectional, super sectional, you've been able to learn a little bit more about it. Anything that you're taking from it, you're telling the guys to be ready for.
Yeah, I mean, it's new this year, right? A lot of different things are new to us coaches, to athletes. But at the end of the day, what hasn't changed is the circle out there.
So I kind of do what the changes our coaching staff does. And when it comes to the wrestlers, the message really hasn't changed. It's it's focused on themselves and let the winning take care of itself, right?
Like we got to go out there. We got to compete. We got to battle. And those things will never change. So yeah, it's best of the best, obviously. And you're seeing some teams that you don't normally see in this part of the state in the sectional.
It's it's going to be a tough one. I mean, this is a real buzzsaw and Saturday isn't it? Yeah, absolutely. And I think, you know, the message is we can't really control that, right? That's that's something the WIA does.
And, you know, we're just grateful for the opportunity, right? We get some teams that we haven't seen or don't see often. And they happen to have some good wrestlers, right?
So, but we got to believe that we're good as well and go out there and compete. Just, yeah, we're grateful for the opportunity to wrestle those type of teams. And I think it's a great test, you know, it's it's something that's great for our part of the state.
Like you get get those together, the best wrestlers going to win no matter what type of, you know, level of the sectional it is, the best wrestler will win. And then you want to get to state, you're going to get there, you know, you're going to punch your ticket and the rest will take care of itself.
Only taking two, you know, it is, you really got to be at your best. And if you don't, you aren't successful to get into the finals, you got to hope that you can somehow make it back to number two then, right?
Definitely. Yeah, it's, you know, the tournament's not over till it's over, you know, and so if there's a time where you get beat late, like we got to keep battling, you know, you don't know what's what will happen.
But like I like it's kind of sad, you know, the message is continue battle for six minutes and let everything else take care of itself.
I sound like a broken record here, but that really is the truth, you know, like all of where you were going to end up, that's going to take care of itself.
And, you know, hopefully we're just one of those top two.

Ithaca Weston will be among the teams heading to Brookwood on Saturday.
And that's another extremely tough one, taking the teams out of there in the top two at each weight class.
Marcus McCauley, co-ed coach of Ithaca Weston, talk to me this week.
Grestling's a long season and you get beat up along the way.
So we try to get healthy right before February starts and you're ready for the grind of February.
I'm guessing you've looked at all of the scenarios here for Saturday.
And how does it line up in terms of the bracket and how's it going to work here on Saturday?
Yeah, so you're using 16 member brackets, it was the first round out of the tournament.
And then after that, it's true that's the back of the second with top two qualifying for the state tournament.
As far as we said, we're definitely not the favorites anywhere, but there's nothing wrong with that.
You know, that's where the rest of the tournament, anything can happen on any given Saturday.
I'm liking our odds, I think we'll be all right in a few weeks and hopefully we'll get some guys on Madison.
Yeah, it's going to be a big day, you know, you're throwing in a mix with a lot of big schools across the coinus coming in here.
But who do you think the team favorites could be on Saturday marches?
Yeah, I think the team favorites are going to come down to probably a coinus.
And then Lancaster won the clash two weeks ago now.
And then I would grant always right on their heels too.
So I think those three will be your top scoring teams when it's all sudden done.
Well, we'll kind of wait to pass judgment on it as the season ends here.
Can you see like maybe some tweaks or changes for the coming years with the super sectional and those kind of things?
Yeah, I mean, the coaches association has always advocating for different changes to make it the best possible scenario for all the schools.
You're never going to make everyone happy, and that is what it is.
But I'm sure there will be changes. What exactly? I don't know.
I mean, there's been a lot of changes in the last five years alone.
So I can see more changes what it looks like.
Exactly. I'm not sure.

I was just missing shots in that first quarter.
But then just reaching the space and just taking whatever
they were giving me.

And current coach Doc Rivers announced as finalist on Wednesday.
Johnson averaged more than 20 points a game over his 11-year career.
Rivers is sixth in coaching wins with 1184 after Wednesday night's victory.

I've been training for four years since the last Olympics.
And you only get one shot to be able to win gold in the 1000.
So I was able to do that and just having the feeling of the crowd
and everybody around you like waiting and kind of expecting you to win.
But it's one thing.
Having people expect you to win then actually achieving that.
And the feeling of that's pretty surreal.
