I'm Filney with a look at Southwestern Wisconsin sports today.
Well, it's a big busy night for high school girls basketball teams get to action tonight.
It's the first night that games can be scheduled after practice began last Monday.
Was it a stupid place at Southwestern?
Adam's friendship at Black River Falls.
LeFarge is at Brookwood.
Seneca at Austin, low dive at River Valley as the Black Hawks open their season at home.
Kickapoo will travel to the Veroku Black Hawks.
North Crawford at Waniwak Center.
Landcaster is at Mineral Point.
Wisconsin Dells at Redesburg.
Cashton visits Seneca.
Potosi Castville at Boskebel.
Highland visits Phenomore.
Platteville is home against Sparneville.
In our first winter sports broadcast of the season,
tonight as the Riverdale Chiefs traveling to take on the Western
Ithaca Girls Basketball Co-op team.
I talked to Larry Swigham, Riverdale Girls Basketball coach,
yesterday about how things have been going early on for his team.
And I'm glad we start the season with a scrimmage every year and out of game.
We definitely a lot of takeaways.
Just things that we need to show up before tomorrow night's game.
But overall, we went about 12 deep and saw a lot of really positive things from a lot of girls.
So it was some great competition.
Richardson Center and Hillsboro both looked to be very, very competitive this year as well.
And kind of exposed us on a few things that we need to tighten up before tomorrow night's game.
And looking at your team this year, who do you have back and who do you look at as your leaders?
Yeah, so we returned three starters.
One of them being all conference player, Macy McKay.
She led us in scoring last year and rebounding.
I think it was 13 and 12.
Second year in a row, she's average at double-double.
She is really, our offense and our defense going to be kind of centered around her.
Kind of a captain last year as well as a junior.
So she's our rock.
We also returned starters in Allie Goblin and Senior Lily Barr as well.
And we returned quite a few, going to be juniors.
They got a lot of playing time as of right now.
We've got Bailey Harris, who started a few times for us last year as well.
Looking to be in the starting lineup as well.
And just a whole bunch of sophomores and juniors.
Realistically, this is kind of an uncomfortable position in the fact that I really don't know
what our rotation is going to look like yet.
We could go as far as 11, 12 deep.
It's going to be a lot of whoever has the hot hand is going to get the minutes.
It's not always going to be the girls that are starting that are going to play the most minutes.
It's whoever's playing well.
And early in the year right now with four games between now and Thanksgiving,
it's going to be good opportunity for us to kind of figure out some of that stuff.
That is Larry Swigham, head coach of Riverdale.
David Clang has head coach of Weston, Ithaca.
We're kind of figuring things out, especially bringing back relatively young team,
where we've kind of graduated the last couple of years.
We've graduated a lot of players, a lot of talent.
So it's been kind of one of those things to mesh with the new talent.
Plus you throw in there that we're kind of meshing a whole another school in.
Like, yeah, we had summer league to kind of work through that,
but not everybody was there.
And so it's been kind of a work in progress,
but we're making games and that's nice to see.
Now, how is the merge with Weston going in?
A couple of girls came last year for the JV, didn't they?
Yeah, they came last year, a couple of them did.
And then the summer, we kind of meshed with some of them
and tried to get kind of the working pieces.
I think it's working really well.
Like the girl part, like the actual sport part has been,
like the really the nicest part of it so far,
figuring out everything else outside of that has been a little bit of a kind of trial and error.
And that's what is to be expected this first year trying to figure out
how that all works and like where are we going?
How is transporting and like all the,
all the communication that needs to play taste to make sure that everything runs smoothly.
We're still working on that, but it is so far so good.

The Badgers John Blackwell and Nick Boyd did the heavy lifting
in the 94-69 non-conference win over Southern Illinois Edwardsville.
Blackwell scored 24 and Boyd had 22 in the victory at home.
The visiting Cougars trailed by seven points at halftime,
but Wisconsin pulled away after that.
The Badgers remain unbeaten at 4-0.
The team embarked on a long road trip to Utah
to take on Brigham Young on Friday afternoon.
Coach Dregard talked about the team,
turning the turnovers they were able to accomplish
into points.
We're pretty well wired to play aggressive in transition,
so if we have that opportunity and we have an open floor,
you know, we're going to come pretty quickly at that,
and that's a great time to attack,
is when that offense, that was offense,
not quickly as to convert to defense,
and we can catch them in transition.
Coach Gard knows that the next game will be a difficult challenge.
Well, we're hands full, you know, we're going to,
but it's great for us.
We need it.
It's great opportunity in this time of year to play a game like that.
It's an exceptionally talented team,
quasi-road game,
but that's why you do this.
That's what these guys want,
these type of games and so do I.
So we're looking forward to Friday.
After jumping out to a first quarter lead,
the box lost their leading score and the game at Cleveland Monday night.

Yannis Ante de Cumpo went to the sidelines in the second period
after suffering a strained groin.
The team says he will undergo testing today.
Ryan Rollins led 7 Milwaukee players in double figures
by scoring 22,

They say running back,
Josh Jacobs knee injury is not bad enough to put him

Coach Matt LaFloris says,
Jacobs could play in this week's game against the Vikings.
Jacob suffered a contusion when he slammed into the turf,
just short of the goal line.
He left the game and did not return.
The floor shared the status for several other players,
saying quarterback Jordan Love has a sore shoulder,
but he is doing good.
Kicker Brandon McManus is day-to-day with a quad injury
and linebacker Quay Walker is dealing with a shoulder stinger as well.
Coach LaFlori talked about the potential of Jacobs
returning soon to the Packer lineup.
We can't really see where is that.
Each is a contusion.
So it's just more or less trying to get the swelling down.
And unfortunately, that's a pretty hard surface over there.
And sometimes the by-product of that.
The Dallas Cowboys have won their first game since the death of defensive end,
Marshawn Neeland.
Dak Prescott threw four touchdown passes in Monday night's 33-16 win
over the spiraling Las Vegas Raiders.
The 24-year-old Neeland was found dead November 6th
of an apparent suicide.
Coach Brian Shottenheimer and Cowboy players
wore shirts honoring Neeland and they bowed their heads during a moment of silence before the game.
The Cowboys then played one of their best games of the season
to keep alive their slim playoff hopes.
And finally in sports, former Brewer slugger Ryan Braun is among a dozen first-time candidates
for the baseball Hall of Fame.
Braun was the national MVP in 2011 and was named the All-Star Game lineup six times in his career.
He hit 296 with 352 home runs and 1154 runs batted in during 14 years in the majors.
Former outfielder Carlos Beltran is given the best chance to be chosen in the next vote.

It's kind of nice rivalry, nice coexistence.
They know each other and back and forth and all those kind of things like that.
And we play them a lot in the summer week.
So it's definitely one of those games that you really want just because of the rivalry that's behind it now.
I asked Riverdale coach Larry Swigham about the matchup with Ithaca Weston.
It's an unknown I guess for me.
I GSC Maxwell played her a couple times this summer.
Really, really talented athlete.
She often rebounds really well, scores in a lot of creative ways.
We've got to limit her.
I mean, she's the one known that really sticks out to me.
I know with them co-opping with Weston now.
That really, I mean, it's really unknown for me.
When we played them a few times this summer, I believe they had seven or eight Ithaca Girls in one Weston girl.
That's one of the hard things about these early season games when you don't have film.
And you have a newer roster there.
You know, I really don't know what to expect.
I know that they're well coached.
They won 15 games last year.
It seems like they're always doing the right thing.
So I'm sure it's going to be a fantastic game.

Mason Rudolph who filled in, capable in the second half of the Steelers win over Cincinnati would start for AFC North leading Pittsburgh when it faces the NFC North leading bears if Rodgers cannot.
The 41-year-old Rodgers, the oldest active player in the league, clutched the wrist when he was hit following a heave to the end zone.
