I'm Filney with a look at Southwestern Wisconsin sports, the WIA volleyball tournament continues
tonight.
Richland center gets its first taste of tournament action, hosting a tough Westby team,
Westby defeated Nikusa on Tuesday night.
Yesterday I talked with Richland center volleyball coach Jamie Johnson.
I think the last week was a microcosm of our season, very up and down.
We, for whatever reason, didn't match the energy that River Valley brought.
River Valley definitely had intentions of getting back at us for us being in their place.
They came in focused and motivated and I thought actually we played fairly well.
It's just we made our mistakes in bunches at, you know, the wrong time where we didn't
spread out our airs where you can kind of recover from that and it was like one player
just, you know, struggle a little bit, bam, bam, bam and all of a sudden before you
know it, that's enough separation and the side is over.
You know, but then on Thursday I thought we played very well.
We only missed two serves against Lancaster.
We cut down on our airs.
We had our second highest night in digs.
I thought we played very well there.
You know, again, we came into the season, end of the season very well, the second half
of the season.
I think we ended up 16 and 6, you know, that last stretch.
So that's, you know, built some definitely good confidence and momentum heading into
the tournament against Westby.
Yeah, with this match coming up here, you had a chance to watch them and scout them and
you know, does that give them an advantage having played one or how do you look at it?
Because you've had teams that you've had.
Yeah, I definitely think it does help in that case, the other team to get the tournament
jitters out of the way, you know, and you just never know how teams are going to respond
where they got to, you know, they had a feeling out process last night against, you know,
someone would say a weaker team based on the seeding.
You know, Westby is one of the higher ones, one of the first teams, one of the top teams
in our sectional that they had to play and so they had one of the bottom teams in the
sectional and you're able to have that feeling out process.
So I think that gives them a little bit of benefit, you know, right away.
Those first few points, I think, but after that, you know, it's a match, it's a match.
You know, there's definitely benefits to us and hey, we already got to the second round,
you know, which is nice.
Didn't have to face that stress.
We've had some injuries right now, so that definitely helped us.
Richland Center volleyball coach Jamie Johnson, his team hosting Westby and it should
be a good one tonight at the Richland Center high school field house.
We'll have it for you on FM 100.9 and we will also have that beginning with a pre-match
time around 635 Westby and Richland Center.
Landcaster will be at Mineral Point, River Valley host Bellville, Darlington at Cuba City
and Dodgeville is at Marshall division two action features Plattville at Edgewood.
In division four, it's a second match of the tournament for Riverdale.
They play at Brookwood Wisconsin Heights at Cashton.
River Ridge host Bangor and Iowa Grant at Phenomore and also in tonight's division five matchups.
Royal will host North Crawford, Hillsborough at DeSoto, Waniwak Center at Seneca and
Wazeka Stuban plays at Highland, WIA division five action in the other sectional sectional
four, our Gile host Benton, Potosi at Southwestern, Monticello at Peca Tonica and Belmont at
Shoalsburg.
The beginning of the WIA postseason for Sucker is tonight.
Richland Center opens up in La Crosse, here's Coach Tom Stadler of Richland Center.
We will be going to across the cleanest on October 23rd and I am pleased with that matchup.
I believe we can give them a good match, maybe move through the state tournament.
Richland Center in La Crosse, that's a four o'clock kickoff time for that one.
The Crosse at Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln against Adams friendship tonight in division four matchups.
River Valley will be hosting a team from Mayville tonight at seven o'clock under the lights
at Mueller pitch and Lodi will be playing Winnebago Lutheran in soccer tournament action.
From division three, West Salem will be at Mount Horubb, Monroe at Plantville Landcaster,
Murray Dushin, co-op team, playing at New Glarris, Ford Atkinson at Wisconsin Dells and
Dodgeville Mineral Point plays at Edgewood.
The WIA football playoffs get underway for 11 player teams tomorrow night, the River
Valley Black Hawks will be hosting Durand Arkansas.
I asked Tyler McLean, head coach of River Valley about last week's loss to Dodgeville
on the final night of the regular season.
I think we just got a little bit of a loss of focus.
I think there was a lot of external factors going around, the talks of the conference
championship stuff.
We also had our senior night, a lot of just different things that were going down that week.
I put a lot of that loss on myself a little bit, just a little bit of the fact of preparing
our guys to handle those external factors and those directions a little bit better.
Each day throughout practice, again, I think our focus was completely lost
that game.
Dodgeville was a good group, we've been kind of telling the kids all week, they were growing
and getting better each and every week, and they gave us their best look.
I give a lot of credit to the Dodgeville players and coaches for doing that.
For us, I think it's a good little kind of punch in the mouth a little bit to get back
to our basics and really focus on what made us a good team to get ready to go here for
the playoffs.
River Valley football coach Tyler McLean, his team at home against Durand Arkansas, among
a number of games involving Southwestern Wisconsin teams.
Tomorrow night, Richland Center will be at Stratford.
Also Ithaca will be at Wozika Stuban, taking on Wozika Seneca in the first round of the
playoffs.
Merchants league bowling last night, Cast and Tools had a 30-21 series, Kelly's Coffee,
27-78, AutoZone at 27-40, Cast and Tools at 10-96 and a 10-43, Phoenix Center 1 with
a 9-82.

bowling league.
The box put seven players in double figures while beating the Wizards in last night's
season opener, 133-120, Yanis Johnson, a Copo, children reporters earlier the week.
He and his teammates were dangerous and experts were wrong to dismiss them.
Yanis posted a double-double with 37 points and 14 rebounds.

I thought our ball movement and our defensive intensity and just the way we played in the
first half was terrific and then I actually thought we lost it in the second half.
We didn't go back to it.
I thought not having screwed out there was huge.
I think Ryan and Cole can do the job, but they wasn't expecting to do the job.
So it kind of threw them off.
I thought that threw us off a little bit.
