We begin our high school football preview with a look at the Richland Center home game against
Verrocua coming up tonight.
Here's Coach Andy Trunks, all talking about the visiting Black Hawks.
Well, I know they got a new coach this year.
I believe he was on staff in years past, but anytime you're a new coach, there's a lot.
There's a lot that kind of goes into that, you know, with your staff and your kids.
They're a young team.
They graduated quite a bit last year and they were three and six last year in the Cooley.
So, you know, we went up to their scrimmage and just tried to get some confirmation of
what we saw on film in years past.
And so, you're going to see a 4-4 out of them.
They've got some really, really big fellas in the trenches and they'll hit you.
And so, that's something that we got to be mindful of, you know, is not letting them
put their big bear claws on you.
But, you know, I think that with a 4-4 and what we saw with a 4-4 with Logan, you know,
we were able to find some things that worked.
I like our odds and I like our matchups.
I think our secondary, you know, is going to have a good day and I think our edges are
going to be really, really tough, you know, defensively.
So, overall, I think our, what we're bringing the table with our athletes, you know, and
just their performance over the summer, right?
Their commitment to offseason, strength and conditioning, they're hungry and they're
looking to really perform well.
Bristol Center football coach Andy Troxel, his team hosting Verrocua, love the game
tonight on FM 100.9 and wrco.com pregame time around 635.
Another key game in the area tonight, a non-conference battle with Riverdale visiting
Ithaca.
I spoke with Riverdale coach Jeff Johnson this week.
Our junior group is really strong.
Most of them got a lot of playing time last year, sophomores.
We have tremendous senior leadership, Brody Meath, he's returning as an all-conference
player.
He's a throwback and linebacker and we have a couple of the seniors that are really doing
a nice job.
You face Ithaca on Friday night, what stands out about them in the scouting report?
They have pretty good reputation, you know, they're, they're over the years, how many times
have they been conference title or in the playoffs, they have a really good program.
I remember coaching against Dan Rice way, way, way back before he retired and I told
him when I knew he was retiring, I said, you know, Dan, every time we come up here, we
know it's going to be a clean game and it's going to be a really, really hard game.
They always have a good program.
Who do you look at as Riverdale's leaders or do you name captains to this point in the
season, Jeff?
We did have captains vote last week and our two of our seniors, Brody Meath and Carter
Dagen Hart and Junior Bevan Dennis, where he elected captains and then each week will,
they will elect an honorary captain and this week's honorary captain is Colin Walsh's
honorary captain this week.
We have a really good quarterback with Owen, Blankenship, Ethan Kagel's kind of anchoring
one side of our, the other side of our line.
Those are our leaders.
Riverdale football coach Jeff Johnson.
As opponents tonight, the Ithaca Bulldogs and they are co-head coached by David Clay.
With Riverdale, they have a lot of their players coming back and it's one of those things
being the first game of the year.
You don't have a lot of film on them.
You don't really know a ton about them.
We know they might be doing some different things and it's kind of hard to judge that
off of the limited film and stuff we have, but they do have a lot of returning players,
a lot of nice like backs and quarterback back and so there's going to be some familiarity
there just being that they've been in the system for a while that brings some potential
problems.
Certainly he lost a lot to graduation, but you have a quarterback back this year, don't
you?
Yeah.
We have our quarterback Keegan back and that's nice.
It'd be his third year in the starting role and so it's going to be really helpful and
we can lean on him plus we have a lot of our returning line, which also helps in just
having that type of leadership both on the line and with your quarterback back even
though you might not have your backs and receivers back.
That's kind of a huge couple of pieces to have and get that kind of momentum and ball
rolling in the direction we need.
It's like a co-head coach David Clayng his team hosting Riverdale this evening.
