I am Phil Ney with sports while the high school football season begins for several area teams
as early as tomorrow night.
One of those River Valley Tyler McLean takes over his head coach this year and ask him
about how it's gone so far for the River Valley Black Hawk football team.
I would say the first thing that I'm really impressed with is kind of the unity of the
team.
We do have a very strong group of seniors.
We're sitting about 20 right now being kind of a new coach and kind of hopefully like
a new gene here that we have going on.
That's a lot out of that group, a lot of change as well and they've been the guys kind of
the forefront of this change, you know, they've even had their ups and downs as well up.
They've all stayed the course very well and maintain their leadership all the way through
and through some.
With your scrimmage last Friday night, what stood out for you?
I guess maybe some things that look good and some things you have to work on.
Yeah, I mean, I do, I did like our offensive play, offensive line play for sure, you know,
we definitely had some guys that we graduated seniors last year that we need to fill some
holes.
But I've been very excited with this group up front, you know, I believe in all football
games are one of the trenches.
So I'm putting a lot on there guys as plates there, how they took it on, a couple of
MAs, a couple of assignments and all that stuff.
But I thought our technique and everything like that and they will end to hit, finally
get to see a different team besides your own, it was nice to see especially up front
offensively.
Again, that offensive line, I'd like to shout out there, that was a good look for us
on.
River Valley football coach Tyler McLean, his team will be at Evansville on Thursday night
for a seven o'clock kickoff as they began the nine game regular season.
The mission wrapped up a perfect season, winning the Richland Center Church League softball
tournament championship game, 12, three over nights of Columbus last night.
The mission was led by Andrew Thompson and Adam Windsor, who are both three for four.
Windsor at four RBI's.
While fish senior was two for three, Jim Luxton was the winning pitcher as he struck out
four.
The mission set the tone early when they scored six runs in the opening inning.
Jamie Johnson of the mission talked about his veteran pitcher Jim Luxton and the defense
the team has.
He's pretty automatic.
He trusts his defense behind him and you know, he'll help throw strikes, you know, sometimes
you know, we joke about him, he's too nice at times.
But he'll get it up when he needs to, you know, get it high in the air and challenge those
hitters.
But we didn't, we have a solid defense out there behind him.
And just a couple of weeks ago, it was fun to watch it came home to show it's right.
So that was just a crazy game.
There was multiple double play balls that, you know, you don't normally see a lot of
double play balls in church league, but they were clean, you know, heart hip balls that,
you know, flip to the second, made the turn and it was kind of fun seeing that as an intense
game.
And so he knows the trust is defense, but, you know, we've been fortunate.
We've been able to get out and get some runs, get some runs bunch together to get to an
early lead and then just kind of play from there.
That's all the team won it last night.
The KC scored three runs in the fourth inning.
Josh Kepler and Caleb Frawley were both two for three.
Caleb suffered the pitching loss for the Knights as they finished the runner up in the tournament
after a strong run in the post season coming back through the consolation bracket prior
to the game.
We talked to Grant Worthington of the KCs about that.
This time of year, it's tough.
You have college kids.
You have sports practices starting, so it actually, we had to play twice a couple of nights,
but I worked out for us.
It's been fun all along and it's kind of the same for all the teams, but it's been a lot
of fun.
Before the game, Grant talked about getting a chance to play in that final game.
Beautiful night for softball.
It's been a great year.
We have some young teams just great, great to have people come out, something for people
to come watch, people to fellowship, and get people together besides them some days.
Something to do is be promoting God, you know, just a great thing for the community.
With the 12-3 win last night, the mission swept the regular season and then won four straight
games to lock up the 2025 Church League Tournament Championship.
At quail run last night, it was week 18 of the 20-week schedule and there were some good
scores.
There were five players that shot 39s, Neil Mahoney, Pat Keegan, Brandon Miller,
Jarrett McDonald, and Andrew Nittka, Neil Burdyd Hole 1 and 7, Pat Keegan had a
Burdyd Hole 8, Jarrett McDonald Burdyd Hole 1.
There were 41s last night for Aaron Halverson, Brett Montrey, along with Jim Cateravik, Joe
Halverson, and Chris Pardoon.
With a Burdyd Hole 1, Brent with a Burdyd Hole 6, Joe Halverson, Burdyd Hole 9, and Chris
Pardoon enjoyed a Burdyd Hole 3.
Other golfers with holes played under par, Anthony Ludwig, Burdyd Hole 1, Jeremy Wilson,
Burdyd Hole 1, a Burdyd Hole 3 for Steve Davis, and Tony Dirty, Burdyd Hole 8.

closest to the pin on hole 3, Neil Mahoney, the longest putt on hole 4, Brent Montrey,

Congratulations to Team 2 winners of the second half, members of Team 2 are Joe Halverson,
Rich Baroncott, Nate Raish, and Ed Finck.
They will go on to meet the members of Team 4 for the league championship playoff coming
up next week.
The All-Star bowling league will have a preseason meeting coming up tonight at 630 at the

season.
Plan to attend and bring your teammates.

in a league, please stop into the Phoenix Center or call 608-604-2618.
The breweries got swept by the cubs in a Tuesday double header.
Christianie Lich, homeward from Milwaukee, and Sal Freelich had two hits and two RBI's,
but it wasn't enough as the crew dropped the first game of the double header 6-4 to Chicago.
The bats were less effective in game two as the cubs beat the brewers 4-1.
Andrew Vaughn's first inning RBI single accounted for Milwaukee's only run.
Milwaukee right-hander Brandon Woodruff permitted three runs and five hits in four and a third
innings in his eighth start of the season.
Manager Pat Murphy talked about Brandon Woodruff who didn't get any breaks last night.
I think it was a good experience for him to go out there and have to grind and lead off
walks.
He usually does, but he had two lead-off walks.
One of them ended up hurting us.
We had a couple of things go against him.
We didn't catch the ball on a caught stealing.
We had a blooper fall in down the left field line.
We had a ball hit right on the line on the right field line, so he had to battle.
Murphy says the offense was doing his job.
I thought we did some good things.
I thought, I mean, there's guys with three and four, Vaughn hit the ball hard three
times.
Collins hit the ball hard twice.
Got nothing.
So the brewer is with a couple of losses in a row.
Now I have a two game losing streak.
They will play again tonight.
It's a five minutes after seven first pitch time on WRC, FM 107.7 and AM 1450.
Also in baseball news, it was the match getting a win against Washington 8.1.
The Cardinals 7, Miami 4, Dodgers 11, Colorado 4, San Diego 5, 1 over San Francisco.
In the American League, Detroit 1, Houston nothing, Kansas City 5, Texas 2, Athletics 6,
Minnesota 3, Yankees 13, 3 over Tampa Bay, Baltimore 4 and Boston 3.
And an Inter League play, Philadelphia 6, 4 over Seattle, Toronto 7, Pittsburgh 3, Atlanta
11, 10 over the White Sox.
Cincinnati 6, the Angels 4, Arizona 6, 5 against Cleveland.
And the Packers, Rookie 4th round pick, Baron Sarl will miss some time before the season.
The rookie defensive lineman has been diagnosed with an MCL sprain, but the team hopes he'll
be able to stay off the injured list with the way the NFL's cut down rules work.
The Packers will be able to place two players on the injured reserve list at the cut down
deadline with the designated to return status.
In other injury news, quarterback Jordan Love will be limited in Green Bay's joint practice
with the Seahawks on Thursday.
I am Phil Ney with an update on sports.
