WRCO Sports · Thu Jul 24, 2025

It's time for a morning update on sports here from Richland Center.

First of all, Knight League home talent baseball schedule this evening.

Ridgeway at Hollendale, Sholesburg, Benton is playing at Pinebluff Mount Horob,

Dodgeville at Readsburg, Black Earth at Rio, and Arena at Wisconsin Dells.

I spoke with Arena manager Nick Larson yesterday about arena's chances in the Knight League.

We've kind of been in the middle of road with the Knight League.

We actually got a big game coming up tomorrow night.

We go to the Dells.

If we're doing our math right, we win tomorrow night.

We should get a chance to be in the Thursday night playoff.

So that's been kind of fun.

Had some tough games early with May's own sock.

They're always tough, but we're looking to make the Thursday night playoff too,

but obviously it's Sunday's the big event that we're really playing for,

but take one game at a time and see what happens.

That big game he's talking about is the Hollendale at Arena Games, Sunday League action,

Arena hosting a Sunday League home talent playoff game for the first time in its franchise history.

While the Simon Shark swim team closed out the regular season at home last night against

the basketball stingrays, the shark swam to a first place finish 529 points over

basketball's 497. It's a team that has made up of a lot of young swimmers this year.

I talked to coach Chad Hying about that.

We have a very large eight and under section this year, which is really fantastic.

It's retaining him. That's the trick.

So hopefully we can keep him having fun and keep him having a great time and learning how to

swim even better and keep him coming as a year's progress.

I know we do have some graduating this year.

Swimmers earning individual first place finishes last night include in the short free

Emory Kalman Morgan Worthington, Ronan Ringelsteader, Mercy Fretz, Cameron Keane and Grace Fretz.

In the backstroke, Joel Fretz, Luke Fretz, Cameron Keane, Braden Burns, and Grace Fretz,

all earning first place, earning first place in Butterfly where Brooklyn Worthington,

Emory Kalman, Levi Fretz, Clancy Hying, Cameron Keane, Grace Fretz, and Connor Hying.

Swimmers who won their age group for distance relay include Harper Adler, Ronan Ringelsteader,

Mercy Fretz, and Will Harpen, earning first place in breaststroke,

was Emory Kalman, Ronan Ringelsteader, Clancy Hying, and Connor Hying.

Swimmers who won the individual medley were Lauren Chambers, Clancy Hying, and Haley Kahoot.

The sharks also had nine relays that earned first place finishes.

WRCO had a chance to speak with some of the swimmers.

Last night, including Haley Kahoot, who is back swimming with the sharks after an eight-year hiatus.

I was working at Grabacone one day, and Coach Worthington came in, and she had a Simon shark shirt.

And I was like, do they still do swim team? I did that when I was really little, and I was wondering,

like, this summer, why not? And as we'll go back.

So that is awesome. So how has it been? Is it like riding a bike? Did you know what you were doing?

So it's really challenging seeing yourself be really slow compared to everyone else.

But the best part is watching yourself improve. I just beat my personal best by like seven seconds,

and it's really cool seeing all the little baby steps fall into place.

Connor Hying is one of the veteran swimmers on the sharks team who now juggles work with swimming.

Yeah, so I woke up pretty early. I had to wake up before 30 and commute to Madison,

and then I'll make it back here just in time for the meet. Made it a little late today,

so, but still made it back in time for my events.

Another of the team's leaders, Leah Chambers, is also coaching.

Well, it's been really exciting because I actually got to be a coach this year.

So I haven't had much time like actually practicing in the pool, but it's okay. I get to help out with like

really young kids like the eight and unders, so that's been really fun.

And watching them grow from just being able to go halfway across the pool,

to doing a full length, and now maybe doing a 50-long distance, which is so exciting.

I'm so proud of them. And it's so exciting too, because then when I'm racing,

I see them down at the other end cheering for me. It's just been so wonderful this summer

getting to see perspectives from a racer standpoint and also a coach standpoint.

I think I've just had a lot more fun this year, seeing like how my kids are growing,

and me personally growing and seeing them watching me. It's just been so wonderful.

Coach Chad Hying talked about the sharks next meet.

A conference is coming up this Saturday, and that's going to be in prayer to sheen.

Prayer to sheen has been a small team in the past, and has not been able to host conference,

so it's really exciting to be able to be over there at their pool, at their facility.

They have a wonderful facility with a great viewing area for all parents,

so it's really nice to be able to do that. We had invite there last year, and we have

conference there this year. Good luck to the sharks as they get ready for conference.

Mineral points, Delia Collins placed Afe in the recent Junior Girls freestyle nationals wrestling

tournament. That finish was good enough for Delia to be named to the All-American team.

For a second time in a wrestling career, the tournament was held in Fargo, North Dakota,

earlier in July. Wisconsin had 13 young women receive all American recognition.

As far as the next level then, the 2025 U.S. Marine Corps and Junior Nationals

were held at the Fargo Dome in Fargo, North Dakota, July 10th through the 19th,

with competition in men's Greco-Roman and women's freestyle as well.

The Brewers claim the series and move back into sole possession of that place

in the Central Division with a 10-2 victory in Seattle Wednesday.

The Mariners had ended Milwaukee's 11-game winning streak the night before.

Bryce Tarang drove in three runs and starter Quinn Priester shut down the home team

on two runs in seven innings to get the win.

Seattle scored just three runs in the three-game series. After an open date today,

the Brewers return home to host the Marlins, Friday with Freddie Peralta getting the start.

Helping out the Brewers' cause, the Cubs lost to the Kansas City Royals yesterday,

and that final score was 8-4. Pittsburgh 6-1 over Detroit, the Met 6 and the Angels 3.

Houston 4-3 over Arizona, Dodgers 4, Minnesota 3, Boston Beach, Philadelphia 9-8.

In the American League, Cleveland 3, Baltimore 2, Toronto 8-4 over the Yankees, Texas 2,

the Athletics 1, White Sox 11, and Tampa Bay 9. From the National League since an 85-nothing

over Washington, Miami 3-2 over San Diego, San Francisco 9, Atlanta 3, and Colorado beat the

Cardinals 6-0. Packers' profits from operations were up more than 39% in the last fiscal year.

WFRV-TV reports the numbers were driven by the record payout of more than $432 million

from the NFL in National Revenue. The situation was unveiled yesterday on the first day of training

camp. Total revenue was up almost 10% to just over 719 million. The bottom line was helped by the

Packers hosting a ninth home game in 2024. Badgers coach Luke Fickles as he and his team are

embracing the challenge of one of the toughest schedules in the country. Sports illustrated reports

that Fickles said we understand what being a part of the Big 10 is. His comments came during

Big 10 media days. Fickles tells reporters to be the best. You've got to beat the best.

He says the situation presents what he calls an unbelievable opportunity.

And a 12-year-old little eager is distraught at the prospect of missing his team's first

eight tournament game because he was suspended for flipping his bat after hitting a game-winning

home run. But his father says little league baseball promotes bat flipping celebrations on its

social media accounts that don't result in punishment. Now Marco Rocco's family has gone to court

to seek an emergency temporary restraining order that will allow him to play in the New Jersey

State tournament that starts today. I am Phil Me. That's an update on sports.
