I am Phil Ne, the Richland Center soccer team claimed a WIA regional championship with

a 5-4-8 inning win over Dodgeville.

The game at Dodgeville saw a total of three home runs and some clutch plays down the

stretch.

Hornet Freshman pitcher Kyrie Fisher struck out nine and gave up six hits.

Senior Carly Meaden and Fisher were both two for three with a walk.

Freshman JC Gander hit a two-run home run in the first inning for the Hornets.

For Dodgeville, Kayla Brahm had a two-run home run in the first and Tommy Krubaugh had

a lead-off solo shot in the fourth.

Avalor had suffered the pitching loss after working eight innings.

The game ended with a bit of controversy.

The umpire crew advised both head coaches before the game that if the game went to extra

innings, they were to use ghost runners.

A runner would be placed at second base to start each inning.

Both coaches agreed to this format.

The Hornets JC Gander scored on a throwing error and Dodgeville stranded runners at second

and third in their half of the eighth and the game ended.

The Hornets were presented with a regional plaque.

Late last night, Dodgeville athletic director Joey Martin made an official protest of the

game to the WIAA because of the use of ghost runners, which is evidently not a practice

which is to be used in WIAA tournament games.

Nonetheless, the Hornets were planning on a trip to Prairie Dushin on Tuesday for a

WIAA sectional semi-final.

Following the game, I asked Coach Jamie Gander about the question of ghost runners.

It was talked about before the game and we were told that it was, yeah, that's the way

it was.

I'm not sure.

Being as new as I am at this, we rolled with it.

I asked why we didn't do that two day night and they said it was the rule.

So, you know, we did agree to that.

We were told that was what had to happen, but regardless of he played it out that way

and then she worked out.

And the team persevered.

These girls, since day one, have never gave up and the night just threw us, you know,

we could have easily, when they got us down there on the middle of the game, acted off

and decided to go home.

And they just, even earlier in the year when we were losing these games, you know, they

just kept battling.

You could see what's going to happen.

I've been telling everybody we're a good team, you know, and, uh, former coach from

Richland Center told me, like night, he said, when you can start winning games like

that, you're very dangerous.

And I think we're, we're getting there.

Former senior Carly Maiden says it's all about fun.

That's kind of how our team works.

Like, we're very light-hearted and we joke around and anything that keeps our, like,

emotions up, I guess, that's us, like, we're always joking around.

And senior Chloe Darling says the team has worked on.

Definitely.

We put in a lot of work.

We just told us they're like, you guys, we're not the same team that you were the first

time we played them.

And it definitely, we definitely work.

We have, we've come so far and I'm so proud of the whole team.

Everybody's played their role and it's been awesome.

Freshman pitcher Kyrie Fisher talked to us after the game about the win.

Yes, I should remember to take a deep breath and I have a great team that's supporting me

all the way through some strikeouts there in the inning.

And I think it almost looks like you've gained a little bit of fire as the game went on.

Did it feel like you had this pretty good velocity there in the eighth inning?

Yeah, maybe I was more focused, I guess.

It was a super tight game and I was like, my team really needs this.
