High School Baseball: Platteville at Richland Center

WRCO Sports · Thu May 22, 2025

Today, the Southwest Conference meet will be held at Dodgeville.

It was postponed on Tuesday.

High school track teams from the Southwest Conference will all be in Dodgeville this afternoon

for the meet.

Earlier, I talked to Richland Center head track coach Laura Ewing about this season as they

get set to taper down toward the postseason.

We have conference, which is going to be in Dodgeville, so that will determine first

team all conference in all of the events and relays and of course team.

And then after that, we have regionals, which is the start of our competition.

So, regionals is May 27th in Plattville, and that determines who moves on to sectionals,

which is May 30th, and then state, of course, which is June 5th and 6th.

So we're really looking forward to seeing, pushing as many people we can to sectionals

in state, and I think we got a really good shot at a ton of people on relays making

at this year.

What do you plan to do this time of year, you know, getting into the postseason?

Do you do some tapering things?

Or what do you do in practice these days?

Well, in practice, it kind of depends on, you know, post meet, pre-meat.

We try not to do a ton of really crazy hard workouts or anything like that.

But we're really, for relays, we're really focusing on just getting the handoff perfect

so that we can shave as much time off as we can on each of our relays.

So that takes up a lot of time because it is just, you have to get it down to a tee to

make sure that you're not, you're including, you have to get it down to a tee to make

sure that you're shaving off as much time as possible and not wasting any time and delays.

We're really kneeling down on our field events and then kind of working on a form and

just reminding ourselves of correct running form and getting some sprints in there too.

And our distance, of course, working on endurance.

We don't necessarily, we kind of taper off a little bit mostly only because our meets

are such an in such close succession that we don't want to do any hardware endurance

workouts the day before we meet so we're sore for competition.

What about highlights for the years, a team, any meets or anything like that, where you

thought you were running in all cylinders?

Well, this year, unfortunately we have had a lot of injuries and not a lot of big injuries

or anything, but just some, you know, spring ankles, pulled muscles where we're not able

to put everyone and, of course, one person not being able to compete in meet, especially

with a relays, doesn't, I feel like we just haven't been at full strength all year long.

But it's just really unfortunate, but that's okay because again, what we're gearing

our season for is, I've been telling them all season long that conference and regional

shows.

Those are our biggest needs.

We've been gearing our season towards that, so I'd rather make sure that everyone is

rusted and healthy for those so we can end the season with a bang and just getting as many

kids as we can to sexual and state.

Richlands, our head track coach, Laura Ewing, good luck to all of the teams headed toward

Dodgeville today, action will get underway with the field events at 4, 430 running events.

It's been pushed back because of a middle school track meet which will also be hosted at the

Richland Center sports complex with a publication of May's WIA Bulletin new rules governing name

image likeness opportunities are now active for student athletes in Wisconsin.

The new rules note several ways in which deals must be executed in order to preserve amateur

eligibility and I L appearances can involve any school conference or WIA mentions uniforms

or logos that's one key difference from NCAA rules another difference is that high school

students can endorse products that are age inappropriate such as tobacco alcohol gambling

firearms or adult entertainment to name a few high school students also can have an agent or other

professional representation make their deals and anyone associated with a school program can't

act as a facilitator for deals that's a big departure from the NCAA rules that allow for

agent representation. One major component of the new rule is the clause that people associated

with the school can't contribute to the N I L deals. The Baltimore Orioles were finally able to

Phil Needy has a look at a spring sports contest coming up tonight.

First in center we'll take on Plattville tonight in area baseball.

We'll have a call for you on FM 100.9 and wrco.com.

I asked head coach Ryan Lemke about his team's season.

Our offense has kind of cooled off a little bit, but we've had a lot of a couple good days

of hitting last two nights, so looking to get back, going offensively, our pitching

has continued to be dominant, really good throughout the season, so we look for that

to continue and couple that with hitting and then we can, if we roll at the same time

both those things, we can play with anybody in the state.

Here in that game tonight on WRCO, beginning with a pre-game time sponsored by the testing

power sports at 645 and then the game live from North Park.

I'm Phil Needy for WRCO Sports.

Baltimore Orioles were finally able to end an eight game losing streak yesterday afternoon

by beating the Brewers eight to four in 11 innings.

Milwaukee had tied the game in the bottom of the ninth on Caleb Durbin's two out single

then match single runs with the visitors in the in the tenth.

Catcher Adley Rochman, three Brent Homer was a big blow in the 11th when the Orioles scored

four times.

The Brewers took the series two games to one and traveled to Pittsburgh tonight as they

will be playing the Pirates in a four game series.

First picture tonight's contest will be at 540 and you'll be able to hear the broadcast

of that game on WRCE 107.7 and a M1450, the pre-game is currently underway.

Former Major League player Darren Ruff is suing the Cincinnati Reds for damages after

he suffered a career ending injury crashing into an uncovered tarp roller while chasing

a fall pop at Great American Ballpark two years ago.

The lawsuit filed today in the Hamilton County Court of Common Please charges the reds with

negligence in failing to maintain safe field conditions and specifically cites the presence

of the unpadded metal tarp roller.

Ruff was playing for space for the Milwaukee Brewers when he was injured in June of 2023.

An effort to ban the so-called Tush push fell two votes short yesterday.

Reports from the league office in New York City indicates that the NFL had asked the

Packers to propose to ban a league source tells the athletic dot com green based front office

personnel don't care about the play positively or negatively.

One of the main reasons given for taking the rule back to 2005 was the threat of injuries.

That wasn't enough to convince the owners rules committee.

The Packers and Bucks are part of a group asking the legislature to increase funding for

the University Wisconsin system. The journal Sentinel reports that a letter to lawmakers was

signed by 800 businesses and organizations. 43 states fund their four year university systems

at a higher rate. Some Republican lawmakers say the request for $855 million dollars increase

is too high. The University Wisconsin reports the 2026 football opener has been pushed back

one day. The Badgers will take on Notre Dame at Lambo Field on Sunday, September 6th.

The non-conference contest has been originally scheduled for the day before.

Our previous game against the fighting Irish had appeared on the UW schedule for October 3, 2020,

but it was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The two teams met at Soldier Field in Chicago in 2021.

And the college football player off will go to a more straightforward way of filling the bracket

next season. The CFP will place teams strictly on where they are ranked instead of moving

pieces around to reward conference champions. The new format was widely expected after

less seasons. Jumbled bracket gave bice to Big 12 champion Arizona state and Mountain West

champion Boise state, even though those teams were ranked 9th and 12th by the playoff selection

committee. WRCO Sports has been sponsored by Lakes Gas Company taking care of your LP needs,
