I'm Filney with sports at the state boys basketball tournament over the weekend.
There were five champions crowned.
Cochrane Fountain City was a winner 60 to 54 over Shaboygan Lutheran,
taking division four Aquinas with a lopsided 74 45 victory against Bonduel.
The rest were all close.
Division three won by Milwaukee Academy of Science.
57 54 over freedom in the division two final.
Wawatosa West Edge Racine Park 60 to 57 and Wisconsin Lutheran was a winner over
Marshfield 57 55 to take division one from the winter sports transitioning into spring sports.
We saw that over the weekend with several inside track meets that were held.
Richland Center was a part of the Moss and Golden Eagle invite at UW lacrosse held on Saturday
afternoon and evening.
Hornet Boys team finished eighth and the Hornet girls were fifth.
Holman was the top team in both boys and girls' activities.
Here's a look at how a few of the individuals fared for Richland Center.
The girls 800 meter final.
Grace Frentz finished eighth for the Hornets.
Also the four by four final saw Richland Center finish seventh.
Lacey Aball Addy Lawless along with Riley Banker and Charlie Bailey.
Ran that for the Hornets.
It was Danica Paul's finishing tenth in the high jump and first in the pole vault with a nine
nine.
So Lay Ewing was second in the long jump final as well on the end or at UW lacrosse and
Madeline Huber finished second in the shot put throw.
Looking at the boys results the four by four finished fourth for Richland Center Grace and
Banker Mason Joleneck Fletcher Harper and Robert Budden ran that for the Hornets.
Robert Budden was seventh in the 800 and also the 3200 saw Ryan Stadler finish seventh place
for Richland Center and in the four by two co-ed it was a fourth place finish for the Richland
Center co-ed team of Lacey Aball Mason Joleneck Charlie Bailey and Fletcher Harper.
Cashden hosted a meet earlier in the day at UW lacrosse and Bangor was the top
women's team followed by Westby kickable Farge took third.
Cochran Fountain City was fourth.
Codot was fifth.
Boschabell was ninth and DeSoto eleventh.
Riverdale 14th for the girls teams out of the 22nd to 22 teams that were involved
and for the boys team Edgar was the top team followed by Luther.
Kickable the Farge was third.
Arcadia fourth.
Brookwood fifth.
DeSoto seventh.
North Crawford eighth.
Boschabell and North Crawford actually tied for eighth and Westby was tenth
among the 21 schools that were involved.
Looking at how Ithaca Weston fared on the day it was the four by eight relay team finishing
sixth.
That was Brace and Garcia Bowlin.

Sam Jones and Clayton Lee.
The four by two was 12th for the girls.
Maggie Kirschner.
Bailey Wannlis.
Holly King and Faith Stinichka.
The four by two was 14th.

The 1600 run Clayton Lee finished fourth.
Brace and Garcia Bowlin was 16th in the 400.
A 10th place finish for Sam Jones with a personal best in the 200.
Baltazar Keiser was 19th in the pole vault.
Carrick Thompson was 11th.
The triple jump Hunter Mo finish 17th.
Deakin McDonough was 23rd in shot put and Channing Wheaton 26th.
In other action, Holly King in the shot put was 11th and Faith Stinichka 24th
and Clayton Lee finished 9th in the 800 run for the Ithaca Weston track teams.
Elsewhere on the state scene, the Wisconsin Badgers beat Ohio State
for three and overtime to win the national championship
at the frozen four hockey tournament in Minneapolis last night.
The Badgers, Kristen Sims scored two goals.
One on a penalty shot with just 18 seconds left to send it into overtime
and the winning goal in overtime.
This is the eighth time the Badger women have won a national title
under head coach Mark Johnson.
There will be a rally tonight at 630 to celebrate with coach Johnson of the team
at LeBon Arena 105 East Campus Mall in Madison.
Also over the weekend, lots of bright spots to make the weekend even sweeter.
Captain Casey O'Brien was named the winner of the Paddy Casmire award on Saturday.
It goes to the best player in women's college hockey.
Well, Wisconsin closed its Saturday game against a BYU on an 11-2 run,
but a missed shot at the buzzer end of the team's season.
The Cougars led most of the way in a 91-89 decision.
John Tanjay set a program record for an NCAA tournament game with 37 points.
John Blackwell had 21 Wisconsin's final record of 27 and 10 is its best in eighth seasons.
Coach Greg Gard focused on the team after the loss.
Obviously the flurry and the heart and
complete grit that we showed to make a comeback like that and have a chance.
In the last possession is a credit to the young men I've got in the locker room and
I've been doing this a long time almost 35 years and as I told them watching them grow together
from the time we got together in June to now may have been the most fun enjoyable year in my career.
Coach Gard says they proved many wrong.
We were highly doubted early. We weren't even supposed to be in this tournament.
It's supposed to be finished in 12th in the big 10 maybe.
And this group just bought in and committed to each other and we're so much fun to be around
every single day and so much fun to coach and the joy that they played with and how they
bonded together is really, really special.
There were some highlights on Sunday from the NCAA tournament.
Derek Queen banked in a fade away jumper at the buzzer and Maryland advanced to the sweet 16
in a thriller beating Colorado State 72 71 in the second round of the NCAA tournament.
Dan Hurley's emotions ran the gamut following the team's 77 75 loss to Florida in the second
round which ended Yukon's bid for a third straight national championship.
The box will be seeking their third straight win when they play the sons in Phoenix tonight.
Yannis out to the cupos scored 32 points and added 17 rebounds in Saturdays 114-108 win at Sacramento.
Milwaukee a trail by 14 points in the third period before taking control of the game.
Both teams played shorthanded the sons expect to benefit tonight from the return of three rotation
players who have been sidelined with injuries. The Brewers were winners six nothing over Colorado
yesterday and the other squad of Brewers lost a Seattle final score of 10-6. The Monday schedule
as the Brewers playing Colorado, the next Brewer broadcast will be Thursday and that will be the
real deal when Milwaukee opens the Major League Baseball season against the New York Yankees and
transfer quarterback Billy Edwards gets mostly positive reviews for his performance in the first
workouts during Badger Spring practices. There are several new faces on hand for Bucky. More than
two dozen players left through the transfer portal and nearly that many have come to Madison the
same way. Edwards talents are said to be closely aligned with the team's offensive game plan
under coordinator Jeff Grimes Wisconsin struggled through a second straight subpar campaign in 2024
