The state girls volleyball tournament got underway yesterday with Division 5 winners
being Columbus Catholic and Eau Claire Emanuel Lutheran, both won in four sets to advance
to Saturday's Division 5 final.
And for the middle point pointers, their season came to an end after a hard fought loss to
Regis.
They fell 15-12 in the fifth set.
Regis will play Manitouac Lutheran on Saturday for the Division 4 championship.
Division 1 girls volleyball last night, the winners included Hamilton, Minamini Falls,
McGwantigo and Devine Savior Holy Angels who defeated Holman in three sets last evening.
Matches get underway this morning in fact, Aquinas is playing Bondoel and Baron against
Lake Country Lutheran at this hour.
Yesterday at the state boys, soccer tournament, Shoreland Lutheran defeated Aquinas, one nothing
and Lake Country Lutheran was a 3-1 winner over Kiel.
It's the third level of the WIA football playoffs tonight.

Travis, let's start out and take a look at that eight-player game tonight, which is a semi-final.
Four teams left an eight-player, all outstanding teams, of course, Highland in our area still
going strong.
They've got a tough one against Owen Witte tonight, the top-ranked team in the final eight-player
coach's pool on Wizports.net.
No matter what, it's been a heck of a ride for Highland.
First year, obviously, moving over from 11-player to eight-player.
You never know how that's going to go.
We've seen some teams that have transitioned very well.
We've seen some teams that you thought would move over and do pretty well.
They haven't, so a good showing by Highland, a good representation of Southwest Wisconsin.
I know that they were a little bummed.
They have to travel a little bit more for this game, but at the state semi-final level where
this one is at, you're not always going to get a game real close to you.
They've got a tough one against Owen Witte.
The other side is Northwood, Salt and Springs against Linus St. Thomas Aquinas.
Really good games this weekend and looking forward to a great eight-player state championship
game next weekend in Wisconsin.
Hopefully, we'll be represented by Southwest Wisconsin and Highland.
11-player football tonight.
You got to rematch of River Ridge and Potosi Castville.
How do you see that game?
Well, hopefully, it's a good one just like last time.
Last time, Potosi Castville won 20-18.
Good game. River Ridge is one of the lower-seated teams still going.
They were a five-seed, but I actually expected them to get to this point.
They had a pretty favorable draw, getting a couple of those scenic bluff teams.
They'd be touched, and then last week,
shut out top-seated Bangor, of course.
I think everybody agrees that Potosi Castville probably should have been the top-seed
in this group, but either way, I think it got to the same point,
the same match-ups that we could have seen anyway.
Potosi Castville, though, they're coming off a pretty dominated win over
Cockerball City.
One of the several match-ups, I mean, the VP is getting the playoffs.
You don't generally expect you're going to get rematches from a regular season game, but
there are a few this weekend, and this is one of them.
Who do you see as the favorite there in that division?
Seven of the team's team still going.
Well, I still think Edgar is the favorite.
They're the defending state champion.
They haven't a lot of point in the playoffs yet.
Just a dominating program there under Jerry Sins.
I really like Potosi Castville.
I picked them to get to the state championship game and fall to Edgar.
But I just like Edgar and what they can do.
You know, they're such a machine and really operate in so many ways on a level that,
you know, you don't see it at division seven in terms of the sides of the roster,
the sides of the players, just the way they go about things.
It's not what you normally see in division seven.
Moving to division six, Sabaat Lancaster and Bellville Travis.
Yeah, you know, interesting last week Lancaster,
knocked off Cuba City.
There was a lot of consternation from from the Cubans.
After the seeds and the playoffs came out that they got a three seed after
beating Lancaster during the regular season.
But as we saw with Ithaca, some injury issues for, excuse me, for Cuba City.
Their quarterback Tyson Richard was out with injuries suffered in the previous game.
So, Cuba City not quite able to continue on,
but Lancaster does continue to carry and fly the FWC flag.
It's an SWC swall matchup.
You know, good to see some of those.
And Bellville, Bellville really is the Cinderella of the playoffs so far.
They're an eight seed, but played a really difficult schedule,
both in conference and out of conference.
Prepared them well for the playoffs.
And they took advantage of a couple teams out of the Eastern suburban conference.
So far, cops seated and preview stand defeated Cambridge.
And then last week, Marshall.
Now it's going to be a little bit tougher for for the Wildcats.
There's a lot of common opponents between these two teams.
I think there's three common opponents.
Bellville lost all three.
Lancaster beat all three.
That doesn't tell us everything.
It's not to be all end all, but you know,
put a good chance for Lancaster to continue on and fly that FWC flag.
Prior to machine hosting Milwaukee Academy of Science,
is this have potential to be one of the big games this weekend?
I think it could be one of the more exciting games for sure.
Both these teams are pretty high scoring.
Both average over 40 points of game.
I think the difference could come down to
Perdition's defense is quite a bit better than Academy of Science.
Now, that doesn't mean that Perdition is going to keep Milwaukee Academy of Science
in check.
They've got a lot of athletes that they put out there,
including Josiah Johnson, one of the state's leading rushers.
The junior quarterback, Raylon Albertan, from Academy of Science is outstanding.
They've got some pretty good receivers as well.
So it's going to be a challenge for Perdition,
but as long as they have Blake Theory, anything and everything is possible for the Black Clots.
What he has done this year, I don't know if I've seen a player just dominate as a receiver
in a ball carrier as much as he has this year.
Doing it from different positions and different spots.
Ultimately, wherever he is is a good chance where the ball is going to end up,
and it's been awful impressive getting a couple running clock shutouts in the playoffs.
Who is the best team still going in Division 4?
Division 4 is interesting because the match up this week and the top right,
I think over when is that one is probably my favorite to win state.
I pick Columbus.
They play Aquinas this week and Aquinas is a three-time
with any state champion in Division 5, bumped up to D4.
Columbus technically is bumped up to D4 as well.
They did win a Division 4 championship a couple of years ago,
but that's a really great game.
We saw them play in the playoffs last year, actually.
So that's a really fun one, but D4 is pretty deep.
On the other side, you've got Freedom, who's undefeated,
comes out of a really good conference ball with Woodville,
representing the middle border conference,
when a con is undeaten,
we're seeing to take references on beaten.
It's a really deep field left in D4.
Well, as we move on to D3, we'll ask you about last week's game.
First of all, your Readsburg-Beevers losing by a point to Catholic Memorial.
Sounds like you had chances, Travis.
Certainly did, and that's one of them that we felt like we could and should have won.
It was a great high school football game.
Went back and forth, especially late in the game.
I think there was four touchdowns in the last four or five minutes.
One of those that whoever had the ball with a scoring chance last was likely going to win.
We scored with a little over a minute and a half left to go up by seven.
Catholic Memorial went down and scored with just under 30 seconds remaining,
and I read an article.
Their defensive coordinator told their head coach Bill Young,
we can't stop them.
We can't go to overtime.
We're not going to be able to stop them.
So we have to go for two.
So they went for two, ended up converting on a quarterback run,
which put us down by one, and just ran out of time.
We got down the field, had a couple of plays, got us into position.
I think just past midfield, maybe around midfield, and I think if we have 30 seconds,
we are able to run a couple more plays and get into field position,
a field goal position, at least, because they weren't going to stop us.
We knew it, they knew it, but ultimately just ran out of time,
and that's kind of what I told the kids after the game.
It was a great game, and in a lot of emotion, obviously,
it wasn't so much that we lost.
It was one of those where we just kind of ran out of time.
But a great game, a great season by the beavers with a lot to look forward to,
really excited for what we have going and really excited for my son,
who will be a senior next year.
He's a junior right now, quite as first touched down of the year,
last week, and so we've got a lot of work to do in the off season,
but things are looking up.
How do they match up against Mounthorah Barnavell for tonight's game, would you say?
I think, Kethan Memorial matches up better against Mounthorah Barnavell than they did against us.
We're winged to run heavy, pound of football, and they weren't going to stop us.
They've got some big kids up front, but we were able to do some things on the ground.
They're very talented and very athletic, especially in the bad end of the defense,
and I think that athleticism matches up better with a spread team like Mounthorah Barnavell,
who's very good, they're undefeated, they've got a lot of weapons on offense,
but I think CMH actually matches up better with them than they did against us.
Are you headed out for a game to watch this weekend?
Yep, I'm going to be staying in Division 3.
I'm taking over a game of the week.
Duties from Cold Wilson, so I'll be out at the Quick Trip at Wisconsin Dairy Game,
but a week making a trip across the state to Grafton,
as the Black Locks will face off against Hop Ranked in Unbeaten Notre Dame.
Really looking forward to this one.
Grafton was the runner-up in Division 3 last year.
Notre Dame has been ranked number one, pretty much all year.
Features in Notre Dame University commit James Plann again,
and some other really talented players.
Personally, I think you're the two best teams in Division 3,
leading up in Level 3, so looking forward to that one.

and now 36 for 37 on the season from the charity stripe.
Senior Guard Max Klesmet scored a season I-26,
one shy of his career high.
For the Badgers, they will take on Appalachian State
on Sunday in Madison.
A big second half performance powered the box to a 123-100 victory
over the Utah Jazz,
that ended a six game losing streak.
Yannis out to the Cumpo and Damian Lillard
did the heavy lifting again,
combining four 65 points.
Yannis had a double double with 31 points and 16 rebounds.
Milwaukee connected on 15 of 35 three point attempts
and outscored the Jazz 6639 in the third and fourth quarters.
The next test is tougher with the NBA champion Celtics
visiting on Sunday.
The Packer running game rates fourth of the NFL for total yards,
and it could be getting better with an addition.
The trade of defensive lineman Preston Smith
has created an open spot on the 53 man roster.
It could be filled by rookie Marshawn Lloyd,
who has been on injured reserve with an ankle injury
since September 15th.
And Lamar Jackson threw three fourth quarter touchdown passes
and Baltimore stopped Cincinnati on a two point conversion
with 38 seconds left to hold off the Bengals 36 to 34.
