Are you
doing today?
Good morning, Sam.
I'm doing okay.
Thanks for asking as always appreciate that You know, it's a little bit dark out there right now,
right?
And
so, you know thinking ahead with our change of clocks this coming weekend I often wonder if that's a good thing or a bad thing in the mornings when it's still dark out irregardless of that one-hour change But in any event that's it's pretty comfortable out there.
So we'll take it.
That's right
I mean, it's nice to have this warmer weather that we have been having.
I'm not sure what it looks like.
I haven't checked the forecast recently.
Yeah, it's going to be a little bit warmer today and then a dip, so to speak, to get back to our average temperatures.
And then it looks like it might level off for some fifties or upper fifties for a few days in the next several.
So we'll take that for sure.
That's right.
We will.
Yeah.
So today we're going to talk just about a lot of updates.
We don't have a caller on.
We're going to have some more folks starting next week again and the week after.
I'll get into that a little bit later, but a lot of things have been going on, right?
And so last week we had Copper Bowl week.
a lot of events, activities, et cetera.
We talked about that.
Again, all the thanks out there to the members of the school district, the community who were active participants.
I would be remiss if I didn't highlight, obviously, the outcomes from last
week.
You know, we taught going into it, not just what goes on with their spirit week and their students, but at the end of the day, you know, the copper bowl, copper place.
Copper Spike Week was centered around the activity of the contests that we have between the Bulldogs and the Gremlins.
And, you know, Thursday night, we had our lady volleyball program go over and compete at Houghton High School.
Very good environment, good crowd, you know, want to give Houghton their due with having a good venue, an excellent venue for the environment to be able to showcase the ladies participating on the
And of course, the outcome was very favorable to the Bulldogs taking a 3-0 win against them to claim the Copper Spike once again.
And so there were several, many years that our valuable programs struggled to either capture, regain, or retain the Copper Spike.
And so for the last couple of years now, we've been on the fortune side of not only earning, but then retaining the Copper Spike.
So kudos to Coach Lampa and the ladies of the program for taking the Copper Spike last week.
And then of course the culmination of the week with copper bowl itself game at connan field beautiful evening You know we talked about going into you know there aren't many years where you'd say okay It's going to be 60 65 degrees at kickoff for copper bowl for the traditional last game of the season You know several years ago.
I recall when my boys were still playing we we had at had to be near 70 for one of those games But then of course the flip year it can change real quick and in my own memories of
playing in snow or sleeting rain sideways, all those that go into it.
But beautiful night for the game.
And of course, the outcome was very favorable for the Bulldog 16-10 win.
Very good, exciting game to watch, you know, back and forth.
It made it interesting at times, whether it be some calls or some missed opportunities, things to that effect.
But at the end of the day, the Bulldogs found a way at the very end of the game to punch it home and secure the win.
So great effort all in all by our Bulldog community last week and just want to throw it out there that, hey, it's good being a Bulldog.
I did hear that was the first win in five years.
We carried the broadcast, so we had Jacob Kahn to mention that on the air.
So that's very exciting for them to pull up and pull off this win.
Oh, absolutely.
You know, there's like as you just referenced, it's been several years now for the Hoopal team to to recapture the Copper Bowl.
And I, you know, I should notice I don't I don't want to be accurate.
But the total run is, you know, right now, the Bulldogs have roughly 44, 46 wins in Copper Bowl to Houghton's 23 or 24.
It's something and don't quote me because I have we have a poster.
of all the games and the records, and it just, it was to the side of my, I guess, not desire, but to actually...
get that data point down.
And so I'll, I'll correct that.
I'll get that down and I'll have that earmarked in my brain.
That's something I should never forget.
I won't, moving forward, I guess I'll put it that way.
Um, but yeah, so several years, uh, since we, we got the cartwheel back and so just a great effort, uh, just, you know, with coach LaClaire, Brennan and his staff, uh, Nate and Ben and Connor, uh, and everybody else who helped support the program, you know, did an exceptional job, uh, going back to the spring and getting that enthusiasm, enthusiasm back in the program, you know, Brennan Spinal.
a lot of time in our co-op schools, Dollar Bay, Chastle and Jeffers to work with those student athletes who are part of the program and really get them excited.
Also talking with those student athletes who've been part of the programs in the past, who maybe even come out in the last year or two.
And then the encouragement of those younger student athletes who are just coming up to the ranks of being a freshman, sophomores who maybe haven't played before and getting out for the program and just really enthusiastic about it.
So great job by the staff, Brendan, great job by the
You know, they had some opportunities throughout the season to make some other plays and opportunities that perhaps could have put them in position, even for a playoff opportunity.
However, obviously that did happen, but moving forward, very, very pleased and very excited with what Coach Leclerc will bring to the program, moving forward, and an excitement again around bulldog football.
That's right, you know, I hope the team continues to have many successes going forward
Yep, you know and just on that note because I got a list of things I want to add so if we're still on football I just want to put it out there So the the Westpac conference had their their coaches meeting this past Monday And they were able to recognize the all all conference selections for each division the copper and the iron division And so this is the first year now we're part of the iron division So that's considered the smaller school side of the of the conference with the copper being the largest school
side.
And so with that, we've had, we're very fortunate to have some recognizes or honorees for all conference awards.
The first team all conference selection we have for the Bullogs this year, Mr. Drew Larson, defensive line for us, you know, had a very good year all around in a division with some exceptional football players and teams right now.
And so, you know, Barkover Harris, Iron Mountain, et cetera, in our division, you know,
They took the majority, I guess, of the all-conference honoree designations.
But with Drew making first team, we do have several others on the second team.
I just want to point out right now, so we have Offensive Tackle, Jasper Tolles at wide receiver Max Nordstrom.
And we had at outside linebacker, excuse me, Blake Heldinen.
Then we had defensive back Ben Karenin, you know, and I know Ben, he is buying.
by all measures, you know, our best athlete on the field.
Starting quarterback, you know, does everything.
He's a multi-sport athlete, except extremely talented physically and gifted mentally within the sport of, or within the context of each of the sports.
So
his
ability to think through the games and process puts him above, you know, the average.
And so him getting recognition at that defensive back spot was important.
You know, the quarterback from Iron Mountain had a stellar, stellar season.
So that Iron Mountain.
and Corbach did get the first team all recognition, but good for Ben getting that defense back position.
Punter, Forest, La Courte, even though Forest was injured the last couple of games of the season, so he wasn't actually able to complete the year with those kicking and punting duties, but great job for Forest.
And then we had some honorable mention people out there as well, what we'll put out.
So first we had...
Trent Piedla as inside linebacker, and then Isaac Wanala as the defensive back as well.
So congratulations to those players in receiving that recognition for football and to Coach Tolles again.
So again, looking forward to the next steps in the program.
Kind of spinning from there, I guess we'll keep the athletic side of it before I get into the general aspects of conversation and updates.
Volleyball.
So we just talked about Copper Spike last week with volleyball.
So last night at the HCH gym, we had our last regular season game of the year contest versus Cali-Man, our traditional year-end opponent.
We did have our senior parent appreciation tonight as well, recognizing the program and great contest.
Unfortunately, I wasn't there.
Personally, it wasn't there present.
I was able to watch it online and cheer on from the sidelines, so to speak.
And so you call a nail by the room call.
I went to five games full set.
So in Hancock earned the victory three games to two to complete an exceptional season.
We had Coach Lamp on a few weeks ago.
You know, the ladies have been just performing very well, very consistent, methodical in their approach.
And when they get down, they haven't flustered too much.
And so they
That's been great to see when you have...
The team competing as they have and they're doing as well as they have towards the end of the season that that hopefully carries over into the tournament play.
So next week with districts, we do have a first round buy.
So we do not play on Monday, but we will host the next game on Wednesday of next week.
And so we are scheduled to play the winner of Dollar Bay or Copper Island Academy.
And so
It'll be, you know, the first of hopefully many contests through the postseason for the team.
And I know they're anxiously anticipating getting onto the floor for the postseason for districts.
And then on the other side of the bracket, you have Berga, Lake Linden, and I believe, I should know this, but I don't have to top my head.
I think Lake Linden is playing first round.
You know what?
I don't want to say it because I don't have a top of my head.
I didn't have the bracket, but I know it's you know more than likely and there's never
We never want to assume in postseason play, but more than likely, it's going to be Lakeland and Endor Berga that we'll end up seeing if we are a fortune to advance after Wednesday in the district final.
You know, Berga has been exceptional this year as well.
And Lakeland right behind them, we've had some very, a couple of tough contests with Lakeland.
We played Berga once.
And so, you know, they're not, they're known opponents protect potentially.
So we'll see how it goes and look.
more than likely to see one of those on next Friday.
So, outside of that, you know, with the completion of football.
In cross-country when I talk about cross-country we had the UP finals this past weekend as well on Saturday at the Houghton ski trails rain trails Great day, you know, obviously for those that were out there Mild temperatures a little bit of a wind but fortunately in the in the tree lines of the ski trails not too terrible You know, we had our kids complete extremely well I think you know, although we didn't have a winning outcome that we've had the last two years.
We had some exceptional
personal efforts by our student athletes, getting their own personal records and competing very well and, you know, again, representing being a bulldog in the program thus far to date under Coach Smith and Coach Toll.
So great job by the student athletes for the UP finals from cross country.
Now, switching gears a little bit, we are having tryouts for hockey.
So you flip that switch, we go from fall right into winter, you know, and so those programs that can get on the ice right now and have their tryouts and then officially begin a week later via rule, you know, this is the time of year.
Again, we're having that transition.
So Coach Burkar and his staff are having the young men having their trout.
components this week ready to go for next week and then we basketballs won't start for another couple weeks so just to put that on the radar you know there's a there is that delay with the basketball season versus hockey so it'll be coming up soon but in any event it's that that transition time of year and we're talking about athletics so on that note I want to try to get to some other highlights or some other updates for the school district itself Halloween week right so
this is a great time of year for in particular elementary students.
Yeah, they look forward to all year.
This is kind of...
the elementary version of Copper Bowl Spirit Week, right?
So, you know, there's fun, there's enthusiasm, there's costumes, there are all kinds of things that goes into it.
So, you know, what I just want to put out there is, you know, the Principal Eddie and staff, they do a wonderful job of working with the students, different forms and functions of activities that go on around the Halloween spirit.
You know, this Friday in particular, we have our annual pumpkin drop.
And so this is for our fifth grade students, particularly.
We're all the students from Barquel going to the gymnasium, and then we
We have our lift, which we go up in the air and groups or teams of fifth graders work on ways in which to protect pumpkins from a fall.
And so there's all kinds of different.
And engineering and ingenuity type of activities go into it.
And of course, the idea is to hopefully keep the pumpkin from breaking when it hits the floor in the gym.
That might be to the dismay of the students in the crowd.
They love watching them splatter
all over
the place.
So any event, it is a scientific process, engineering process for our students to have to work through and problem solve and see if they can compete against one another in groups to keep pumpkins from breaking.
So that's a great activity.
That's going to be just after 9 a.m.
on Friday in the gymnasium, something we do every year.
Always look forward to it.
And then our first grade.
Now, we also have a full Halloween costume walk.
But then our first graders will be going to Portage Point and intersect to not only showcase their costumes to our...
senior citizens in those two venues, but also do some singing as well.
So it's a great engagement piece for our students to be part of and, you know, interact and engage with our community members in that fashion.
So good time, fun time for our Maltry students.
Another piece I just want to throw out to real quick is next week for those that, you know, we have it in our announcements, you know, we have the UP Regional Smiles on Wheels program coming to the elementary next week.
So this is the mobile general hygiene
program that's run out of Marquette, Uskenaba area and they come up annually and they help provide free cleanings and examinations for us students who don't have otherwise access and so just want to thank them for their time and being here next week and just put that in everybody's radar as well.
Kind of moving on now, jumping up real quick to middle school, high school.
This is also a former spirit week for the middle school.
And so, you know, last week we have the copper bowl as we keep referencing.
And yes, our middle school is engaged in many of the aspects of what we have for this senior high.
But this week is also kind of tied into that carryover copper, but also with the hollow wing components of having some spirit behind it.
So we have different forms of dress-up days this week for the middle school.
And in fact, today we have an apple cider.
fundraising event for the middle school.
They're selling Apple Cider and then they have, again, different dress-up days.
And then on Friday, of course, it'll be costume days, things of that nature.
So just another way to have some excitement and some enthusiasm specific to the middle schoolers and working with their student council aspects and what they want to do and how they want to continue to have their own little piece of fun, so to speak.
Also just the heads up so we are quickly coming up to the end of quarter one
Already so we talked about the change in athletics from season to season So a week from Friday will be the the end of quarter one for us and so you know the Aspects of getting grades in and that information to parents via our power school system and and great reports that we will then be having our parent teacher conferences a week from next Thursday and so that's you know, we have
Actually, it's next Wednesday, so a week from Wednesday.
So we have a half day on the 12th, and then the second half of the day will be reserved for parent-teacher conferences.
We do have a sign-up out there that is being circulated for both Barquel and the Middle School High School.
It's an electronic form of scheduling, and so parents can go and find that link to schedule their time with respective teachers for their students
and have
those important conversations for the front of the year.
With that,
I just also want to recognize finally when we're talking about grades and other The other really important news that we've had come out recently and that is the fact that Barquel elementary and the middle school have been named once again US News World Report elementary and middle school honoris and so What that means is because we're again as we're being recognized as a top leader in the state of Michigan and regionally
There are several other schools locally who are also receiving the same accolade, albeit I think we're the one getting
elementary and middle school, so two of our schools, so to speak, and this is the second year in a row.
And so this is obviously a reflection of the efforts that Principal Eddy and our staff at Barquel are working every day in providing that exceptional learning environment for our students, the achievements of our students.
In particular, we had a while ago, we talked about the M-STEP scores and the achievement level that our elementary students have, third and fourth grade respectively, tops in the copper country.
tops in the state for both ELA and math from advanced and proficient fourth grade math as well fifth grade math all those things that go into it so we're seeing the benefits of the work that our faculty and staff are putting in and the benefits of the hard efforts and work by our students in particular and that is certainly carrying on as they're matriculating in age getting up to middle school and into high school and so You know these achievements these these awards or recognitions, you know, I can't you know, thank all the
individuals, including the parents of our students who are fully engaged in our students learning and supporting those efforts by our staff and by the Bullock community.
So great to recognize, great to feel, so to speak.
And certainly, just again, one of those things which is making our environment a little bit different and more supportive and very intentional along those ways too.
I mean, we've worked very hard in the last couple of years to be what we want to say vertically,
in line with one another and in supporting the efforts from K all the way up to 12.
And these are the steps that take everybody's efforts, starting in kindergarten, starting in young fives, starting in our GSRP program, in fact, and working with each of those students every day, every week, every month, every semester, every year, as they continue to, again, grow and learn and achieve in every grade we have.
So kudos to the staff.
And I just want to put that out there and say thanks to everybody else out there who helps support everything we do as Bulldog community.
All right.
Thank you very much for being here.
Anything else you want to mention before we go?
Well, you know, again, as always, thanks to you, Sam, and the radio station.
Genos are sponsoring.
Next week we'll talk about more.
All right.
Sounds like a great time.
This has been the Bulldog Bite.

And it's time for Hang on Caffeidings.
Todd Gast is here in the studio now.

It's kind of balmy out there.
Is it?
Yeah, it's kind of warm.
Okay.

So it's a
There hasn't been much frost on any pumpkins that I know of
that's right.
It's been a lot warmer

So that'll be a lot of fun.
So that's a
at the Church of the Resurrection, trunk or treating.

That'll be a lot of fun.
Like I said, Church of the Resurrection, trunk or treating.
And that is Saturday, October 31st from five until seven.
And it's a great way for you to socialize, like I said, and help create a fun, safe evening for our community's children.
