And welcome back to Mix93.
It is time for the Bulldog Bite.
It is usual Chris Solani is here with us in the studio.
How you doing today?
Good morning, Sam.
I'm doing pretty well again.
Thank you for asking as normal or usual, I should say.
Yeah, well...
Looks like another rainy day out there.
You know it actually is
well it there the precipitation isn't there right now as I was walking into the studio But obviously the last day or two and then we have the next day coming up or so definitely we have that that mix of rain and I think I saw last night and a little bit of a surprise I guess but just paying attention to the weather forecast a wintry mix perhaps
so
Uh, I guess there it is.
We're at, you know, we go from what, 80 degrees on the weekend, uh, Saturday, Sunday, now to the wintery mix episodes.
I did not see that.
Hopefully that, hopefully it's just rain for the moment.
I haven't wanted quite yet.
Yeah, maybe that's just the highlands
of the U.P.
So, but we'll see.
We'll see.
Yeah.
So what's going on today?
Yeah.
We do.
And so we're at that time of year right now that where we, uh, we invite, um, our spirit
club advisor to come on air with us to talk specifically about our Copper Bowl week.
And so we're, we have Miss Stacy Bisher with us this morning.
Good morning, Stacy.
How are you?
How are you doing?
I'm good.
Good morning, Chris.
Good morning, Sam.
Good morning.
Yeah.
Well, thanks for being honest.
And so, as I was just describing, so, you know, we have Copper Bowl coming up next week.
And this, for all our listeners, our alumni and other, and of course, the members of both the cities of Hancock and Houghton understand that the Copper Bowl week and festivities around it, you know, going back to the 50s, the 1950s, I'd say, you know, is a very important time for our school districts, both from the standpoint of engagement opportunities, activities.
and athletics, of course.
And so, you know, the last several years, we've had an opportunity to bring our spirit club advisor on, which Stacy is, to talk about kind of the process leading up to the couple week and all the different activities that go into it and kind of the resources and just the network of connections and relationships that are navigated in order to do some of the things that we're doing.
And so this morning, we asked Ms.
Bishop to come on to talk a little bit about kind of the process she's been
engaged with as this is her first year as the spirit club advisor and so I guess Stacy from that standpoint what I'll do is I'll let you just give the 30,000 foot overview of you first.
I'm not sure that we had you in ready before but a valued member of her faculty and I'll let you just talk a little bit about your regular day job first for us in the Hancock High School, Hancock School of Systems.
So go
ahead.
All right well aside from being the
spirit club advisor this year.
I am also the high school health and PE teacher, so I teach health and physical education to 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th graders.
In addition to just health and physical education, I also teach additional classes such as advanced personal fitness, a weightlifting class, and I do an advanced physical education class as well.
And just off the top, I was trying to think, I should have thought this before, so I could have a number.
But how long have you been with us now in Hancock Public Schools?
This was my sixth year.
This is my sixth year teaching.
So I did start in the middle of the school year, but I just had my sixth start last semester.
Yep.
So, you know, I've been a tenured member of our faculty here now, so it's not new for you to be in the environment where we talk about our copper bowl and our spirit club, things to that nature.
And so you've been very engaged up to this year, obviously as a faculty and staff member in support of our students and all the activities we do.
But why don't you talk a little bit about kind of the leading up to this fall and then working with our students and what the types of planning and organization that has gone into getting set up for this coming week.
So like we've mentioned, this is my first year doing this.
So I was a little nervous going into it, but we have a great group of students that form our spirit club.
So I had a good group of students come in and get ready to plan this comparable week.
And we started meetings about a month ago.
So we're meeting once or twice a week.
They give up their lunch period to come and meet with me.
And that's great for them to do, because I know that they cherish that.
half an hour break in the middle of the day.
This year we are really looking at student engagement.
So we, part of our Bulldogs Rise, the E stands for engagement.
So we thought, how can we really engage our entire student body?
So that's kind of the mindset that we had when we went in to our planning this year.
So our activities try to include
different interests and make sure that we're getting everyone involved from 9th grade to 12th grade.
And we also have a fun community engagement event in our Copper Bowl week this year too.
That was our mind-sickling into
it.
Okay, so let's talk about, you know, obviously the students, some members of the Spirit Club come in and they do their planning activities and organizational efforts with you during those lunch periods leading up for the last month or so.
What are some, were there specific tasks that our students had to fulfill going into this week coming up?
Yes, our students had to, they had to collaborate and come up with our themes for our dress-up days.
They had to call area businesses, so we do downtown decorating where we go downtown to Quincy Street or our businesses located close to, and they call them, which is a very big task for a younger generation to do these days, but they did so good at it, and get these local businesses to participate in our downtown decorating.
So, essentially, we're going to go in
to the businesses that approved up to and that the students will go in next monday and they will decorate their storefront windows with uh... bulldog bulldog deco and red and yellow and uh... it's really fun at any event so they do that in terms of our planning and then they come up with all the details for our powder pop game which is the girls playing football they come up with all the details for a powder pop game which is our boys playing volleyball against each other
We're doing a school-wide cornhole tournament this year.
They came up with a great idea for that.
We're going to also have that be a fundraiser for the Spirit Club.
And then they also did a small can drive for us.
They actually had cans left over from last year's fundraising.
And they stayed after school one day, and they sorted out those cans.
And we got those over to Coca-Cola, who works with us.
wonderfully and that gave us some funds to Support our spirit club and and all the things that we need going into comparable week
Absolutely, so that that's you know going into this week You kind of you touch base on a couple items and and then how we have our days filled out Can you can you give us a rundown or an overview of the activities that we have each day?
Absolutely
So we kick off Monday.
We're doing something new this year with downtown decorating.
Generally, we go in in the morning.
And as you know, it can be frosty cold this year in 8 to 10 hour AM mark.
So we changed it this year.
We are going into the businesses that chose to participate in the afternoons.
So after lunch, our students will go out to Quincy Street.
They'll decorate the storefront windows on Monday afternoon.
And then when they come back to the school, our girls who are participating in powder puff will have that last hour of the day to do some powder puff practice, because we've learned that girls get a little nervous when it comes to playing football, even though it's like football.
They think they don't know the rules, so we wanted to make sure they felt comfortable when going into the big powder puff game, which we are holding that night at Condon Field.
So that is also something new.
Monday night at seven o'clock,
The community is invited to come down to Condon Field.
We will have the lights on, concessions open, and we would love for everyone to come out and watch our freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors all participate in powder pop football, so they will be competing against one another to see which class comes out as the champions.
So we will be charging a dollar admission at that game, and that's just a fundraiser for the Spirit Club.
However, all students and children under six will get in free.
So just a dollar admission to get in.
The money raised will go towards the Spirit Club.
The Booster Club will be there.
There will be concessions open.
We'll have the lights on.
We will have music.
We will have announcing.
It's going to be a fun event.
So we hope that everyone comes out and supports these girls.
event this year.
And then Wednesday we are having a cornhole tournament.
So this is an all school cornhole tournament.
Students can make up their own teams of two and they will come in that day and compete per grade to find the best team per grade.
So we will have the cornhole champions of ninth grade, tenth grade, eleventh grade, and twelfth grade.
decided on wednesday and then those four teams will come in on friday at our big assembly and they will compete in front of the school in the finals to find out who is the cornhole champion of copper ball week we have that going on wednesday uh... thursday at during third and fourth hour purposes in the later morning we will have our powder buff game which is our boys who sign up they will be playing volleyball against each other per grade so nine ten eleven twelve graders
That was fun to watch.
Volleyball is a very engaging sport.
It's fun to watch the boys get to play it.
They get really excited about it.
So that will be happening Thursday morning.
And then we'll also end that powder buff game or games with a pep assembly for our volleyball teams and our JV football team because they will take off after school to head across the bridge.
And JV will be playing Houghton.
over at the Houghton Field and Volleyball will be taking on Houghton over in the Houghton High School.
So we will end the powder buff game with a pep assembly to make sure that those teams are pumped up and ready to go into their competitions.
And then Friday we will have our big copper bull assembly, 6th and 7th hour.
The copper bull or the spear club girls have been coming up with some fun games and activities to try to get all students involved.
We will have the Cornhole Tournament.
We have some fun stuff done by teachers.
And that will conclude the week for us before we send off our varsity football team.
Okay, wonderful.
We appreciate that rundown of our activities for this coming week.
It is a lot, and there's a lot of effort and coordination as you've provided here with regard to your engagement with the students, the spirit club itself, and then the other things I just want to touch on.
The radio station has been a great supporter and partner in this as well when we talk about downtown decoration.
This happened several years ago, kind of the first
opportunity to do it.
And it's been really a positive component to our Copper Bowl week in getting our students down and working with the businesses.
And the business is most importantly allowing us to do that.
You know, this year, every year we do, we, you know, rotate who plays home for the football game itself.
But this year, hosting the varsity game at Connenfield, you know, it's great when you're driving through downtown and you see all the reference of Bulldog support and Bulldog pride and the colors and things of that nature and certainly
that's going into the game wonderful for everybody to be able to see and drive through and then just another spirit component of bulldog pride that we relish and so just from my component or from my standpoint in my desk I just want to thank all those businesses as usual for their willingness to participate with with you miss Bisher and our spirit club to be able to showcase that pride of being a bulldog so I just want to put that quick shout out there out there as well
absolutely and I do want to say when
you
When these students call these businesses, these businesses were so happy to have them come in and decorate and they were excited to hear from the students.
And yes, like you said, we are very grateful that they participate in this activity.
Absolutely.
Well, Miss Bishra, you know, I said we'd stay about 10 minutes.
We're kind of right on that mark.
So is there anything else you'd like to put out there or add with regard to this coming Copper Bowl Week and the Spirit Club, your advisement of that club or anything else?
No, I do have a little small request.
So I mentioned on Wednesday we are having our all school cornhole tournament.
And we have had some gracious staff members donate some boards, some cornhole boards for us to use on that day.
But still, we have about six sets of boards.
And we could use some more.
So if there are any families, alumni,
community members that have cornhole boards for us to borrow, or if somebody has an old set hanging out in their garage, they haven't took them out in a couple years, and they're willing to donate them to the school and the PE program, I would be happy to take them off your hand.
So just get all of me if you are interested in donating or borrowing some cornhole boards, and I will even come pick them up and return them to you if needed.
Wonderful, that's a great little bump there as well because always with with need of equipment and around but as you referenced this is going to be a school-wide event so it's going to be we're anticipating quite a bit of participants and so to be able to expedite and have efficiency those certainly that request hopefully is received well by our alumni community so thanks for that as well.
Yes and make sure everybody comes out Monday night show these girls that you support them in their powder puff game
This is a trial for the Spirit Club to have this powder puff game on Monday night at seven o'clock underneath the lights.
We used to have it during the school day.
So if you don't have plans this upcoming Monday at seven o'clock, come on down to the field and cheer on these girls.
All right, wonderful.
Well, there we have it, Ms.
Stacy Bisher, our Spirit Club advisor, high school health and physical education, slash other faculty members.
So Ms.
Bisher, thank you for your time this morning.
Thanks.
Thanks Sam.
Yeah, thank you for being here.
Yeah.
Have a good day guys.
You too.
You too.
So anything else you want to talk about on the last matter to the last minute?
It doesn't leave a lot of time
does it?
Just I guess just some some updates outside that so you know as normal we kind of just throw out there some of our extracurricular activities outside of the spirit club and activities for cardboard next week Coming up to actually today.
We have for people's awareness.
We have the Westpac championship for cross-country running today So our teams so be heading down.
I believe it's at Gwyn this year and so
or end of season conference championship, then...
Think a reference last week cross-country will then be competing next Saturday So a week from this Saturday, but next Saturday the 24th will be the UP finals and that will be again at the Michigan Tech ski trails Great venue.
And so we're looking forward to coach Smith and her program competing exceptionally well at that time tomorrow We're in Thursday now tomorrow.
I believe we have volleyball heading to ishpriming and then we have football on Friday heading to Lawns and so
Some way events this week before we pull everybody back in for next week during carp ball for some more home Contest athletically speaking and then yeah, we'll look forward to Some positive outcomes from that side of our sports Programming other than that, you know, I guess we're I could go on quite a bit more here But we'll next week.
We'll talk a little bit about not only what's going on for carp ball week
some other activities but you know we're going to help as a district help provide some information with regard to the new public library formation the Hancock area library and the the request from that entity from the entity the Hancock area library for millage ballot
or Ballot Language Four-Millage to help support a public library here in our district.
So right now, we have a partnership with Project District Library.
They operate out of our library venue in the high school, middle school.
And so this is an effort in order to help support operations there that is not directly tied to the school district.
But in any event, we obviously get some wonderful benefits by having a partnership in that
with having a partnership with PLDL and the prospective future Hancock area district library, both as a reference, both direct as well as indirect.
And so we'll talk a little bit more about that and maybe kind of the efforts that we're gonna provide from a communication standpoint out to the community with regard to that next week.
All right, sounds good.
I'm looking forward to hearing about it.
All right, wonderful.
All right, this has been the Bulldog Bite right here on Mixed 93.
And welcome back to Mixed93.
It's time for Hancock Happenings.
Todd Gast is here.
How are you doing today?
Oh, I'm doing pretty good.
Happy Wednesday.
Yes, happy Wednesday
to you.
How is it out there?
It's pretty good.
I mean, it doesn't feel like 46 degrees.
It feels warmer than that.
But there's no wind.
No wind.
So that's helpful.
But I guess we're going to start getting a little bit more seasonal temperatures.
How's that?
That's right.
Uh, Chris Solani did come in here and mention that there's going to be a wintery mix.
Uh-oh.
This week.
Uh-oh.
I haven't verified that myself yet.
Yeah, Chris has gotta calm down, I think.
We don't want to be, like, starting to get some rumors out there about the S-word.
I'm not ready personally, but what is it saying on the official...
Well, for what I see, I don't see any of that for the remainder of the week.
Just some rain, some sun on the weekend.
Because I was seeing a 64 for a high on Sunday.
Yeah, that is what I'm seeing.
All right.
Well, hey, let's hope that let's hope that we're not going to have the wintery mix, not right now.
That's right.
Good weather for your Hancock happenings.
We got Hancock happenings and it is fall all over.
So we've got game night here in downtown Hancock and it's a place.
to be for fun.
You can go on over to Casey Bonkers at 119 Quincy Street every Thursday for Game Night.
They've got such a great collection of games.
What a great family fun night you can have there.
And then we can move on down to New Teenies Supper Club, 321 Quincy Street, hosting Trivia Night every Thursday, and that starts at 8.30.
So if you're into trivia, you like to get together with friends and family, this is where you want to be because it is quite the happening.
New Teenies Supper Club
321 Quincy Street trivia night every Thursday and that's at 830 and Open Skates are back at HoCo Arena talk about fun every Friday 645 to 8 p.m.
Keep an eye on our calendar and our social media Post for this because things can change because guess what hockey season is just right around the corner.
I'm sure Chris was telling talking about that
on the Hancock Bulldog bite.
But, you know, if there's a home game, we're going to have to cancel or move our open skate.
But for right now, it's Friday evening, 6.45 to 8.00 p.m.
And if you'd like to rent the ice sheet up at the Hoco for a special event, a special party, it's as easy as one, two, three.
Just email arena.
at cityofhandcock.com.
That's Arena at cityofhandcock.com.
And they're going to help you out with your reservation.
And we love our October Arts here at Hancock.
We have awesome arts every month.
But October, it's super special at the exhibition at the Copper Country Community Arts Center, which is remembering Gordon
Borswald, and that's at the Cynthia Cote Exhibition Gallery.
That's through October 31st.
Boo, that's right on Halloween.
So if you can get on over there to check that out, it is fantastic.
So that's the Remembering Gordon Borswald exhibition at the Copper Country Community Art Center.
We also have a great exhibit at the Finlandia Art Gallery, which is a presentation by Joyce Kaskamaki.
Kayao Maywa, and Maggie Parr, Randy Wacom, and Kenyan Hansen.
This is a teacher and student exhibition.
They're from the former Finlandia University.
So it features paintings, printmaking, fiber, drawings, and clay exhibits.
And this show goes through November 20th.
And I've been to both these shows.
both these exhibits, they're fantastic.
So check them out and you're going to be happy you did.
We're also working on the new Bright Spot Hancock Community Art Project.
We've had 10 artists on Saturday paint their 15 inch, 15 inch circular discs that will be installed throughout the city of Hancock for November, December, throughout
the winter.
So Bright Spot Hancock, the artists are given an inspirational phrase and they paint that inspirational phrase and then you can go and visit your Bright Spot.
They will be installed on light poles.
So during those darker, gloomier days of winter, you can go and visit your favorite Bright Spot and get a little happier.
That's our hopes anyway.
We are also in fall cleanup for the city of Hancock residence.
Our DPW will be picking up bio bags and bundled branches.
And those bundled branches have to be four feet in length or shorter.
And the leaves have to be packed in bio bags.
So those are those green bags you can buy at city hall.
They're $10 a roll.
And that means they're only a dollar of bags.
So they're also available at high.
High Rock hardware, so they're open until 8 p.m.
City Hall open from 8 a.m.
To 4 30 We are also in the midst of closing down.
It's the summer is over So fall is here.
So we're closing down the Lakeview Cemetery Hancock Beach and campground will be closed tomorrow starting tomorrow October 15th, and we'll see you back in May May 15th It will be the opening May 15th of 2027 so Lake
Cemetery, Hancock Beach, Hancock Campground will be closed starting tomorrow for the season.
Make a different state is this Saturday.
So this is one of our dear departed dead man's most favorite time of year and her favorite event that the city of Hancock did.
So we honor her and we think of her especially this time of year.
So the biggest public service days for Michigan Tech students is Saturday, October 17th from 9 a.m.
to 1 p.m.
We are looking
for a couple more supervisors that can help us clean up some of our parks.
So if you have a couple of hours on Saturday, please give us a call, 906-482-2720.
City of Hancock, email is city at cityofhancock.com.
We need just a couple more supervisors.
You do not have to pick up the rake.
or a bag, you just need to supervise those students to let them know what they need to do and we will let you know what that is.
So we just need your help if you can possibly spare a couple of hours on Saturday.
And if you are elderly, if you are disabled and if you need help, please call Husky Helpers 906-487-1963.
It's not too late to order or get involved and get some students to help you up with your fall cleanup.
We also have a brand new for the season.
It's the Great Hancock Hunt, which is a celebration of spectacular fall happenings here in Hancock.
And that is October 22nd through the 24th.
There will be the Wolf's Head Film Festival, which will be having special events throughout the city of Hancock.
And that will be at the Orpheum Theater, the Hancock Community Hub, Small Craft, Quincy Mine,
New Tunies Supper Club, uh, Wolvenwood Axe Bar.
There will be so many things happening with this, including their zombie prom on October 24th at the Hancock Community Hub.
Uh, we're also having the great, uh, the.
great pumpkin races on Quincy Green and that's sponsored by our friends at Kiwana Cape.
That is the fourth annual Deb Mann Memorial pumpkin races and that is from noon until 4 p.m.
right on Quincy Green.
So if you want to get your pumpkin ready, get the wheels ready, get your decorations ready and that'll happen on Quincy Green.
So we're asking restaurants, bars, businesses, do a promotion during this weekend while people are here in town.
celebrating the film festival and doing the pumpkin races.
What a great way to shine a light on your business.
So if you're interested, we need to know.
So we're going to do social media posts on what you're doing, including keeping our co-op is doing a special fall sampling and tasting on Saturday, October 24th.
So that's just one of the things that is extra happening.
And so we want a lot more extras happening here in downtown Hancock.
Hancock, we can
Get your business on our social media and what you're gonna do.
Give us a call 906-482-2720.
or email cityatcityofhandcock.com.
We're also getting ready for the holidays here in Hancock.
So the 55th annual Christmas walk will be the day after Thanksgiving.
So we've got a jam-packed fun day or evening planned for that.
And this year's theme is joy to the world.
So get your thinking caps on what you want to do for your business, for decorations.
And the Hancock Lates the Night is back.
And we are looking for gently used Christmas decorations.
And if you have them, let's just say if you're elderly and you can't put your decorations out any longer, you want to give them a new life.
Well, this is a great way to do that.
You can give us a call 906-482-2720 or email cityofhandcock.com and we will come and pick them up or you can deliver them right to City Hall.
And we thank you for your cooperation.
on that.
And also I'm going to wear a little bit of a different hat.
We've got the Fall Family Fun Fest this Sunday in Dollar Bay.
So that'll be at the Dollar Bay Fire Hall in Pioneer Park from 1 p.m.
to 3 p.m.
with the Costume Parade beginning at 1 p.m.
sharp with Trunker Tridding from 1 to 3.
And there's big prizes for best costume, tons of activities, fun crafts, popcorn, movie, and much more.
So we're looking forward to having everybody in Dollar Bay.
on Sunday, October 18th from 1 until 3 p.m.
for the Fall Family Fun Fest.
And there we go, that's the things happening.
It's fall, a great time to celebrate.
All right, so thank you for coming in.
Thank you.
Enjoy the day.
This has been Hancock Happenings, you're at Mixed 93.
