Geno's family-owned restaurant in Hancock invites everyone in to see what's new and exciting.

Try one of your original favorites.

Orangeini bites and a catch of the week.

Appetizers include pretzel bites or chips with beer cheese.

Geno's now serves lasagna daily and veggie lasagna on Tuesdays.

Enjoy your meal in Geno's spacious restaurant or on the expanded patio with a patio pal.

Geno's is open Tuesday through Sunday from 11 to 9 closed on Monday.

And here we are welcome back to mix 93 it's time for the bold dog bite We have Chris Solani here in the studio today.

How you doing?

I'm doing well Sam.

Thank you.

How are you doing this morning?

Well, I'm doing pretty good.

Yeah,

how's the weather out there?

Well, the Sun is popping out Definitely very pleasant morning thus far.

I guess I would say it that way my understanding a few winds coming up Maybe a little bit later in the morning this afternoon, but temperature wise it looks to be another really good day and and looking ahead a little bit of a warm

spell coming up for the weekend.

So we'll definitely take that for sure.

Yeah, that's pretty nice.

Nice to have something akin to extended summer.

Absolutely.

You know, especially at this time here in October, you know, full leave change almost, definitely some cooler, crisper nights and mornings as well.

And so yeah, just a little bit further taste of that warm weather will take.

Absolutely.

That's right.

So Hancock school.

So what's going on Hancock

school?

So we don't have anybody coming on with us this morning.

So today we'll take some time just to give some updates and some general information.

out there to our listening audience and and our supporters constituents and members of our community.

So I guess the first thing I want to start with is just a reminder to all our moms and dads and out there and family that this Friday we have no school and so this is the area wide in service.

So this is a day in the fall where all the districts have an opportunity to provide professional development for their staff.

It's a common date on the calendar.

There's there's times where all the students school districts come together at one site for professional

development where the ISD and all the member districts provide different forms of engagement, whether it be from specific professional learning educators out there or different facets of professional development.

This year, this fall, we are on our own.

And so each of the districts carry this date.

I think there are a couple of school systems out there that still have school on Friday.

That's that was a, you know, it's an individual district to state this decision, excuse me.

But

Yet for this Friday, we'll be out.

So students will get to have a nice long weekend, so to speak, and enjoy that weather we just talked about.

And then internally, we will have both our Bar-Kell staff as well as high school and middle school staff engaged in PD throughout the day.

So just one of those opportunities to ensure that we're helping our staff and our students learn and grow every single day in a way that they should and be professionals that they are.

So just a reminder there about Friday.

Some other topics just to discuss real quick.

A very unique, I guess, relationship that we have that I would just want to highlight real quick.

With regard, we have a member of our staff in the high school middle school, Ms.

Leanne Larkin, who's one of our exceptional science teachers.

She's been engaged and involved with our school district from not just a professional capacity, but a personal capacity.

She's kind of been liaison with the Hancock Trails Club, the bike club.

And a couple, I don't want to say two years ago now, but a little over a year.

You know Leanne and the trails club approach the school district and our shop program to help support the development some outdoor furniture picnic tables specifically in some benches for the Creekside trail or Creekside bike park I should say not trail but bike park and for those that don't know I'll kind of put this in context the best I can so many people remember if I want to date myself a little bit excuse me the old Eagles Club aka

into a couple different eateries and this is out on M203 past the beach and the campground on your right side and just to just be on there where the old building used to be there's a little trailhead system in which the bike park was developed or has been developed through a lot of volunteer power a lot of volunteer work and then certainly from the standpoint of the engagement pieces they could go out and manufacture with their relationships and this is just one of those opportunities where

Our shop program, our students were directly involved with helping provide and develop pieces about door furniture.

And so that's kind of been a process the last couple of years or last year and a half.

You know, those were completed through the tenure of our previous shop teacher, Mr. Fred Yanyi.

Certainly want to thank him for his time and efforts within our program.

This past spring, we were able to, I think, deliver those particular pick tables out to the Creekside Bike Park and, you know, again, through some volunteer efforts of non...

our staff but others.

And then today Leanne is taking a group of our students to go out and complete that project, that process of the project of how our students have been engaged and involved up to date.

So just one of those community engagement pieces that I just want to help recognize again from the evolution of a thought and some vision by the members of the organization, the biking organization, the trail club on through to the engagement with our local community and of course the school.

District.

It's a great presentation of those connected pieces that we're going to be involved with and how we can support the overall health and development of the community.

And this is certainly an example of that.

So I'm going to be heading out there after the show here and take a look and get some video perhaps and then talk a little more about the process that's been involved, but just a wonderful project all

Joel Karnick

the way

around that our students have been engaged with.

So excited for them and certainly the development through Ms.

Lachanin and the Trails Club.

We also have some things that we kind of

do on teen this past Monday.

We had want to give a shout out and thanks to our local fire department, our volunteer fire department here in Hancock, chief on through to the volunteers.

We had our fire awareness day at BarCal.

And so we had an opportunity to host members of the fire department came up with their gear and then we had a fire truck right outside the doors there.

And this is something we do annually.

And they give a talk to our students about fire prevention and fire safety, most importantly, and about the aspects of what our students

continue to learn about, you know, in helping support their own safety and awareness if they're ever confronted.

Hopefully, God forbid, never with that particular case, but in the event of a fire or, you know, the types of actions that are necessary.

And so, you know, they come in, the fire department comes in and gives a nice presentation.

We broke it up in a couple of different groups.

Of course, the attention span and other for our youngest students on to the older fifth graders.

You know, each presentation is kind of geared for that opportunity.

And so it's always this first week of October.

it is it's a national kind of day slash week for this awareness and safety program that we put on and so again just want to thank the members of our fire department for all those out there certainly it's an opportunity not just to you know give thanks to the members who volunteer their time and help keep our community safe from a fire prevention standpoint but any day that you know our members of a community volunteer or provide their volunteer efforts in support of the community I think we should recognize them and thank them for their service in particular and so if you

member of the fight department please give that shout out to them in support of the education of our students as well as just their time that they give in general in supporting community.

So very important topic there.

Then we also have you know it's been something we've been doing for a couple years as well.

Tomorrow in fact we have our youngest learners in Barquel, our kindergarteners.

They're going to be going out on a pumpkin patch farm tour and so it's a great opportunity to get exposure for our students to this the environment.

and getting that little presentation of how the pumpkins grow and the effects of that timeline they have and anticipation up to Halloween and certainly have an opportunity to have an enjoyable time on a field trip with the teachers and their classmates and as well some of the volunteers are helping support that.

And so these are just some of the things that we go on that many people may not remember or recognize or have heard about but it's just these things that we want to continue to help support and promote from that community engagement on both from

how we can support with regard to or as an example with our trails club and the outdoor furniture through our shop program on through to the engagement fire department, as well as taking our students out and getting that educational perspective on field trips.

So just a couple little tidbits that for this week anyway, that are important to recognize and notes.

So very thankful for the efforts of all of our teachers, administrators and support staff and helping support that.

So just that is kind of the academic

awareness pieces for this week.

Moving forward, because I'm kind of rambling like I normally do if I get on a tangent, right?

But that's okay.

So this week, most from an athletic standpoint, just a reminder to those members of the community who follow our athletics programs, volleyball team, again, competing exceptionally well.

We did have lots on the schedule for this week.

That was canceled, but we've added Berga.

So tomorrow evening, a reminder, if you see that in the calendar, you'll see the game canceled.

Just note that we did make that.

correction or not correction, but that update with regard to replacement of Lance with Berraga.

And so, outside of that, we do have our cross-country program.

We'll be competing at Houghton tomorrow.

Annie Elvento over in Houghton, again, Coach Smith in her program.

As a young program, still maturing, and our young student athletes, definitely competing every week and competing exceptionally well in anticipation of the UP championship here in a couple weeks.

And so, we'll have Coach Smith on coming up hopefully next week.

We'll talk a little bit about

season definitely about their prospects for another run coach Smith run no pun intended but there you know her programs have been has performed exceptionally well over the last several years having won multiple UP championships in the last seven and definitely again competing at a very high level with our students with regard to our whether it be in conference in the Westpac or just regionally at large and then this Friday night we have our next football host or hosting Bark River Harris and so this is

This is a contest actually that, you know, has not been a normal competitor for us as far as scheduler.

Bark River has been part of the Westpac for the last several years in what we refer to again as the small division of schools.

And so we're in that hybrid year right now of scheduling for the last several.

We've been in the big school division due to our cooperatives with Chassel, Jeffers, and Dollar Bay.

So our overall school number when it comes into account for all

all of our schools in combination.

The co-op puts us in the large division via number.

But over the last couple of years, from a participation level on through opportunity, our numbers are more aligned with the smaller school divisions.

So this year, we effectively became part of that small division, again, for awareness.

And then from a standpoint of a hybrid schedule, there typically is anywhere from two to three games crossover between the divisions.

This year for us, we've had several of the big schools are ready.

was an example.

Last week we played Kingsford here at home the week before Nagani.

Those are two members of the big division.

I'll be playing Houghton again for our annual Copper Bowl at the end of the season.

They're part of large division schools.

And then Bark River is actually part of the small division.

But yet over the last couple of years themselves, Bark River has been an exceptional team performing very well at making playoffs.

I think each of the last three years in a row now and making some deep runs in the playoffs.

And so this is going to be a tough.

game this weekend for Coach Leclerc and his staff and team.

But yet, from a standpoint of understanding the physicality of the game, having played Kingston and Ghani the last two weeks, certainly getting a full test or taste of that type of physicality and the overall 60 minutes of play, so to speak, from opening kickoff to end, certainly it's been beneficial to be, I think, in those environments for the team to have a good push here towards the end of the season.

It's certainly against a very valued

and exceptional opponent in Bark River this Friday.

So with that, the other thing I do want to announce about that game, like we had last week, and I don't think we got this push out yet, but we're going to be getting out today for sure and tomorrow.

Last week, we had for volleyball with our contest against Holt.

We had family and alumni night for those members of the team and our alumnus to come in and participate, getting admissions for free.

We're going to be doing that this Friday as well for football.

And so my apologies out there to all who

listening who maybe haven't heard but we'll get that that messaging out again kind of with different things going on here each week and then a little bit stretched thin now.

We haven't quite gotten some of the information on what we'd like but this Friday our kickoff at Connenfield against Barkover Harris will be family and alumni appreciation night so members the family members of the teams as well as our alumni will be able to enter the game for free and we were just it's supposed to be a very pleasant evening weather wise.

So we'll look forward to that here in October and certainly hopefully get a good crowd to help support the team and and see Coach Leclerc and his staff and the team perform at a high level this year.

So yeah, everybody's out there listening.

If you're an alumnus, which I know a lot of them aren't there, please come out and support the Bulldog football team because they've been playing extremely well and we're excited to see their continued growth and progress under Coach Leclerc.

It sounds like it'll be a fun

event.

It should be.

Yeah, absolutely.

Again, weather related, you know, the thing about having these nights

and helping identify opportunities to help bring in, you know, the next home date we have is comparable.

And so, you know, when we look at that, we always have our senior parent night.

So senior parent appreciation night, seniors are last contest on the home field or in general last contest altogether.

We help recognize moms and dads or family members who continue to support their young student athlete in our programs and certainly support our programs.

So between the senior parent night and the comparable activities that go on with

recognition of the king and queen and their courts and those other activities going on.

This became an opportunity for this Friday to reach out and say, hey, to the families and alumni, thanks for being who you are and your continuing support of the programs and the district, which is, again, being a bulldog, that bulldog tradition, that bulldog pride.

That's what we value most in a lot of ways.

And so certainly we want to honor that bulldog pride and that affiliation being a member of our community.

And it's always great to bring the parents in to anything.

do you can, school events, supporting events?

Absolutely.

You know, it is a goal.

You know, one thing that we always want to do is be in the framework of being engaging or being more, have more engagement opportunities.

Joel Karnick

And

so, you know, we're always looking for opportunities to do that or ways in which we can share more.

You know, I made reference to this in the past, but, you know, since, you know, we always kind of go back six years ago now or five years ago and talk about, you know, what happened.

And then a casualty of that time was the opportunity that

to bring people into whether it be our buildings or our athletic contests or other forms of ways in which we connect a person.

And so this is certainly a focus of ours, both from what we do in Barquel, from the K through five setting all the way through middle school, high school.

And so we want to be effective in doing that.

And we certainly want to share in everything our students are doing, their achievements, and the environments they have, much like we talked about last week or a couple of weeks ago with regard to their performance, whether it be in academics or...

or athletics or other and certainly the learning environments that they're exposed to and that they do extremely well on.

So yeah, we want to share as much as we can and certainly by extension, having this conversation with you every Wednesday is one of those opportunities.

So we're happy that we can continue to do that and share in the great things that are happening in our district.

And we're happy to have you and I'm sure Genos is happy to be sponsoring this segment.

Absolutely.

As always, I'll leave it there.

We're thanking you, Sam, the radio station for your efforts and certainly Genos are spot.

Alright, this has been the Bulldog Bite here on MIX93.

And welcome back to Vix93.

It's time for Hancock Happenings.

Todd Gast is here now.

How's Todd Gast?

Doing pretty good.

How you doing?

I'm doing

okay.

Good morning everybody.

It's a beautiful day.

Is it a beautiful day?

It is a beautiful day.

It's unbelievably warm for an October morning, so get out there and enjoy it.

If the skies are blue right now with sunshine, I'm not sure how long they're gonna stay blue, but I think we just had that weather report on and I think we were talking.

Chris

Solani said we're gonna have a nice weather forecast in the coming week.

It's gonna be warmer

good We like that we let's have a wonderful fall And we we don't really have it's one of our shorter seasons So I'd love to be able to see it without any of the s-word coming so let's

let's

No,

that's not conjure it up We've got a wonderful October we last time we were here was September.

So now it's October wonderful month ahead of us here in Hancock We want to thank first of all all of the vendors at the Hancock Thursday farmers market.

They had their last week of Vending and the market last week on Quincy Green So there is no more markets left for the growing season on Quincy Green

But we really want to thank Gina Kerr and her team of vendors.

We had over 30 rotating vendors that were on Quincy Green this year.

And it was all of you folks that came out and supported them.

We want to thank you as well.

But the planners and those that were involved in this, we want to thank them.

They brought an energy and a happiness to Quincy Green for the markets this year.

So we were super excited about that.

Not only could you shop,

that you could also socialize.

So that's what we really want to have with the market space.

And they've really succeeded.

And we really want to thank them again.

We cannot wait until next year.

Guess what?

Tomorrow's Thursday, right?

What does that mean?

It's game night here in downtown Hancock, where the fun is.

You can join the fun over at Casey Bonkers at 119 Quincy Street every Thursday for game night until 8 p.m.

And then we've got new Teeny Supper Club.

And that's at 321 Quincy Street.

And they host trivia night.

every Thursday and that's until 8 or they're at they are

That trivia night is at 830 not until begins at 830 and that's really quite a scene They've got a really big crowd there if you're into trivia That's a great place for you to be new TD supper club 321 Quincy Street, and that's every Thursday for trivia night Open skates are back at the Hoco arena and that's every Friday from 645 to 8 p.m.

And of course you want to look at our schedule We will let you know if there's a home hockey game for the Hancock Bulldogs.

So we let

you know if there's a cancellation or a move of that date but every Friday 645 to 8 p.m.

we've got open skates at the Hoco Arena and if you'd like to rent the ice sheet at the Hoco for a special event it's as easy as one two three just email arena at cityofhandcock.com that's arena at cityofhandcock.com and they will help you with your reservation.

We've got the October Arts here in Hancock there's a great exhibition

at the Copper Country Community Art Center.

It's a new one, remembering Gordon Borswald at the Copper Country Art Center.

And that's at the Cynthia Cote Exhibition Gallery.

And that's from October 8th.

So that's tomorrow through the 31st.

And the public is invited to the opening reception.

That is tomorrow, Thursday, October 8th from 6 until 7.30.

We hope that you get to go over there and check out his show.

This is a heat pass.

away a couple of years ago.

And this is a show honoring him.

His work is really awesome.

So we cannot wait to see that show.

And we also have at the Finlandia Art Gallery, we've got the, they are presenting the works by Joyce Koskinmaki, Keo Maiwa, Meggy Parr, Randy Wakeham and Kenyon Hansen.

They're featuring their works in painting, printmaking, fiber, drawing and clay.

So this show runs through November 20th.

I was able to get to the

opening reception last week.

It was awesome.

So get on over there.

That is the Finlandia Art Gallery at the Finnish American Heritage Center.

That show goes through November 20th because we were in that color season, right?

The color show is kind of now just happening right here in this area.

I know it's at peak in the Kiwena, but it's now just happening here in our area.

So we really want to let people know that the fall cleanup is underway.

the DPW will be picking up City of Hancock Residence leaf bags and that is in bio bags, they're green bags that you can buy at City Hall or at the High Rock hardware here in Hancock and they're $10 per roll or that's a dollar a bag so that's not so bad but the DPW will not pick up anything

else.

They have got to be in those green bio bags.

Also, you may bundle sticks, branches, twigs.

They need to be in four foot bundles.

They need to be neatly twined together for the DPW to pick them up.

So those are like the four foot length in branches twined together.

And that is the bio bags only the pickup and that was for city of Hancock residents as well.

That pickup will be through October 30th.

We also have the closures coming up.

So the shore signs that summer is over and we're in fall.

That means the Lakeview Cemetery is closing on October 15th as well as the Hancock Beach and Hancock Campground.

So everything closes on October 15th.

Please note that, even though the weather might be beautiful, that's gonna be okay, but that's the closure dates for those, for the Lake View Cemetery, Hancock Beach, and Campground.

I'll also make a difference days coming up, and this was our deer departed.

Dead Man's favorite event of the season.

She just loved this.

So we really truly honor her with continuing this on.

So we are looking for mentors to help Michigan Tech students clean up our parks.

So if you have some time, this is 9 a.m.

to 1 p.m.

on October 17th, we would appreciate it.

We would like to have our parks cleaned up, raked up, and then bio bagged so that we can get those leaves.

up.

The leaves are going to only clog our sewer systems as we get through winter into spring.

So the spring runoff will really have a hard time getting through those storm sewers.

So we really want to try to get our leaves picked up.

And so this is the great way to do that.

If you are looking for some help with with Michigan Tech students coming for Make a Difference Day, you may call Husky Helpers at 906-487-1963 and you can reserve students to come.

to your home if you're elderly or disabled and you cannot make that happen.

Give them a call.

Husky Helpers 906-487-1963.

And if you would like to be a mentor at one of our awesome parks here in the city of Hancock, give us a call at 906-482-2720.

That's at City Hall or

send us an email.

That's as easy as it can be, city at cityofhandcock.com.

And we would really appreciate your help.

That is make a different stay coming up Saturday, October 17th from 9 a.m.

till 1 p.m.

So we also got this, it's pumpkin season, right?

So get your pumpkins prepped, your wheels tuned, and your creative caps on, because it's the fourth annual Devman Memorial Pumpkin Races, and that's presented by our friends at Q&A Cape.

That's on Saturday, October 24th, from noon until 4 p.m.

You can bring the whole family out to cheer on the racers, enjoy the autumn festivities and support a great cause.

The Debman Memorial Scholarship and Cape as they continue Deb's legacy of giving back to our community.

So this is going to be a lot of fun.

I don't know if you've ever been to the pumpkin races.

Have you given that a try yet?

No.

All right, it's a fun thing.

They take the pumpkins, they put wheels on them, they decorate them, they put some funny faces on them.

They can get as creative as they want to with these things and they roll them down the hills on Quincy Green.

So it's going to be a lot of fun.

Last year they recreated it, they used to go down the street, now they go down on the grass.

It is super fun.

So get your creativity going.

Get your pumpkins prepped.

That is October 24th from noon until 4 p.m.

Hey, we've got the Wolf's Head Film Festivals coming up.

That's October 22nd through the 24th at venues throughout the city of Hancock, like the Orpheum Theater, the Hancock Community Hub, Small Craft, Quincy Mine, Newtini Supper Club, and Wolvenwood Bar.

So this spooky three-day independent and genre film festival cell

the weird, the wild, and wonderful world of

film.

So check that out October 22nd through the 24th.

That's the Wolf's Head Film Festival right here in downtown Hancock.

Also, we just want to let everyone know that the Hancock lights the night.

I know that we broke the news last week, but it doesn't hurt to break it again.

It is back for the 2026 holiday season.

So we're super happy to bring this to you.

We were able to raise the sponsorship monies.

However, if you would still like to help us out sponsor, there's several levels.

You can give us a call 906.

We're super excited again to bring this to you.

If you'd like to get involved, we are looking to get anybody who can help us with volunteers.

If you want to help with installation of lights, if you would like to help us in any way, please call us that.

I just gave that number, but 906-482-2720.

We will take your help.

And we are, like I said, excited to bring this.

Awesome event.

And guess what?

We have got all of our participants this year.

We've got 30 participants at the campground.

So we are full.

So thank you for everybody who has participated.

And we want to thank everyone who is sponsoring this event.

We cannot do these awesome events without you.

So thank you.

All right.

So this has been Hancock happenings.

You're at mix 93.
