WMPL News · Wed Sep 30, 2026

Welcome back to mix 93.

It's time for Hancock happenings not wasting any time Todd Gast.

What's happening in Hancock?

Hey, well, you know, we're full on to fall here in Hancock We it just seemed like the calendar turned For fall and boy now the colors are really turning on the trees

about the turn to October I

know tomorrow is October, right?

So we've got a lot of end of September things and beginning of October right into mid-October

do talk about.

So we only have one more Hancock Thursday Farmers' Markets left.

So tomorrow is the last day.

So that's on October 1st, right here in downtown Hancock from 2 until 6 p.m.

on Quincy Green.

So what a really great idea to start stocking up, thinking about your fall holidays and Christmas Thanksgiving, stocking up on those potatoes.

the squashes that you love, like acorn squash and spaghetti squash, nothing better than fresh picked right here from our local businesses, our local farmers and our local cottage industry folks.

So if you do believe in keeping our money and our economy strong, this is how you do it.

Sadly, it's our last one of the season right here on Quincy Green.

That is two until six p.m.

tomorrow afternoon.

So if you do want to get stocked up on all that, tomorrow's your last day on Quincy Green.

Once again, two until six p.m.

We want to thank all of the vendors who made all of our farmers market Thursdays.

A fantastic season.

So there was lively.

There was a lot going on and we truly thank all of the vendors for, uh, for being a part of, uh, making this a big success here in Hancock this year.

So thank you.

Um, Thursday is a big, big day here in the city of Hancock.

Uh, we've got game night, uh, in downtown Hancock and that's every Thursday.

So you can join the fun at Casey bonkers at one 19 Quincy street and they're open late on Thursdays and they're open in

until 8 p.m.

So what a great way to celebrate with your friends, your family, do some board games and get together and socialize.

Again, that's Casey Bonkers.

They're open until 8 p.m.

on Thursdays and New Teenies Supper Club host Trivia Night every Thursday.

They're at 321 Quincy Street and that is at 8.30 and that's quite a scene at New Teenies every Thursday.

If you want to get involved in it, it is so much fun.

So that's every Thursday.

It's trivia night at New Teeny Supper Club.

That's at 8.30 p.m.

Like we said, fall just happened last week.

Guess what?

Hoco arena is open and our free our open skates are back at the Hoco arena That's starting this Friday October 2nd and that will be in that will continue every Friday from 6 45 to 8 p.m Of course dates are subject to change if there's a home hockey game or something like that and we will let everybody know Or we will let everybody know on our calendar.

That's on our city of Hancock website And if you'd like to rent ice for this year

for a special event.

Let's just say it's an anniversary or a landmark birthday.

What a great idea to rent the Hoco Arena Ice Sheet.

So it's as easy as one, two, three.

Just email arena at cityofhancock.com and that's arena at cityofhancock.com and they will help you out with your reservation.

September Arts, of course.

last day of September is today.

So guess what?

You only have one more day today to go and check out Up Close and Personal at the Copper Country Community Art Center.

And that's Freeform Stitching by Peg McNinch at the Cynthia Cote Gallery.

And that is through today, September 30th.

If you've not seen this show, I highly suggest making the time today, swing on by and check that show out because it's simply beautiful.

You want to check that out and that is Up Close

personal with Freeform stitching by Peg McNinch and that's at the Cynthia Cote Gallery today is the last day and the Copper Country Community Art Center is also calling all artists to apply to the 50th annual

poor artist sale and the deadline is next week, October 6th.

So that's another landmark right there.

50 years of the poor artist sale at the Calumet High School.

So that'll be in December.

The show will be, but if you want to apply, if you're an artist that would love to do this and you've been a part of this, what a great idea to be a part of it for the 50th year.

the 50th year.

So that deadline is October 6th.

So make sure you do hit that deadline, artists.

We also have the Finlandia Art Gallery presenting a new show with Joyce Koskinmaki, K.O.

Maiwa.

I think it's M.I.W.A.

So I hope I'm pronouncing that correctly.

Maggie Parr, Randy Wacom, and Kenyon Hansen.

And that's featuring

works in painting, printmaking, fiber, drawing, and clay.

So the free opening reception is this Thursday.

So that is tomorrow, October 1st, from 7 to 8.30.

And that's open to the public.

So if you'd like to be in the first eyes to go and see this show, tomorrow's opening reception is exactly for you.

This show will run through November 20th.

And I can't wait to go and check that out.

These are really great artists.

We were talking about fall.

So guess what?

There's always cleanup.

comes to fall so the DPW will be picking up City of Hancock residents leaves.

that are packed in bio bags only and bundled branches that are four feet in length only.

So you can get those bio bags, they're green, and you can get them at City Hall or at High Rock Hardware.

They're only $10 per roll, so you get 10 bags per roll, a dollar a bag.

So that's the only way that the DPW will be picking up that organic

matter out of your yard.

So that's leaves must be packed in the green bio bags and your branches must be cut to four feet in length and bundled.

If they are left behind, that is the reason that they are left behind.

If you have questions, you may give us a call at 906-482-2720.

Also, fall brings on the closures that we have.

So Hancock Beach and Campground will be closed on October 15th as well as

Lakeview Cemetery, but before Lakeview Cemetery closes, we are asking that everybody who has flowers or decorations on loved ones grave sites to be cleaned up by tomorrow.

That is October 1st.

So please do make the effort to clean up those grave sites.

You only have until tomorrow, but the weather is pretty good.

So today and tomorrow you have to make sure you get those decorations off those grave sites so that the workers there can prep the cemetery for fall.

and winter.

The 32nd annual pancake breakfast for the Hancock Fire Department is this Saturday, October 3rd from 7 a.m.

until noon.

And that is at the Hancock Fire Department.

So we'd love to have everyone support our firefighters.

It is $10 per ticket for adults and kids under six years old eat for free.

So really let's support our firefighters, all of our volunteer firefighters.

This is a wonderful way to do that with this awesome fundraiser.

that they've been doing for 32 years.

So that's pretty awesome.

Congratulations, Hancock City Fire Department on making this happen for that long.

We've got the Hancock Historic Committee presenting them with the work of the Bob's and Adi's.

Bring the story of your ancestors to life.

And this presentation is next Tuesday, October 6th at 6.30 p.m.

at 399 Quincy Street,

or at City Hall.

That's where the Hancock History Hall is.

If you love ancestry and you have family roots here in the Copper Country, then this presentation is for you.

That is next Tuesday, October 6th at 6.30 p.m.

Bob Zanotti is the author of Beyond the Copper Horizon, and that's a story or a novel about his family history and them coming to the Copper Country back in the 1800s.

So he has a lot to share about ancestry and the Copper Country.

So if

If you do have those copper country roots and you love ancestry, then next week, October 6th.

at 6 30 p.m.

at Hancock City Hall.

Make a different state is October 17th.

That is our dear departed dead man's, that was her favorite event and activity that we did here in the city at Hancock.

That is October 17th, 9 a.m.

to 1 p.m.

This is also one of the biggest public service days for Michigan Tech students.

So if you would like to have some help, let's just say if you're elderly or disabled,

and you don't have the wherewithal to be able to clean up your yard, then call Husky Helpers at 906-487-1963 and they can send some students your way.

We got some great news.

The Hancock Lights of the Night is coming back for the 2026 holiday season.

So we've been able to raise the funds, but if you'd like to participate in this, we only have a couple more campsites left to adopt.

So call us at 906-487-1963.

2720 or email city at city of Hancock comm and we'll try to get you in as a participant in this year's Hancock lights the night and that's all we've got and we hope everybody has a great week

all right thank you for coming in

hey it's been a pleasure
