Tonight, the Michigan TAC Huskies take on the number one seed and host, Walsh Cavaliers.

My name is Josh Yolotolo.

This is the Kirkish Furniture Countdown to Tip-Off.

We are about 10 minutes or so away from our introductions, maybe close to 11 minutes away from our introductions, but in the words of the talking heads, well, how did I get here?

And the answer can...

and be put simply with two words, Marcus Tomaszek.

On a Sunday night, the Michigan Tech Huskies faced off with the Grand Valley State Lakers for the fourth time this season.

The Lakers had gotten the better of Michigan Tech each of the first three meetings.

And had the better of Michigan Tech for a bulk of the fourth meeting as well.

The Lakers held the lead for something around 85% of the game.

The Huskies' largest lead.

had been only two points.

They led to the entirety of the second half.

Oskis were actually trailing by two as the final possession came along.

And Steve, I don't know if you managed to clip that one back there for us, but if you did, we'll go ahead and hear how the final seconds of the Michigan Tech men's win over Grand Valley State sounded.

We'll try to see if we can grab that a little bit later on, perhaps, but it was a huge moment.

The Huskies, Tamashik driving in the beat, in from the left, and pulled up a mid-range jump shot.

One that he's pretty good at, for the most part, but it did not go.

We know surprise that it's Nate Abel, who wrestles away the rebound, chucks it back out to the left wing where Tamashik's gotten himself reset.

A little pump, and Marcus lets it go with the...

Sending Marcus in the free throw line.

He makes that free throw, giving the Huskies a two point lead.

The home run passed down to the other end with 2.7 seconds to go.

Goes to Jalen Charity who can't get a clean shot.

And the Huskies escape with a victory over the Grand Valley State Lakers 69-267.

Lakers held a two point lead at half 32-30.

Huskies then outscoring again 39-35 in the second half They were led by Marcus didn't shoot particularly efficiently from the floor 6 of 18 4 of 11 from free-point range But did continue with eight rebounds and five assists a steal as well and six of eight from the free throw line and Obviously the biggest points of the game and probably Marcus's career has every moment now

Jesse Napgezek did what he did again.

Made his way to the free throw line with the frequency.

10 of 14 from the line after having a good day at the free throw line against Lake Erie the day before.

Jesse also contributing six rebounds.

Five assists and a pair of blocks in the game.

Dawson Norgard was three of five from the floor with eight points.

Huskies got buckets from a few other players who made their way out there.

As a matter of fact, every other player who made their way onto the floor had at least one made shot from the floor.

Grant Warren had two.

Huskies shot 35.7% from the floor as a whole, but that was a marked improvement from where they had been as their shooting percentage was well into 20s after one half.

Rand Valley State shot better, 44.4%, 6 of 15 from outside.

They were led by Mason Docks with 15.

Most of his points go coming in the first half.

David Wilkerson, he did what he does against Michigan Tech.

24 minutes off the bench, 6 of 8 from the floor, 14 points.

And Trevor Smith Jr.

was in double figures with 11.

Now for the Walsh Cavaliers, how did they get here?

Well, they got the win over William Jewell in the quarterfinals, 77 to 70, and then flexed their muscle against Northern Michigan, 86 to 68, despite the better efforts.

Dylan Keele, who played 35 minutes, went 8 of 18 from the floor with 19 points.

Bennett Vassage, chipping in 15.

Paul Klesner, Cal Klesner, excuse me, with 10.

Wildcats shoot 40%.

They do grab 15 offensive rebounds on the day, but the Cavaliers got 11 of their own and were led by Caleb Shaper's 20 points on 4 of 7 from outside.

Mitchell, Kobe Mitchell, 15 points.

Matthew Medell, a dozen.

And the Walsh Cavaliers playing.

It looks like 11, I think, different players shooting 49% of the floor overall.

14 of 31, 3, and 12 of 16 from the free throw line.

On the season, the Cavaliers averaged 85.5 points per game.

So they were right on target with that.

That was good for third in the GMAC.

Their opponent scored just under 70 points per game.

Again, right on target.

Also third in the GMAT.

Scoring margin first in their conference.

Rebound for game 39 right on the mark there.

First in their conference.

Free throws 70.8%.

Three-pointers, 36%.

And three-pointers made 8.5%.

Welcome back to the Saccini Center and Alumni Arena, the campus of Walsh University, North Canton, Ohio.

Huskies have been here all weekend and they now get to face the number one seed host Walsh Cavaliers for the Midwest Region Championship, coming up in just a few short minutes here on MIX 93.

Some of the other things that have gone on in Division II basketball, the number one seeds have advanced in many of the regions including Cal State East Bay.

Baptist Damon also moving on as a number one seed Gannon and Nova southeastern Lenore Ryan who the Huskies faced earlier this year advanced to their region championship in the face Lander and Minnesota Duluth continues their Cinderella run as a number eight seed they will take on Oklahoma Baptist tonight for their turn at a shot at the elite eight

Also in Division 2 basketball, it was announced officially earlier today that Northern Michigan head coach Matt Mackrezak is accepted to head coach position at Northern Illinois University.

So Mackrezak will be leaving the GLIAC after seven successful seasons with the Wildcats and he will now ironically be a Husky.

That was announced earlier today by Northern Illinois University.

He'll be moving to the Horizon League next year.

I don't know that they're quite as committed to it in terms of creating as much chaos, but they run two lines of five.

They sub five at a time and they pick up full court.

It's going to be a battle.

I mean, we've been picked up full court for the last 80 minutes, and it's going to be that again tonight.

They got some really good players.

They crashed really hard.

It's going to be a heck of a challenge.

Nothing's been easy, and now you've got a home team and a big-time atmosphere.

Offensive rebounds, three-point shooting.

I think this team is better than anyone that we've faced so far.

Would you kind of agree with

that assessment?

Yeah, they're right there with them.

They're one of the highest offensive rebounding percentages in the country.

I mean, they got 15 on Northern.

There's a team that really values rebounding the basketball.

I mean, that's going to be a huge, huge number for us tonight if we hold our ones on the glass.

They're hot from three right now.

On the year, they're pretty good at getting the paint, too.

So I think some of it has been teams have been trying to protect the paint.

They've stepped up and made the threes.

We're going to try to guard the three point line tonight.

We're going to try to

rebound.

I see that they don't necessarily have the most size, at least in comparison to some other teams.

How do they compensate

for that?

They're long.

They're athletic.

And they're deep.

I mean, when you constantly come in there and you're playing three minutes at a time and going as hard as you can, it's easy to keep crashing

when you know you're not going to

play that long.

I mean that second five comes in and they might not be as potent scoring, but the pressure gets cranked up and they crash really, really hard.

So I mean that's just relentless this, I guess would be the answer

to the question.

So for the Huskies tonight in order to do something that's never been done at this school before, wouldn't that regional championship one need to happen?

You need to rebound, you need to take them off the three-point line.

Obviously you got to play good.

I mean you got to make some shots to win a big time real game.

We got to get inside.

It's a big game for Dawson.

I think he can have his way in there.

If we do a good job of getting it in there, he can stay out of all trouble and work to finish.

He took over as the head coach officially in 2004 following the passing of former head coach Steve Lloyd.

He passed away with due to complications from liver cancer, but it served for more than 11 years as an assistant and been associated with the program since 1986 when he began his career as a player.
