and Minnesota State Mavericks.

These two teams split in their four game regular season series.

The Huskies losing both games down here before the New Year, after the New Year, beating Minnesota State up at the John McGinnis student ice rate up for two games.

So what will happen tonight?

Well, nobody seems to know.

Talk about a coin flip game when it comes to who will advance to the

Championship game in the Mason Cup tournament next weekend, next Friday.

And now we know it's down to three teams.

St.

Thomas in a very tightly played game against Augustana just beat the Vikings by a score of two to one.

That game just ended a short time ago.

So St.

Thomas still in it.

They will be one of the two teams playing in the championship game for the Mason Cup next Friday.

And where it will be, well,

If the Mavericks win here tonight, that game will be here.

If the Huskies win here tonight, that game will be in the Twin Cities at St.

Thomas.

So the Huskies need a big win here tonight, coming off a couple of big wins against Bowling Green State University.

If you were at those games last Friday and Saturday, you know how nail-biting they were.

The Huskies were good much of the weekend.

Bowling Green was really good a lot of the weekend, but the Huskies found a way to get two big wins on home ice and now advanced to the semifinal here against Minnesota State.

These two teams have played a lot of semifinal games.

This is the first one where it's a single game.

The other ones have been in best of three series.

We'll talk more about that as we go through the Kirkers Furniture Countdown to face off.

And they are playing some good hockey right now.

Lots of weather going on out there, as everybody knows.

And Joel, before we get to the weather, I guess congratulations going on to Josh Bittner of the Michigan Tech men's basketball team.

We had a chance to watch and listen to that game.

This afternoon, it was fun watching the hockey players really kind of get into it and root on their fellow Huskies.

Yeah, it was, Dirk.

You love the camaraderie that you see between our teams and our student athletes, and they really do get behind each other and cheer everybody on.

And at the end of the day, we're all Huskies.

Yeah, it's

fun watching and listening to Billy McCulloch ask questions about why this is done and that is done in basketball.

It just, it's very endearing how these teams support each other and Josh Bittner played a really good game.

I thought he really

coached a good game out there today.

Yeah, the changes he made and executed at halftime was, you know, their pressure was, their pressure gave us fits in the first half and it was really great to see Josh and his staff come up with a game plan and then, you know, and really rely on that senior laden team to execute.

Marcus Dimashik always seems to be the guy to go to when

and things maybe aren't going so well.

And once again, he stepped up, didn't

he?

Yeah, it was great to see his first one go in.

It kind of, you know, that little bit of a sigh of relief, like, OK, Marcus is Marcus today.

He's going to go.

Just some people know Joel has been on the trip, and I think since you stepped out of the SDC a couple of days ago, Joel, you've pretty much been on the phone or on the computer doing something as far as figuring out what's and who's going where with all of the weather.

What is going on as far as the SDC and closings and what you know about now?

Yeah, so going into tomorrow, and then they made the announcement.

Earlier this afternoon so the SDC is is closed and gates is closed for tomorrow But then going in the Monday campus is is gonna be fully closed so you know really kind of a Rare snow event that they're planning for and taking all the precautions to To make sure that everybody's safe and and those that need to be out there doing their jobs clearing it for the rest of us can do their jobs

So everybody out there they're asking of course to stay home as much as

possible.

The hockey team will be heading out here after this game.

This is a one game semifinal.

So the road home is going to be a little bit iffy.

And I guess kind of taking it as it comes, right?

Yeah, it's going to be a lot of dialogue with the driver, you know, weather conditions, road conditions, see how the driver feels, you know, just kind of relying on what we're going to see real time.

I mean, we do have contingency plans in place if we need to use them.

But really,

for us to get on the road and get back in town safely.

Joe, the home season for team sports for Michigan Tech has pretty much completed.

It's been a fun ride in the 25, 26 season, hasn't it?

Oh, it always is.

We have such good culture.

Our staff really comes together.

And it takes a lot of pride, as Dr. Sandragurt does, that we put on a good show.

A lot of the Michigan Tech fans that were planning on coming down here to Mankato won't be able to come down here due to the weather.

It's just too many question marks with this big blizzard that they are about to get or are starting to get here.

Huskies taken on the Mavericks earlier this week.

We had a chance to talk to Tyler Miller, the defenseman of the week in the CCHA.

He had three assists in one of the games last weekend against Bowling Green State University.

He talked about that series and talked about

his performance.

Yeah, they definitely challenged us to our full potential there.

It was a great, great two games from us, though.

What was the

mood on the bench in that second game, knowing that

they were really trying to take it to us to tie it up and we didn't want to come to

game three.

It's just one less mistake than they will make and I guess just capitalizing on our chances.

It was definitely a dog fight.

It's hard to end someone's season and so I was proud that we did that.

Do you think that is going to make us, the word we kept using was battle tested?

I mean you can't

find much more of a difficult opponent than what we had to face this past week.

Yeah definitely any any team really in our conference gives us a challenge every single night so I guess we just gotta come out or give it give it our all every single night and hopefully come on top.

You looked at the score sheet there you got three apples in the one game you're known as kind of a guy that can really rush the puck up

and

you're around the puck a lot but you know to get three in one game that's pretty awesome.

Yeah it was definitely pretty cool for me but

I guess just like showing up every day in practice, getting better.

I guess I felt really good.

My body felt good this weekend.

Wasn't really battling any injuries or anything.

So that also helped.

And yeah, it just feels good.

17 blocks for the Huskies in that second game, I think it was.

And that is huge, right?

Because then you know you're sacrificing for your team.

Yeah, blocking shots is definitely a big thing, especially when you're in that one goal game.

One shot could change the whole entire game.

So blocking a shot is definitely a pretty big thing to do there.

I know we're talking early in the week here, but what is your thought process getting ready for Minnesota State there where we lost two games earlier this season?

I think just listening to our plans, stick to our structure, our coaches will have a plan in place and hopefully we can put it forward to the game.

And it's time to talk to Owen Baker, one of the players of the Michigan Tech Huskies, who had a great weekend last weekend against Bowling Green.

Well, Owen, what a great weekend.

I know it's been a little bit of a tough year for you trying to get into this lineup that's been tough to crack for a lot of the guys.

What were your feelings after that big two game sweep, first of all, as a team?

Yeah, first off, thank you.

And obviously, playoff starts.

We want to win in advance, and it was awesome.

and just to be able to get in the lineup and help make an impact to the team felt really awesome.

How have you dealt with this knowing that if you

keep working hard something's going to happen and you're going to get another shot?

Yeah, I think just it's been a long year and you know we have a lot of guys who every day are working in practice just want to be able to help the team and get in the lineup but just sticking with it and believing in what the coaching staff says and was able to get an opportunity and try to make the most of it.

Okay, so I wanted to ask you about three different plays.

There were more

place in this, but three different plays.

The first one that didn't go in, you're backhanded to Steven right here, down in front of us here.

We're sitting in the Michigan Tech bench right now.

A good kill by Michigan Tech.

There's Baker with a

pass, and

Sardarian was in!

And Sardarian put it right back into Palmer

who made a great save.

What a play by Owen Baker to hustle to create that opportunity through the cross to Sardarian all the time in the world.

Buddy, Michael, backhand.

How did you know he was

there, all that stuff?

Yeah, so the BG player kind of threw it out of the zone and caught a break, saw a loose puck, went for it.

And he was able to just somehow see Steve coming off the bench and just spun around and threw it to him.

And he went in and nine times at a 10, he scored in that.

But it was a good play, for sure.

OK, so then the second one we want to

talk about was the big goal.

I think it was the first one on Saturday night, where you were just shot out of a cannon.

Was that right off of the bench?

What happened there?

And what did you see?

Good steal here by Baker.

Baker comes down three on one.

Yeah, I completely came off the bench.

It was my first shift of the game and kind of caught a fortunate pass from the BG defenseman.

We had an on-man rush and passed over to Cheech and he made an unbelievable play to Stibb and got the boys going and it was pretty electric.

But explain to people what happened to you

after you gave up because I didn't even notice it live and I went back and looked at the replay and I'm like, oh my goodness.

Yeah, I was crashing that pretty hard.

As the puck went in, I kind of broke my stick over the bench, erming the post, and yeah, I just couldn't control myself.

I was probably a little too excited, but it was good that I ended up in the back of the net, or else I would have been without a stick.

Well, as you were going down behind the net without your stick, were you fully aware that the puck went in, or did the crowd

really kind of tip it off?

Just going hard back post, just in case Cheech kind of threw it back.

But I think probably broke my stick just before Steve ended up putting it in.

But nonetheless, it was funny and it was awesome.

Well, it was funny too, because I watched the replay.

I'm like, did he really break a stick?

And then when I saw you going to the celebration, I noticed you were the only one without a stick out there.

It was pretty crazy.

All right, one more.

The empty net goal, which helped us seal.

We didn't realize how close it was going to be after that.

But tell us what happened on that play.

Baker picks it up.

Yeah, just to be on that situation was awesome to begin with, but just locking it down, trying to prevent a goal late in the game and saw Steve put it off the glass into space, so I skated down ice, tried to put it in.

Puck was rolling a little bit and their defenseman was pretty desperate, so I ended up

just put it off the side of the net.

But thankfully, Sid got the puck and threw it across a fashiano and it ultimately helped seal the game.

Did you think in your mind that had that puck settled

down, even though you were at an incredibly difficult angle, that you would probably would have been able to put that in?

I would like to think for sure, but.

I think that's definitely one of the strong suits of my game.

You know, I'm trying to use my speed whenever I can, especially when I see an opportunity to maybe blow the zone or get a puck in space.

But just continue to always move my feet when I can, whether that's for

check, back check anywhere on the ice.

Is that something that you had early on in your career as a young

kid

and how

do you develop that as you keep getting older?

Yeah, I think for the most part I've always been a relatively fast guy and you know we work on stuff all the time throughout the years that helps me keep that stuff tuned up but for the most part yeah I just always had that speed and just figuring out when's the right time to open it up.

And I think the guys are ready to go.

What are your assessment of the practices this week coming down here?

Yeah, we've had a good week of practice.

We're healthy, ready to go.

I'm excited about the opportunity.

Obviously, it's a huge challenge.

Games like this, our best players got to be our best players.

No doubt about it.

We played well against them, probably three out of the four games.

Would you put it that way?

Yeah, for sure.

So, you know, what's in the past is irrelevant.

It's all about execution tonight, playing to our identity and playing together, playing discipline, playing with energy, and then just going out there and playing the way we have all year.

I know you talk always about

showing up on timing and starting to play the right way right off of the

original face off does that do you have to lean on some of the leaders on that to not only you guys talking to the team but when you're out of the locker room those guys get those guys ready

well for sure we know now you know what it takes and you know these games are such a fine line such a margin comes down to every place so you have to start on time you got to be ready to play and you have to manage your emotions in a contest like this you can't get too high you can't get too low you got to calm who will collect it but you need to play with that energy and

desperation and that's what it takes this time.

You talked

about how you know we're pretty healthy.

There's a couple guys that I know can't go here tonight but everybody else is available.

Was it difficult picking the lineup here tonight coach or because of what happened last weekend was it easier?

Well we're always looking to try and put the best lineup on but we're gonna go with the same lineup as last weekend.

I liked our group up and down and around and you know just excited.

Obviously it's a big challenge.

We've got to get traffic in front of Tracy.

We've got to

We got to find a way to generate.

We got to break the puck out.

We got to forecheck, be disciplined, special teams are key.

So all those things are going to come into play, but go out, have fun, enjoy it.

We know what's at stake.

It's ride or die.

And how important will our board's play be tonight against a

team like Minnesota State?

Well, it's so critical.

We talk about getting lines, but while play and getting pucks off the yellow and executing that, puck management at the lines are just so critical at this time.

And it fuels our four check.

And it fuels, when you get into another team's zone, you start to create offensive zone momentum.

to good things usually happen, usually penalties, scoring chances, wear teams down.

So it'll be a real forcing.

Are some of our marquee

players, Steven Sardarian, Jack Anderson, guys that will be targeted out there probably, do you worry about that at all?

Or is that an asset for us as far as freeing up some others?

Well, I mean, your best players got to play and they got to carry the mail and they have for us.

And you know, obviously Minnesota State, they got Tracy Annette, Evamir on the back end, Ben Acasi and Mara.

up front some other players too they've had nice seasons so you know it's it's just going to be a game where your next man up next shift up just keep going and you know anybody can be a hero so you know it just takes one more play one less mistake it's gonna be a lot of fun coach good luck tonight we'll talk to you after the game my pleasure thanks to
