High School Football: Shell Lake at Hurley

Good morning and welcome to In Our Range.

This is part two of my conversation with Larry Peterson, where we discuss the Papst Mine disaster of September 24th, 1926, and the events coming up to commemorate that disaster right here in Ironwood.

We'll pick up where we left off.

It's a family.

Yeah.

Get to the wife, get to the wife, get to the kids,

you

know what I mean?

through everything.

You

know, because you got people that just want to mob them.

You're absolutely beside themselves.

And once they got pulled out of the ground, they were all sent over to Grandview, you know, and given some food.

And there's a lovely story in there that we've talked about before where one of the miners, I can't remember his name, but his kids came to visit him and he gave them his ice cream and his fruit.

You don't get this very

often.

You don't get it very often.

I want

you to have this,

you know.

So I gave him fruit and they gave him the ice cream, you

know.

It's

sort of, there is an unwoven in there.

It is woven, but you gotta be willing to read it.

There is a cast system, okay.

Look at what was going on on the Google Epic range besides mining and its accidents, okay.

Luther All Right High School.

You know, it's almost a million bucks for that thing.

Then you got the memorial building.

You got the Masonic Temple.

And plus we're getting to be the biggest city in the U.B.

And people were making money.

If you were a mining captain or a shift boss or something like that, you could make a nice living.

And even

if you weren't making that much money, like you mentioned, you had this million dollar school there, so you knew your kids.

would likely be doing better than you.

So even if you were down in that mind until the day you died, your dream of coming to America and having your children have better opportunities in the life for you.

If it can't be

you, it can be an extension of yourself.

And that means your children.

And you got somebody's people to come over here even up until the day they were retired and then later on died or whatever, they didn't have a pot, okay?

but they managed to get their kid to med school, you know?

That is what was the heart and soul.

I want a

better life, but I want a better life for my kids more than I want them for myself.

And that's why I do what I do.

And we

need that.

We still need that ethic.

We don't have that.

Wouldn't that disappear?

Part of it disappeared when the hardship started to disappear.

You know, all of a sudden everybody's got an eight hour

eat our shit, eat our day, technology changing, unions actually have something to say, you know, everything is changing and then when not all that flux and all that sort of that historical evolution is going on, all this minutiae that is just as important gets lost.

Yeah, Larry is you're very passionate about all this.

So I'm sure you're excited about these events that are coming up.

There'll be tours of G&H Shaft on Saturday, September 26th.

You'll be doing a roundtable discussion on Thursday, which is the actual day of the cave in when these men were trapped.

You'll be joined by Bruce Cox and Ivan Helen and you'll be able to go into much more detail there than we can

hear.

Ivan Helen and Bruce Cox have put into just this accident alone.

is mind-boggling.

And we were talking about being nationally noticed.

If you go down to Miner's Memorial Heritage Park, I mean, you're actually in the park, deer, vegetation, et cetera, et cetera.

A lot of history there, okay?

And there is Ivan's History Trail.

And he's got copies of old newspapers from Amid.

Well, the boonies in California and everything else that are reflecting on that accident that has happened here We had national attention.

We should still be getting national attention because it was one of a kind Yeah, and it's lost anyway.

Yeah, I'm really looking forward to that roundtable discussion I think you and Ivan have done incredible work with the miners park and to be able to

You know, to be able to hear you mix it up with Ivan and Bruce Cox with all this stuff, I'm sure it's going to be an incredibly illuminating and wonderful event.

Very quickly, but I just got a hold of Mr. Cox's book 5 on Oliver's Ironman.

And you know, some of these guys that have been working there for like 40 years, 50 years, and they got their little metal or whatever.

You know, and you look at their later lives, you know, like I outlined some of what was in there.

How many died of cancers?

How many died of silicosis and things like that?

You know, there was a legacy there of fatalities on a slow death.

Yeah, that was one thing that I noticed when it came to the aftermath in the book, Perfectly Safe, when Bruce Cox describes

what happens to the miners afterwards you know it did seem like so many of them died from lung issues or stomach cancer or and died youngish you know it's reminiscent of what we just went through with the 25th of September 11th 25th anniversary of September 11th where

You know, yes, we lost 3,000 on that day, but we've lost thousands of more because of the air quality and first responders getting cancer because of all the stuff they are breathing in down there.

And so the fatalities don't stop at just those three men.

So the round table a hundred years later the pap's mine disaster will be going from 6 to 7 p.m.. It's scheduled currently to be at the ironwood Carnegie library But that might get moved to the memorial building and then on the 26th.

There'll be tours

of G Shaft and H Shaft, which is something that I know is near and dear to your heart, is taking people around the Miners Park where all this history happened.

And so I'm sure you're glad to be seeing that happening.

They'll be meeting at the Bonnie Road Trailhead at 1 p.m.

It'll be going till 3.

And then this incredible program will begin on Saturday the 26th.

It goes from 6.30 to 8.30.

There'll be a memorial service with a hymn, tributes and benediction.

Bill Jamerson will be doing songs and stories.

Ivan will be

giving a historical presentation.

And then there was a radio play written some years back by Ray Marine, who did a radio play of The Disaster.

There'll be a video of that that's shown and a documentary film feature.

This sounds like a really wonderful event.

It's totally appropriate and wonderful that this will be happening at the Memorial Building.

So what a great, great use for that

space.

during the disaster and after the disaster where we collectively grieve.

We also collectively celebrated with the recovery of the 43.

So it's very poignant in using the memorial building for this hundredth anniversary observation.

Yeah.

Yeah.

Even though it was dedicated to the men who served in World War One, you know full well.

that the people here mining, they were serving in World War I too.

They providing all that iron to make all that steel to help the United States come out victorious on that end.

So I'm looking forward to that and then

You know, we're going to talk about something that you and I have mentioned maybe about two or three times on the radio before, which is the creation of some kind of permanent memorial or monument in the miners park at G Shaft.

And likely we should be thinking about this at each of the shafts that run through that park.

And you have a wonderful story about a monument that was built up there, up there right on the edge of Jesseville there in 1918, 1919.

The name of the kid.

There's a 19 year old kid His name was Edward Ryan.

His father's name was Ed too.

The kid was killed in a tragic accident.

I believe it was a cave in on

November 8th, 1918, and he was interned in the Riverside Cemetery on November 11th, the first armistice day in 1918.

He, you know, and I've always, over the years, been advocating.

We need a monument.

We need something permanent.

It makes it an arms, you know, preserves the magnitude of the sacrifice that was made.

You got the highest rate of mining fatalities outside of like the Pennsylvania coalfields.

That is truly noteworthy instead of collective amnesia.

you know and I've always had sort of a chip on my shoulder that why can't we get on with this and have some sort of a real monument to these you know these all these people but at the same time takes fully into account who they were and the nuances and biographical whatever okay and then all of a sudden it comes back to me that up on top of Newport Hill there is a monument to a mining fatality

fatality was killed in the Newport Mine.

And so, hey, we are ahead of the curve in 1918.

Now, I know basically it was there.

I mean, it's a beautiful slab of marble and his parents probably financed most of it.

But at the same time, you can see just by the way it's erected and how it's preserved.

I mean, it's

just as much as rap your pump bellies right next to him you know where he had found iron ore 1871 here's this kid that was killed in uh 1918 at the very end of the war and how much ore did he mine you know was he in there at 17 or 18 you know and I suppose you know he's young he's strong he has a chance

And maybe his parents are saying, no, I don't want you to go off the war, not until you're absolutely totally independent, until then you work on the mine.

Yeah.

So we have an example of this permanent monument to a single minor, a young man passed away up then the Newport Mine, and it's up there on the hill across from the old medical

facility,

the old clinic.

Where we used to

have our long X-rays

and

our chest X-rays.

Anyway, yeah, the clinic up there across the street, there is these two large boulders and there's a plaque out there, duly, and it's important, Raphael Pompelli's discovery of ore.

oxides on those stones, these yellow stains.

And then there's all the old story, you know, about all the things that Raphael did and how rich he got and everything else.

Let's not go there.

Newport does name Dapper.

Newport, you know, all out on the East Coast.

Rhode Island.

Yeah,

Raphael had a house over there.

He was doing okay, huh?

Yeah.

But anyway, let's not go any further with that.

But over where that is, look.

A short distance away and there's the monument to Edward Ryan.

So perhaps as we go through these events in the coming week, commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Pap's Mine disaster, we can begin a conversation to create a monument or a memorial inside the miners' park.

that commemorates the overall sacrifice.

We talk about our mining heritage, and you mentioned it earlier, that we have a lot to celebrate with our mining heritage here, but we also often, we need to recognize the sacrifices that were made on the range as well.

You know, tragedies accumulate.

Those tragedies all accumulated as part of the experience of what was built here in the Western UP and in Northern Wisconsin.

A permanent memorial sounds very appropriate, so we would welcome any discussion to get that going.

You know, it's what it comes down to too sometimes.

If you have security or somebody's providing for you, it's rather easy to ignore, you know, the restrictions, the limitations of what you can and you can't do.

I was raised with that.

A lot of people that I know were raised with that.

And it was, that house better be damn white, and that trim better be green.

And this is where you put your garbage, and we're gonna put the storm window up for you, whether you like it or not.

And if you live in Montreal, you got an amusement center, we pitched in for your church, hey, we got a store, you could spend your own script there.

You know, it's just, those are the things we need to be aware of.

There's a lot woven in there that just sort of gets blended out.

It's all just plain

Yeah, so I hope as we commemorate this centennial that we can move this conversation forward and make something happen in that regard Larry I'm really looking forward to this roundtable discussion and these events happening at the memorial building on 26th Yeah, is there anything you want to wrap up with this morning before we head on out?

Yeah, I just uh

Falls coming up and all the colors and stuff like that.

Go to the top of Newport Hill.

Look at these monuments, but also enjoy the color because it is beautiful up there.

So I'm just saying, you can experience the same thing in Miners Memorial Park.

Visit the damn history trail.

You'll learn a lot about the PAPS Mine disaster and all the inaccuracies that are printed by somebody out in South Dakota.

Okay, so I just...

There is a lot there.

It'll tell you just how fascinating this accident really is or was, whatever.

OK, but please with the weather, still nice, all this color and everything else, plus all these all this history that's coming up.

This is the time to really enjoy the park.

Yeah, we really do live in a beautiful place in that park is is an incredible part of our community.

Well, I am very grateful for local artists and historian Larry Peterson to come in and talk to us about the centennial of the Papst Mine Disaster, and I'm glad for Civic Media and WJMS here to give me two days to try to share this story.

You know, we could talk on and on and on, so thankfully there are a bunch of events coming up next week, highlighting and commemorating the centennial of the Papst Mine Disaster at G-Shap.

On Thursday, September 24th at 6 p.m., the event a hundred years later, the Papst Mine

disaster roundtable discussion will feature Larry, local author Bruce Cox, and historian and preservationist Ivan Helen.

This event is scheduled to be held at the Ironwood Carnegie Library.

Due to increasing interest, the event may be moved to the memorial building to accommodate a larger audience.

Then on Saturday, September 26,

There will be tours of the Papst G and H shafts from 1 until 3pm.

Participants are meeting at the Bonnie Road Trailhead of the Minors Memorial Park.

Also on September 26th at 6.30pm at the Ironwood Memorial Building, there will be an event entitled Echoes from the Eighth Level.

There will be a memorial service with hymns, tributes, and benediction.

Local History presenter Bill Jamerson will perform songs and tell stories.

Ivan Helen will give a historical presentation.

There will be a video of a radio play by history curator Ray Maureen.

There will also be a documentary film feature by TV6 Marquette.

It would be wonderful to see a lot of people turn out to commemorate this incredible event that made national news 100 years ago.

Well I was thinking on the way down there.

Boy it's already in week five

and

like this is my first pop broadcast

As far as a color analyst, I'm like, where's the time gone?

We're already a week five, but no, I've been listening from near and from afar.

And you guys have done a great job as always.

And I'm super looking forward to this good match up here tonight.

Yeah, this should be interesting.

Well, you know, we let Joe have the first Hurley game.

We gave you the first game off, and then

Hurley went on the road.

Right, right, right.

We didn't think they'd have a game last week, and they ended up with one down and serving.

And this one tonight is

It's been rescheduled because of a forfeit and we'll touch on that later.

But like I said, we got a great match up here tonight.

I think these are

two good teams.

Shell Lake comes in undefeated with a 4-0 record.

Hurley comes in with a 3-1 record, losing to Sering last week, 44-12, and Shell Lake defeated Flambeau 40-6.

And you look at that Sering game,

That's that games a little deceiving because Hurley went into the week last week thinking at that point they had two weeks off They took it easy in practice on Monday and Tuesday and I think I read where they went with no pads Just going to go through and all of a sudden Wednesday afternoon.

I know hey, we got a game Friday night Time to get trying to put the switch back on again.

Yeah, good point Rod Football is absolutely

preparation is key.

Obviously executing the game plan and playing and making plays on Friday night is

what counts but the football, the coaches are in their keep with the amount of preparation and how they prepare and scout and knowing their opponent and that was huge.

Not knowing what the opponent has.

You just look at the schedule and you see who they played

and maybe they're not as strong opponents as you thought they were that they were playing and you got the four-hour drive and only really had a couple days to prepare there was a recipe for a 44 to 12 beating at Surin with that drive and all the other factors but I'll give them but the Mulligan on that game right now tonight we're going to find out what this North Star team is all about

as this is a playoff match-up type ball club they're playing tonight.

We'll

see how they respond tonight.

Yes, and taking nothing away from... Taking nothing away from Surin.

Right, that's what I meant.

They had the same thing, right?

They didn't know about Hurley, but they had the advantage of being home.

But now we've had a week to prepare for Surin and I'm sure that we're prepared for this one.

And they got some good-sized kids out there.

We were talking to one of their assistant coaches.

They got a good program.

They're not playoff eligible because of what?

Their enrollment?

Three-year average of 200 or more enrollment makes you ineligible.

Talking to the coaches beforehand, they had kids move into the district, 12 or so he said with families, and that pushed them over the 200 mark.

But this will be the last year.

So he said, we're treating this as a level four playoff game tonight because this is our playoff.

They are not eligible until next year to be in the playoffs.

So nice to know that because both teams already got to win.

It's four and one right now, no matter what

happens here tonight

because of the four fits and we'll touch on that later.

But yeah, actually for playoffs, they're four and one.

Yeah, right.

Four and all.

Four and all.

It's a playing

game, really.

Yeah.

Yeah.

I tried to explain it on the radio the other day and just to go over that again.

So when the record on the field right now is 3-1 with the loss.

When it comes time for playoff seating and playoff consideration, the state will look back at last week and say what works best for Hurley.

The loss?

No.

The forfeit win?

Yes, we give them the forfeit win.

Surveillance going to get the win on their end?

Hurley's going to get the forfeit win.

Right.

Same thing tonight.

And that put Hurley as, according to Bown, Travis Wilson on Bown.

Hurley is the number one ranked team currently right

now

for playoff factor in

eight-minute football.

Number one seed, yes.

And this

game will not hurt them seeding-wise.

If they win,

it'll

really help them in losing.

It still helps them because they're going to get the forfeit win.

Right.

Which?

I don't even know who they were supposed to play tonight.

Elko, Elko, Elko White Lake, Prentiss.

And long as we're on that subject, Rod, let's touch on that a little bit for our listeners.

What's going on with 8 Man Football right now?

I

know Shell Lake has some games coming up that have been canceled.

You look on their schedule.

They've got some games that they got to fill spots with.

Hurley just went through that.

We did the Florence Ironwood game first week of the season.

We found out last week Florence

shut down their program.

I don't know if they shut it down or if they went to JV.

I know when they played anywhere, they came with 14 kids on the roster.

They ended that game at the end of the third quarter.

It was 36 to nothing and they started the fourth quarter with a running clock and the forums quote said, listen, I'm down to eight guys.

I have a full season to play.

Let's stop it right here.

And did they end up dropping?

They dropped it last.

They did not play last week.

Yeah, see, and that's the

problem.

My take on it Rod listeners is You got to have a minimum amount of kids to start the season like 15 if you don't have 15 kids starting your program Your chances are you're not going to make it through the season So I realize that these communities care about their Johnny's and they don't care about our Joe's But our Joe's got enough and they need their games if those Johnny's would say hey, we're not gonna have enough and

We're not going to have football season this year.

We're going to play a JV schedule.

You guys go ahead and start scheduling more games in June, okay, in July.

You know that.

You can put these games together where

they

matter.

But they care about their Johnny's and they say, well, maybe we'll have a team.

Maybe we won't.

You get into the season.

It's football.

Kids, they're ineligible.

They get hurt, whatever.

They don't have enough.

And Hurley ends up with three forfeits.

Shell Lake has two forfeits.

There isn't a schedule.

It's just chaos.

So something has to be done to make sure that these schools can kind of guarantee that they might make it through a season by putting the minimum amount of players you need to start with.

And you get

the forfeit win, but you go back three weeks ago, four weeks ago, Hurley defeated, they went on the road, they defeated a very good Leona Wabina team.

Wabino went down to Phillips and won that game.

They were

They were on the verge of having two weeks off.

Yeah.

And they only have an eight game schedule.

So they would have played only six games, two weeks off.

They still wouldn't be playing here tonight if they didn't find an opponent.

That's not good.

That's not good for momentum.

No, that's not good.

Then it's not fair to the schools that are traditionally strong in football like Hurley and Shell Lake.

You know, to be at the mercy of the small schools, the co-ops.

And I realize it, I'm not picking on the small schools and they got to have their football and they want their kids to enjoy all the extra career that I get it.

But co-op, find five schools to co-op with them to make sure you got enough.

Like hockey, you look at hockey, there's five schools instead of co-op to form a team.

Well, if there's travel and stuff involved, so be it.

You know, melon, Mercer and Butternut.

And it's

aren't playing the role so learn and washburn in their truth

and

try to get one team And you can guarantee the two kids that really want to play will be able to play right?

Yeah, so it's just it's hard and I understand that but I'm sentimental to the schools that have worked hard to build a tradition and Have games and the state says these are your teams you're playing and then the teams don't they can't play well It's on the state to fix that then.

Yeah

Yeah, it's fortunate for these two teams that there was enough schools that have went down to the JV programs that opened up some of these games.

And that's not

easy to do because you've got to line up the same weeks and then I'm off, you're off, we play here, we're going to go to your place, you come to ours.

You've got to find refs.

And you've got to find refs.

So credit the AADs and the schools for getting together here and making it happen so both schools have a game.

And we were fortunate to get a game last week and this week with quality opponents.

Yes, yes.

good point so yeah so anyway i'm looking forward to tonight uh we touched on that hurley's the number one seed going into eight man going into week five and they're in a win-win situation here with this game like you said if they win

great

that's going to be a lot of points for them for the playoff factor if they don't

they already got the win on a fourth

they'll be

five and oh yeah after this week

Take a look at what these teams have done so far.

Hurley started the season with a 36-0 victory over Tri-County.

They went to Obina-Leona, defeated them 20-14, went to Phillips, beat Phillips 22-6 and lost last week to Surin 44-12.

Shell Lake defeated Luck 52-22.

They beat Washburn 60-6.

They beat Bruce 54-6 and they beat Flambeau 40-6.

The assistant coach was up there.

He said,

A lot of their better players, their core players, have only played seven quarters of football so far this year because of these high scores.

Yeah.

You know, these kids are

at it all year.

They lift weights for this.

And, you know, it's just a shame.

But they're going to get their money's worth tonight by playing this Hurley squad.

Yeah, it's coming off a tough loss.

So I'm expecting a great game.

There's a nice crowd filling in.

beautiful night for a ball game as we get ready for the national anthem.

Yeah, we're going to send it back to the station.

We talked about traditionally strong programs.

That's a traditionally strong program like Lyndon.

It's amazing that a small community like that, the way they've been able to sustain such a high level of play.

But Rod, speaking of that, I know what often I can match up.

How's that shaking out?

I haven't released.

I was playing some good

football.

They had some tough games.

They had Norway last week.

Norway was ranked in the top.
