Let's go out to the play-by-play with Rod Helverson on WJMS.

Good afternoon football fans from Longyear Field in Ironwood.

It's Michigan football, eight man football starts this week in Michigan and we have the Florence Bobcats in town to take on the Ironwood Red Devils.

I'm Rod Helverson alongside Joe Remkes as Michigan gets going tonight.

Joe, yeah, it's gonna be exciting.

It's been a long time since I've been on the Michigan side of sports and that

I'll tell you what, it's exciting to be here, right?

It feels good considering the lack of rain throughout the summer, a couple of brown spots, but not... It looks good in a sense, but the grass isn't very long, is it?

Well, when I went down to the concession stand, I walked across some of the ground, it's really crunchy out there.

Yeah, it's not going to be a soft field.

No, but hopefully, you know, I think it's going to hold up well.

It looks like they did some nice work.

It looks sharp from up here.

It certainly does.

It looks sharp.

It just doesn't look like a very...

soft playing surface but that won't affect us will it not at all not at all not at all Florence coached by Ken Schmidt they started their season last week against three lakes slash spelps a combination team there and they lost 28 to 12 so they come in with an 0-1 record ironwood as I mentioned kicking off the season tonight and Florence

This was the game that Ironwood was supposed to play hurly.

I've said this a few times on the radio over the last couple weeks.

This was supposed to be the hurly Ironwood game.

They redid the hurly conference.

They added a couple teams, such as Leona Wabino, Three Lakes Phelps, and Elko White Lake.

And that forced Hurly to drop out of the Ironwood game as they have a component.

Luckily,

probably would, not for why it happened, but Gillett I believe dropped down to a JV program and I think that was who Florence was supposed to play tonight.

So they went to JV, opened up a spot for Gillett and luckily Ironman was able to grab Florence, so I believe this has to be Florence's first trip over to this side of the peninsula to play football.

I just, I don't recall them being over here before.

Yeah, definitely, you know, they have a

I was looking at their warm-ups up there, and they've got a pretty big quarterback.

He's a senior this year, and he's 6'5", and 238".

He can probably steal over the whole line of scrimmage.

I don't think he's going to have a problem.

He's a big kid,

He stands out above the rest of the team for the most part.

I think that one other guy is a 6'2", 6'3", guy, Carter Reed.

Yeah, there's a 6'4", Chris.

When they walked up to the high school, you could tell without even looking, you could tell which one was the quarterback.

Yeah, he's a good sized kid and with his weight, we do have the weights on them.

Sometimes you don't get weights on the visiting teams, but he is 238 pounds, so.

Yeah, talk to Kevin Lane.

I said, well, what do you know about Florence?

He said the key, he filled the key, especially on defense.

is to watch the long pass.

Yeah and that's going to be one of the things I think they're going to go to a lot Lawrence is on the passing game because you got a quarterback that size and that you know being a senior he knows the offense he's played for four years now so he's ready to air out the ball tonight so yeah we got to stay at our stay at home and we also can contain him on the run too because he picks that ball and he's a big kid.

Yeah you have to hit him low to bring him down and it looks like

If both of these wide receivers are the starters, one guy is 6'3 and the other guy is 6'4.

So they got some height on their offensive sides.

And I don't know how Ironwood is going to match up size-wise with these guys, but we're going to find out.

Yeah, it's going to be interesting to see.

I'm just looking at Ironwood's lineup.

They got a young team this year, Rod.

Looking at the grades, there's one senior.

and five juniors eight sophomores and 11 freshmen so you know we'll see what happens this year I mean but of course they're building it's kind of like once in a while you do have to rebuild a little bit but it's nice to see that many kids though yeah they have 25 kids all four only has 14 kids included up here tonight yeah they have three seniors six juniors four sophomores and one freshmen so

Yeah, there is, and I don't know if part of those guys that are suited up tonight are part of the JV program.

They may be, and there's no JV game right now, so they can suit up and suit the fight to be in the locker room for varsity, and hear all that stuff, get activated with it.

Yeah, get ready for some Thursday night lights.

Yes.

One junior that will not make it to the game tonight on to the field will be Reed Johnson for whatever reason we heard it was just that he will not suit up tonight.

He was one of their taller kids too at 6'4".

Yes.

But yeah it should be interesting to see you know we're about seven minutes before kickoff and this should be a pretty good game.

I'm looking forward to it.

I remember being back in this booth rod many years ago.

It's a little

bit of a homecoming for you.

Well, this is my, I don't know what it is, the school I graduated in 1982.

You know, seems like decades ago.

It was decades ago.

I used to do it with Gary Aho.

Yeah, we did many football games here.

We did quite a bit of broadcasting.

So the whole concept of it isn't new, but it's kind of neat seeing

You know everything looks pretty much pretty much the same I'm ready.

I'm ready for some football runs.

All right Florence is in the Marinette O'Conto 8 8-man football conference and that Includes Gillett which went to a JB program, but I'll say them anyway Polina St.

Thomas Aquinas St.

Thomas Aquinas is from

Marinette, that's our combination team there, Alina and St.

Thomas Aquinas.

Niagara, Pembein Goodman, another combined school.

Wasaki and Surin, that's the MO 8.

And the Great Lakes 8th West, that I know is a member, boy, that conference expanded again.

This has to be what I think one of the toughest conferences in the state.

Go give it.

Crystal Falls Forest Park.

Ironwood.

Ish Pemming is new this year.

Lake Lindenhubble.

Municine is new this year.

Norway is new.

Antonogen and North Central.

That is a very sound crown.

But you got to bring your A-game every game.

There is no weaknesses.

Crystal Falls ones, state titles and football.

North Central has been tough.

Norway was in the semifinals last year.

So I mean this is just a tough school.

Obviously people have graduated from those programs, but still it's just that name that goes with it.

This is a tough conference.

For the top and the bottom it's going to be a very strong conference.

It's going to be an interesting season to see how these young guys where Ironwood come out and start the game tonight.

It'll be interesting to see.

I'm looking forward to seeing what kind of game plan they put together.

You know, seeing some of the young guys perform because like I said, it's one senior and five juniors and the rest are all freshmen and sophomores.

You know, I was watching them warm up and a lot of those kids that I was kind of keeping an eye on were the younger kids.

And they were doing nice patterns, catching the ball, catching it soft in their hands.

They were doing a nice job.

So we'll see.

I saw the, I was here last Friday for the scrimmage, saw a little bit of it.

It's so hard to judge on the atmosphere because you don't know what the coaches are trying to do so you don't really know what the plays are and stuff like that.

Look at the difference between the Ironwood sideline and the Florian sideline.

I know.

Almost places many players on the Ironwood sideline.

Are we getting ready for the national tournament?

Not quite yet.

Alright, so I can touch on other games going on in the with area teams.

Apparently is that Leona Webino.

Phelps is over in Three Lakes, taking on the Three Lakes Phelps Football Club.

In Wisconsin games in Michigan, fish farming is at Lake Linden Hubbell and Norway is at Municine.

Just so you know, this is the number one fight song in high school football.

I do like, I mean, I do like their fight song.

I forgot to sing it tonight.

I was going to sing it.
